RAMBLINGS OF AN IDIOT, ASSESSMENT BASED OFF OF A NOTHING SCRIMMAGE

- N'Diaye is much better than I expected. He’s the starting four day one most likely.

- Alex Wilkins is a certified bucket. Has the makings of an Antonio Reeves by year three.

- Zoom Diallo is hard to watch. Great at penetrating but can’t shoot from deep and the ball sticks. If he doesn’t adapt to the natural flow of the offense quickly, people will be asking for Wilkins to be PG1 before long.

- Moreno is much improved, has a much more defined body, looks more comfortable as a trigger and looks to have a little more bounce than last year. However, even with improved conditioning, he still leaves some to be desired there. He still looks like a probable 4 year college player to me.

- Frank Kepnang is truly a paint beast. If that dude gets healthy, look out world.

- Milan is going to be a serious, serious problem for teams to deal with this season. He missed routine shots that we already know he won’t be missing much, but his ability to make shots under heavy duress at odd angles is something magical. Dude is going to get hot and go straight up 2K at times this year and it’s gonna be fun.

- Mason Williams definitely looks like a freshman.

fun watch. before the pro day i didnt think too much of the team. figured it would be in and out of the top 25 most of the year. then before i watched i read KSR's write up and got super optimistic. then i watched it and now i'm back to thinking its a team that will be ranked/unranked all year.

some first impressions:
  • ndiaye stood out in terms of his shot making, movement, and offensive versatiliy
  • we took a ton of 3s, didnt seem to make a good or high percentage of them. seems the same as last year where we let them fly early in the season. guess we will see if it plays out
  • b hawthorne was the #2 guy that impressed me most. made a 3, was able to move the defense, found ways into the lane, draw contact. but needs to finish better
  • disappointed in diallo/wilkins. i know wilkins made a couple of 3s but missed others and didnt do anything else....need more out of a two guard. dont see what others see. diallo....non factor really
  • milan does what he does
  • moreno looked mostly the same skill wise, maybe more mobile
  • we probably went 50% on FTs
  • frank seems kind of useless....i'd play potter over him based off today
  • mason and mcbride are ok
  • zero physicality....maybe this was intentional because of the setting
  • not sure we have anyone that can get into the lane

N’Diayes offense was a nice surprise. He needs to give a little effort on the defensive end. If he’s serviceable defensively, he’s going to be considerably better than I thought.

Diallo is frustrating as hell to watch on offense already. He’s strong and should defend well. Need him to have a Lamont Butler type of game.

Mason Williams isn’t ready yet, but you can see something is there. Needs time.

Wilkins and Mom can score, no doubt. A lineup that includes those two and N’Diaye with Moreno defending the rim makes me nervous.

Honestly after watching the scrimmage, the team reminds me a little of Cals last team. Offense all over the court, but man, can they figure out how to get stops when needed.

Just watched it, they scrimmaged for 22 minutes.

Unbelievable they call it a pro day. Did scouts even show? We have maybe 3 pros on this squad and that's probably generous. Even those 3 would be at best second unit.

Im glad we don't have Cal but until we get actual high level pro prospects no need to embarrass ourselves by calling this a pro day.

You couldn't be more wrong about Mason Williams and I think you are off about Moreno as well

Wouldn’t be my first time being wrong. Says at the beginning of the post that I based this off a nothing scrimmage. Mason Williams could be Jalen Brunson as far as I know, but he looks very much like a freshman off the ball defensively.

As for Moreno, I’m not sure what part you disagree with. I said he looks much improved but didn’t show enough to make me think he’s NBA bound. It’s October — plenty of time for that to change. But as of now, I’d be surprised if he isn’t a four year college player, which is fine. Im not one of these people who think only the lottery picks are valuable. I thought Oscar Tshiebwe, Antonio Reeves and Tyler Ulis were very valuable regardless of being non-lottery guys.

i agree with you.

mason did some nice things. but did a lot of freshman things too. driving into the lane with nowhere to go. dribbling too much. cross the lane pass that got picked off. silly fouls. all typical freshman moments. which i think is your point.

with moreno....he is paid like a top 3 or 4 big man in the country. got stripped down low, turn over at the top of the key, missed half his FTs, not one scoring post move, his one strong move got blocked by ndiaye, no blocks

like you said, just a scrimmage. but i wasnt "wow-ed".
