i pledged a fraternity in 1994. I was hazed daily, as were all of my pledge brothers. As well, it was perfectly acceptable for me and my friends to travel all over campus in the evenings with open alcohol containers, while campus police watched and stood by. Also, there was a house party nightly in multiple fraternity houses, with as much alcohol as you could hope for, with no issues. I’m not convinced that UKs policy on hazing and alcohol on campus was all that tough before maybe 10 years ago. Surely not since the 80’s.
Honest question. Are underclassmen so desperate for friendship that they’ll let upperclassmen frat brothers force them to do do stupid stuff just to join the silly club. I seem to remember being able to get alcohol and have a really good time without having someone try to humiliate me.

Irritated that they of all organizations, with such a reputation and so many championships, had such a lack of leadership and oversight of these kids, and also irritated that at least one news organization who reported on the issue included wrongfully a picture of UK's dance team members and not the cheerleaders...how stupid is that? I let them know about it too, sending an email to Ryan Gaydos for sloppy, incorrect reporting. He owes those girls an apology.

I live in Somerset near Lake Cumberland. Now, I don't know what happened on the UK cheerleaders "boating trip" to Cumberland but, I can tell you there are several coves on the lake where it's basically Spring Break every single weekend during the summer. Not just partiers from across KY but, OH, IN, IL, MI and beyond. It's crazy.

I have no idea what went on as unfortunately I wasn't there to witness it but I can say there has been a lot of support on twitter from current and past members as well as other folks around UK. They say the story being spread is not accurate and it was a mad parent who started it and blew it out of proportion. It seems her daughter had issues on other cheer squads she was on growing up and the mom was always at the center of it.

Having 2 daughters who have done cheer and dance teams I can say that those moms can be divas for sure. Some of them are still trying to live out their childhood through their kids and seem like miserable people. My guess is the truth lies somewhere in the middle of nothing happened and a drunken, nude, hazing party happened.

The cheer camp wasn't a school sponsored event, the boating trip to the Cumberlands was. The cheer camp was hosted by a cheerleader organization.

They told the students they couldn't have alcohol. These are grown *** adults who make their own choices. The student athletes should be held responsible for their actions if the coaches are being punished for it.

The mild hazing amounted to learning a lewd cheer from the 70's and performing it individually. Ohh, the humantiy of it all!!!!
17/18 year old freshman cheerleaders are not grown *** adults.
It was a UK sponsored "Team Retreat" at Lake Cumberland attended by the athletes AND coaching staff. UK was footing the bill for this which makes them liable. Many of the cheerleaders were under 21 and were drinking alcohol. Some drank so much that they required hospitalization.
If the students had initiated this retreat with no sponsorship by UK or attended by UK coaches it would be a non story.....but the minute UK's name was attached to this retreat and the minute it was attended by the coaches it immediately become a huge liability and PR disaster.
What if an underage drunk cheerleader had drowned?
What if a drunk/half dressed cheerleader had been sexually assaulted?
UK would have been sued out it's azz and then some.
It was a complete lack of proper oversight by the coaches and a logical choice by the UK admins. to fire these coaches. To think otherwise is a sign of being absolutely clueless about liability issues in the real world.

Hence, the reason I have written something seems "off" about this story. Unfortunately, some (not all) cheerleading parents can be vicious. Never made sense that a parent would contact a faculty member about the alleged issues. I hope the entire story will eventually be revealed. Just hope this will not damage the cheerleading program in the future. If these allegations are true, hope all misconduct by coaches, advisors, team members, and maybe parents, is corrected for the betterment of team members, program, and school.

Lol, not really how the law works.

Were any of these kids underage? If so, it hasn't been reported. At 18, these are adults, whether you agree or not. The coaching staff told them alcohol wasn't allowed and told them again not to consume it when alumni had it on boats. The students admitted to sneaking it in and hiding it from coaches in Gatorade bottle. That alone shows an understanding and disregard of the rules by the athletes. At 18, you have a reasonable responsibility for yourself.

Students are sexually asssulted on campus constantly, hiw would this be any different? Why are we creating hypotheticals that have no bearing on this instance?

People drown in lakes all the time. How would UK be responsible? They were informed no alcohol was allowed, they were told not to consume any, they admitted to sneaking it in and hiding it, knowing it was not allowed. If I sneak alcohol into a dorm and die of alcohol poisoning, is it the schools fault? They could maybe sue the alumni for providing alcohol to minors if the victims were underage, but that would be the extent. Again, why are we creating hypotheticals?

Were these adults forced to drink alcohol against their will?

Your mentality is exactly why the world is going to ****. It's always someone else's fault, lets not hold those responsible who actually made the poor decisions and broke the rules.

This. I don't get how some here don't get this distinction.

The issue is not that these kids were getting drunk and naked, we all know partying college kids do that sort of thing. Instead the issue is that they did it at an event sponsored and paid for by UK, under the supervision of UK coaches, and with the knowledge and tacit permission of said coaches.

If these kids do this on their own time, then this is not a story. That's no problem. But it's a distinctly different situation at a UK event like this. As you noted, if something really bad had happened as a consequence of UK coaches knowing about and allowing underage drinking, hazing and public nudity, then UK has exposed itself to potentially serious legal liability issues. That's not something UK can just blindly ignore.

I'm still shocked, irritated, and disappointed in this decision by the admin. You want to suspend someone for a first time offense, not fire them based on allegations. Maybe give them a reprimand considering the time and great work put in on behalf of the University that doesn't even include them as athletes... ?

This is much more of a black mark on the admin and the university as a whole, that they fired someone the first time an allegation was made, didn't allow or request any character references or accounts from people that were there over how many years, and didn't address this with people involved up front. Frkn shady sht

The coach at this point might be looking at a civil suit at least, since the university has claimed he condoned the behaviors listed without listening to any considerable evidence or testimony to the contrary. This is a really BIG assault on his character, reputation, and professionalism without any consideration for his contributions to the university and its reputation

As I thought, there is a story behind the story, allegedly. Seeing comments from current and former cheerleaders and allegedly involving a $28 million lawsuit. Don't know if this is correct, but oh my goodness this is a mess.

I wish that you had told me that earlier in the thread. I would not have wanted to insult your daughter's extracurricular activities...at least to your face like I did. My family has 2 female former HS and college athletes. So having spent a lot of time in gyms and ball fields with female athletes over the years...many of my opinions were formed by the female athletes with whom I discussed and received their views wrt this topic. So I'm sorry if I offended.

It was UK cheerleading retreat... a UK sponsored event...UK is responsible. Why is that so hard for you to comprehend? and this was not just a one time thing.
It was also reported that coaches knew of the drinking. I am 100% sure they said no drinking. Plausible deniability doesn't stick as well as it used to.
example:
My office has an event that I sponsor, and I don't oversee and and something happens, I AM RESPONSIBLE. I once has an employee (unknown alcoholic) have an accident and she claimed she had just left an office luncheon that I had sponsored. Lies, no luncheon...she did not even work that day; but the police questioned me and I had to show that she was not at work that day.

Another example: Fraternities have someone die or get hurt...that fraternity president may have his life ruined, it has happened.

oh and change makes the world better... around 40% of vehicular deaths were attributed to drunk driving throughout the 80s. More stringent enforcement in this **** world of yours has dropped to around 29%...

take your fake outrage somewhere...definetely putting you on ignore. you bring nothing to this board...oh, i also thought this board was only for your stupid basketball insight...wth happened to that pov? You should not even be posting about this...irony at its best

Dang. Entire UK sports program will be given death penalty by the NCAA. This is just the thing they were looking for.
Sure this is in jest, but l wouldn't be surprised at all if this happened . They need to throw the book at one of the blue bloods and goodness knows it isn't going to be one of the untouchables that they've had/have a ton of evidence on.

UK conducted a three month investigation before making this decision, so why do you think they didn't listen tor any "evidence or tesitimony to the contrary"?

Do you honestly believe UK would conduct a three month investigation without ever listening to the coaches and cheerleaders' side of the story?

Lol, I can't tell if this is sattire or if you are serious.

I didn't know UBER drivers hosted business parties, but if your "office" host a party and provides alcohol, then yes, you legally would be responsible. However, if you don't provide it and someone sneaks it in, where is your liability? You aren't legally responsible for the actions of legal adults unless you help contribute to them.

If you hosted a business party at the Hyatt and one of your employees sneaks in drugs and ODs in the bathroom, how is that your liability?

Lol, if the president of the frat or the fraternity in general contributed, then yes, they could he held liable. However, if a couple random frat guy sneak some booz into the frat house after being told it was against the rules and then get alcohol poisoning, it is highly unlikely the president or fraternity will suffer anything more than a warning. Do you perhaps have some instances you can cite otherwise? :)

I am all for holding people who drink and drive responsible. However, I think it would be ignorant to hold the liquor store, the manufacturer, bartender or so forth responsible instead of the dumbass who actually broke the law/rules. Also, you do know increases in public transportation has been credited for lowering the rate of vehicular accidents and deaths. While enforcement has help as well, it would be very shortsighted to credit it alone. Seems odd you have jumped from cheerleaders smuggling in booz on a lake retreat to alcohol related automobile deaths and DUI. Quite the leap.

Fake outrage? What am I outraged over? Just because I am of the belief the university should have held the student-athlete more accountable considering they are legal adults in college I am outraged? Again, quite the leap man.

I'm pretty sure I included recruiting, off-season updates, UK athletics News, practice reports and so forth. And I also said most people, not all. Look bud, I can see I obviously offended you or called into question your "status" as "top dog" on an anonymous basketball message board, but man...it's really not that serious. Just take a step back, cool off and collect yourself. Right now you are coming off very disgruntled and a little obsessed with me.

I did some searching today and this isn't the first time this has happened with both college and pro sports concerning cheerleaders. A very similar story in 2018 for Kansas and another with the Washington Redskins. College aged kids do stupid things, and there is peer pressure to participate, and hazing. But, the adults in this case watched or went along with it and they should be dismissed for stupidity. Really didn't think no one would every find out? Just takes one girl, one religious person, one disgruntled, whatever. Adults are supposed to be............adults.

Ouch. I come offering an olive branch and you come up with that? I was simply adding some context to my opinion...that I learned from other female athletes....as to their views of cheer leading. No one doubts the athleticism of someone who can do flips etc.... And as for some pat on the back? You can go back to every post I have ever made on here and you will not see a single mention of my family. I don't roll that way or if I did I'd have mentioned...as seen on ESPN for example. ;-)

You live in a fantasy world where lawyers don't exist and underage drinkers always know when to say when.
Do you really think those coaches had no clue what was going on all around them for an entire weekend? If so, they should be fired for being that f'ing clueless alone.
The hypotheticals I mentioned are the types of scenarios that well paid, intelligent adults with foresight use to determine whether the adults in charge are worthy of that responsibility.
Should the cheerleaders have made the adult decisions and abstained from the things they did. Yes, but being right doesn't always mean your aren't wrong too.
Your mentality is why lawyers like "The Hammer" make a good living.

Hilarious. The entire world shut down completely for two months and we still have over 90 thousand dead Americans today but the warnings about this virus were bad information?
How many dead would there be today if we had left everything wide open??? Concerts, schools, churches, subways, airline flights from China, NCAA tournament games, etc.
Do you really think everyone would be out shopping and going to work if they are watching dead bodies pile up at hospitals across the country and having to take off work to attend funerals?

Before that could be answered we would have to allow the already flawed models to account for how many of these activities would originate in NYC and New Jersey metro areas. Would the attendees still be allowed/forced to use the infectious disease spreading tubes (subway) as they were allowed to do in NY-NJ 24/hrs per day. I believe however that a week or so ago they finally decided to do a daily UV cleaning to the displeasure of the hobos.

So my guess is that outside of a very small region...had we just walled that poorly managed area off....the bodies would not have been piling up at all. Unless the of course NY continued the insane practice of sending the infected to nursing homes for safe keeping.

Very quick after reading this.
The UK cheerleading squad are legit athletes and should be considered gymnasts. Watching what they do requires the same dedication, hard work, skill, and risks of any other student athlete if not more than most.

also corona virus isn’t a Hoax. The shut down and quarantine was required because it was knew and unknown and the curve had to be slowed so our hospitals were not equipped to handle the sheer amount cases that would of happened if they didn’t shelter in place. The quarantine isn’t a solution to end the spread of the virus it was meant to slow the spread of the virus. Big difference. Now people are going crazy cause they think masks are infringing on their rights and that’s absurd. Quicker we can slow the spread the quicker we can get back to normal and masks are a small price to pay to help in that effort. God bless Kentucky

Very quick after reading this.
The UK cheerleading squad are legit athletes and should be considered gymnasts. Watching what they do requires the same dedication, hard work, skill, and risks of any other student athlete if not more than most.

You are arguing something that I don't think anyone argued. The argument is NOT whether they are athletes or athletic. I mentioned gymnasts several times as the comparison. The argument is and has been....is cheer a SPORT. It is not.

As for masks... I am currently wearing one. The virus is not a hoax. I wear the mask to protect others from me. I would hope you and others would do the same.

As for the quarantine...it was to flatten the curve. It also helps buy time to a cure. We very quickly got past the hysteria of putting beds in the Lou Fairgrounds and in Nutter. That was posing and an overreaction for the media. As was manufacturing millions of ventilators. IMO it does not help for the government to lie about the use of masks so they could grab them. I understand why because people would have hoarded every one of them around the globe. But telling us no and then yes...was a lie. Allows for conspiracy theorists to have a hay day.

Further a one-size-fits-all solution is nonsense. Idaho North Dakota Maine WVa Vermont Wyoming Hawaii Montana and Alaska combined have had just 367 deaths and just 11,000 total case. Why should they be restricted to what NYC is doing just because of the media circus?

Haha, so where is your legal degree from? [laughing]Can you cite some cases with a previous precedent where your outcome was upheld? [winking]

As long as they didn't provide alcohol or encourage the drinking, ultimately it won't matter what they knew. Not to mention, all of the interviews with students clearly state they snuck it in without permission, approval, or knowledge by the coaches. They even admitted they placed the liquor in Gatorade and water bottles in an attempt to hide it from the coaches. That legally proves intent to decieve and provides a plausible expectation that the coaches did not in fact know or knowingky allow alcohol on this trip. We are talking about legal adults with the mental capacity to graduate high school, get admitted to college and enroll. Everyone of those kids has a responsibility to make their own legal and life choices. Blaming other adults because they were born a few years beforehand luckily isn't the legal precedent in this country.
