Just rewatched the game. Will type up all my thoughts in a separate post, but I continue to maintain Thorson isn't the problem. At all. I counted 2-3 poor throws and a couple bad decisions. Otherwise, I don't think he was bad at all.
Thorson is not the problem.

Tough sell when you're playing teams that most people expect you to beat.

It's funny how every apologist is coming on here now to tout WMU as a MAC powerhouse and to remind us that ISU will make the FCS playoffs.

Didn't everybody pretty much predict Ws in those prediction threads?

NU is not going to sell out Ryan playing FCS opponents. It's well-documented that we have fewer alums in the Chicago area than almost all other B1G schools, and non-alums generally aren't going to show up for NU-Illinois State even if NU is having a good year.

How in the world could you say this?

We look TERRIBLE and our Offense is bad. It's so unimaginative, buddies and I can watch the game together and call the plays with 80ish% accuracy. That's really bad.

Just watch other teams around CFB and you can't help but notice how bad our offensive preparation and playing calling is. It's been a historical trend for YEARS. That falls on the individual responsible for the offense. McCall has got to go.

This is a potentially bad argument but I'll make it anyway. I'm a Colorado guy and a Broncos fan. As you know, Trevor Siemian was named as the starter. I watched the Broncos v. Panthers this week and was STUNNED. Trevor didn't even look like the same quarterback. His decision making, throws, and overall command of the offense were very good. He looked like he belonged in the NFL and belonged as the starter. Granted it's one game and I'll caveat that Denver has better receivers and offensive line. However, the development of Siemian is stark. If you read articles talking about Siemian quoting people from the entire Broncos organization, they ALL say they believe he is the real deal. He was never bad in college but he certainly wasn't great either, he was okay. He often made some forced errors, made overthrows consistently on long balls and never looked like a true NFL guy.

It shows you what happens when a talented individual gets great play calling and very strong coaching and tutelage. Players in ALL areas of the offense do not even come close to reaching their potential under McCall.

I'd never expect us to get a Peyton Manning/John Elway type guy to provide perspective to our QBs but we can do better than McCall.

We deserve better and we should demand better.

How about some effing accountability? Doesn't matter if we think McCall might have something left in him. Cut him loose. To demonstrate that we actually care and that accountability matters. People get fired from their jobs for underperformance all the time. Often, it's not as reflective of the competence as it is the environment, factors out of one's control, and being at the wrong place at the wrong time. But, you don't just keep letting failure after failure repeat itself and don't do anything about it. Anyone who has ever been a part of a high performance organization, or one that has any sense of responsibility to it's shareowners knows this.

I know some companies who fire you automatically if you miss your number in one quarter. How many years of this BS do we have to endure?

McCall has become the Greg Colby of offense. This is how bad our offense is right now.

I wouldn't hate that idea but wouldn't it be awkward for Barney? Does he really want to travel all fall long and coach teenagers / early 20s men again?

Also don't we have to think about a long term, permanent solution?

As with most assistants, I would assume his NIU contract is year to year so no such release would be required after the season. In season, a release would be required.

Well then, our new OC ( I'm assuming there will a new OC ) should have at least one good OL coaching candidate to consider. Reason for optimism at a dark time. Go ' Cats!

I'm certainly glad we fans have that settled--that we will have a new OC. Now, who else will be replaced in our housecleaning?

Gee maybe he would help the football team get an W.

Willy, I actually quite like your grumpiness and for the most part make a point to read your posts with an open mind even if I might disagree with you. This one, with all due respect, I can't:

I know we're all at a pretty low ebb right now, but are you so desperate for a win at a game played between young men aged between 18-24 for our amusement that you'd advocate hiring a guy who, while in charge of a similar group of men, AT BEST looked the other way while those men that he was responsible started sexually assaulting women across campus and AT WORST actively tried to cover up those felonies so that the suspects could play football on Saturdays?

Yes, the same guy who is doing a mea-culpa tour on ESPN et al without an awful lot of mea-culpa-ing?

I'm as furious as anyone about yesterday. I want change and if that means jobs, so be it. But I'm not so desperate for change that I want to see that guy on our campus.

I hope you were being facetious Willy, I really do.

I was. Some interesting names are just now popping up among the board folks. Maybe just maybe some of the deep pocketed donors will put pressure on Phillips and Fitz and positive changes will come.

I have no confidence that this head coach would pick the right people to replace the existing offensive staff and I half expect all of the staff to be back again because what incentive does Pat have to make changes?

Phew. Deep down I knew, but in 2016 you never can tell.

I hope you are right. What happened yesterday can NEVER be allowed to happen again.

He's got about 2.2 million incentives a year. Contracts end and can be bought out if things get bad enough.

I'd call this bad enough.

That would not happen.... unless, well, are you ready to root for our boys to go 0-12 or 2-10 just so he can be fired? That seems to be the opposite of being an NU fan.

Well no, I was answering your question: You asked what incentives he had to change things. He has a significant financial incentive and it's a fact of life in coaching that ultimately everyone pays with their job. The only variable is how long it takes for it to happen. In this case, it would be glacially slow.

But seeing as you pointedly questioned my fandom, I'm very much hoping the first two weeks are a rather unnecessary and extreme version of rope-a-dope to get the rest of the conference not to take us seriously and that next Saturday night we uncork an updated version of our offense that puts 600 yards and 70 points on Duke, a blowout win which spurs us onto a 10-2 season and a berth in the championship game.

Color me skeptical, but that's my hope.

Agree to disagree. If you were McCall, what imaginative calls would you make with an OL that can't block at all? If you can't run the ball and can't pass protect, what kind of offense do you run?
.

You run the option with Alviti.

If this is all just one giant rope-a-Conference, I will print out out this thread on my computer and eat it in the NU football building lobby.

I do love your outlook, though.

I hope we kill Duke. Their alums have gotten to be almost (almost!) as bad as Harvard, scUM and Notre Shame alums in terms of shoehorning their alma mater into conversations for no reason other than to brag about where they went to school...

"Hey, I really like your hydrangeas. They're lovely"

"Thank you. I took a liking to hydrangeas as an undergrad at Duke, and I've planted them ever since."

WTF?!?

I suggested as much in an earlier thread but I wonder if we would do a long term disservice to the program by sidelining a young QB who is getting better (Thorson).

We also haven't seen the current status of Alviti's ball skills or who is going to run those read options with him if JJ is out. Due to injury or by necessity, Alviti has not exactly received a ton of reps to practice the option in game situations.
