The couple of people on here that seem to down play him because of competition must be some relatives trying to keep high expectations off of him because from what we see and read he is a can't miss for anyone. Being a Kentucky kid I would have liked seeing our coaches on him more than any other outside coach.
Just not a good thing, the state produces very few players on this level and when one does come along the priority should be there instead of acting like it is someone they can grab anytime. Why shouldn't a Kentucky kid that is good enough to play at Kentucky not get the royal treatment and then some? Born and raised here, why shouldn't that account for something?

After a bit of a slow start with his team trailing by 18, Reed Sheppard picked it up and North Laurel won a pair of games.
Sheppard, who picked up a U of L offer this week, finished with 23 points in the win over Lyon County and then had to have had 40-plus in a 70-64 win over Shelby County. He was all over the floor against the Rockets.
At one point, Sheppard had blocked shots on three straight possessions.
It's easy to see that Sheppard gets a lot of his publicity and accolades from scoring the basketball because he's a fantastic shooter. But in these two games we were so impressed with his floor game, his hustle and his willingness to get his teammates involved.

What more does Cal need to see?
Cal will offer Reed or the harm to the fanbase will be irreparable. Even if Cal offers him and Reed goes elsewhere, it will create a divide. I'd suggest Cal make sure this happens.
I’m telling y’all. Been saying it for months now. The trajectory this kid is on, he’s much more that just good enough to play here. He just might be a top 15-20 kid by the time it’s said and done.
These posters on RR and HOB that keep downplaying this kid are in for a rude awakening. A kid with all the genetics he has, combined with speed, agility and skill, has a great shot at being a great player. If Cal ***** this up, be will regret it IMO.
Absolutely correct. You’ll still have these Cal nut huggers making excuses for him, though. For many fans, they think Cal hung the moon. It’s incomprehensible.
Pretty amazing that anyone would come on here and wonder if he is good enough for us. Another thing that bugs some people about Cal, not making the state of Kentucky the starting ground on the recruiting trail. Choosing the glamorous side of the 5 stars to show how well he recruits and the glamorous side of getting those 5 stars in the pro's as fast as possible. In our eyes the in state kid that is plenty good enough to play here should be the top priority along with winning championships.
Nothing wrong with getting 5 stars if they help us win championships and are willing to work and produce better than the 3 or 4 star on the team. But recruiting all these high rated players, having them visit and acting like this kid is lower than them and they can grab him anytime is not the way to go about recruiting in Kentucky. Virginia and UL all over him, having him visit and at his games while we focus on the glamorous ones only. As a proud Kentuckian it is bothersome and something I guess Cal even doesn't understand or care about. And some fans get irked at the least little criticism he gets.
I don't want him out. I want him to prioritize what is best for this program and this state, and that includes the young people growing up in this state. Point to all the 5 stars and all the guys in the pro's you want. But when championships are far between in influx of this type of talent that he brings in and young players are treated as second hand in this state then all things are not right. We need experience and we pride to get over that hump. He seems to be moving on the experience part, now don't second guess the significance of that state pride that some of these young guys here could provide.
I'll take all the 5-stars we can get but you gotta have some seasoned multi-year productive players. It's not an accident we won it all with Anthony Davis, but not sure that would have happened without senior Darus Miller.
Was talking to my wife while reading your post and I said, “hell yes, lay the wood to him and them!” By him, I mean Cal. By them, I mean fans that downplay in state kids. Your posts are 100% spot on. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Yep but even more than that, AD wasn't a typical 5*. He was totally dominate, in every way. The only other 5* we've gotten who was even close is John Wall and he was a poor outside shooter.
MKG and Randle were pretty dominant. Both were the most D1 ready freshmen I’ve seen in years, outside of Zion.
Call me color blind, but I think every KY Mr. Basketball should get an offer. The offer goes with the title and the two are inseparable, Now it's up to them to accept the offer, knowing they may play limited time. Maybe they get plenty? Just my 2 cents...
Yep, to a point, but no one was like AD. He could have controlled the game on both ends if he wanted. He just didn't need to offensively. Even Zion won't reach AD's level. He didn't in college and he won't in the NBA.
I don't totally disagree but if there was a run of 4 years with low level winners, that would create a roster problem. That said, most of them are able to contribute at this level by their jr or sr year.
If he’s good enough and fits, he’ll get an offer. If not, no big deal. Antigua seems to know which players to go after.
We have seen before during the Pitino years what a Kentucky kid can bring to the program. We can't live on Kentucky kids only but when there is one that can help this program and wants to be here Cal should make sure they are front and center while recruiting these five stars. Then one step further, if they are better than a five star they should be out there playing. Don't like any kid mistreated, but especially a Kentucky kid that just wants what he deserves and nothing less.
This guy will go to UVA and light up the ACC and probably will end up like Kyle Guy.
If the kid is consistently better than five-stars, which he will have the opportunity this year to prove on the AAU circuit, I'd expect to see Cal hot on him. He had a good game against some high ranked players. They also had a good game against him. Give the kid a chance to show a body of work against better competition. If he has IT he won't need any of us to champion him. He's got two more years of high school. 6'3" is big for a shooting guard at that age. Will he grow more? Will the rest of the kids his age catch up? Will he continue to dominate? Will he dominate against competition that doesn't look like the clips that have been posted?
I'm going to enjoy watching him play. I'm sure Cal is paying attention too. TBH I'd rather have a coach who doesn't offer right away because local fans think he should. Cal has made poor decisions in the past on players. If a staff with Antigua, Chin, and Lucas are holding off on offering, then I can live with that.
He gets offers from UVA and Michigan, I think it puts some major pressure on Cal to start seriously looking at this kid. Cal loses this kid to a prominent program and BBN is going to be hard to live with. He is more than just an in-state kid, he is a double legacy. He is the son of one of the most beloved players in UK history. The son of a two time national champ. The son of a former tourney MOP. Cal has to understand this is a VERY important recruit for the fanbase.
Not to mention, Shep bled Blue even as a youngster. Even though me was from Georgia, he was a huge Kentucky fan growing up. He wasn’t like many kids we get today, just looking for that fast track to the NBA or because they like the current coach.
Cal obviously doesn't see this or he would have been the coach on him heavy FIRST. He acts like he understands Kentuckians but he obviously doesn't understand the kind of pride we have for the state. Either ignorance or simply does not care about it. Either way, he is wrong. Your statement is very well worded.
The thing about Reed is he is 2+ years from walking on a college campus and playing!!! He is as good or better than sevreal of the out of state kids Cal has signed right now! Unless there is a true rift, that is not being told, between he and the Sheppard's it is beyond ridiculous that they aren't all over him and he's not committed.

Of course Matt jones has to bring race into the recruitment On the show today. Yeah, there might be a fan or 2 that think Reed being white is important but the vast majority do not care. They want him because he is a KY kid and because both his parents played at UK. AND because he is pretty good.
Better than Askew that started for us last year.
