Yeah, I would say due to his height, you want him to stay at D End. That's awesome news, too. A true NT needs to be a slightly more squat dump truck of a dude, no taller than 6'2". They're like a boulder that goes and plugs up the middle. Stoltenberg had that problem where he was big and strong, but his height was a disadvantage because it allows the center and a guard to get under you and throw you off balance. The more squat you are, the less likely that is to happen.

I thought he was looking a little heavy for his age/size at the All-American game (and Benhart was/still is undersized). 315 doesn’t seem like a good weight for him “yet”, but Duval will get him in shape.
Given our veteran depth, I’d be surprised to see him play any more than 4 games.

Casey Rogers got some love from Coach T for his improvement, and I’m really hoping Tate Wildeman can emerge. I like the move for Brant Banks to go to OL where most teams recruited him. Maybe there’ll be room for Ty to get some game action esp if we can start winning some games handily.

I used to think that NT needed to be in the 6'2" range. And that was probably true back 10-15 years ago, when the Centers in college football were all 6'1"-6'3". But now you rarely see a center shorter than 6'3" and there are some as tall as 6'5". I think you can have NT as tall as 6'4" or maybe 6'5"

I still think this has to do with the direction of the force being applied. The NT needs to command a double-team from the center and one of the guards to be successful. To me, the lower the center of gravity, plus strength and overall size, is the winning combo.

And not all 6-4/6-5 guys are the same. Given my torso/leg length ratio, if I were 6-4 I would be playing NT.

Who in the NFL has a NT that tall worth a ****? Just asking, not trying to start crap. Ngata was the prototypical nose

And he was in his prime 10 years ago. There are 14 guys in the NFL right now, I believe I counted 3 that are listed at 6'2", the rest are taller.

And the two best NT on Nebraska are 6'3" and 6'4".

Ngata is listed at 6'4"

So we're saying, you can be tall as long as you are still built like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Ted Washington being 6'5" but also weighing damn near 400 pounds helps even that out. If he were 6'5" but 300 lbs, he would be a DE or a 4/3 DT, not an NT.

Clear as mud?

Vince Wilfork is the prototypical nose. 6’2” 325.
This. That guy clogged up the middle like nobody else in his generation. He gave a numbers advantage to the defense every play because he took on 2 olinemen every snap. And it wasn't even necessarily because they were double teaming him, it was because he engaged the line that way.

He's got a lot of bad weight needs to slim down or he's a back-up DE, maybe a rotating NT?

Not sure what Duval envisions here.

I really hope he stays at DE. 6'6 is hard for a NG to win the leverage battle.

In fact i expect him to reshape his 315 to around 305 and look rock solid by the time he says playing time.

Holla

And it could be a multiple year "rock solid" metamorphosis.

Trying to remember his measurables when we recruited him... has he been slacking off since he signed on the dotted line? He didn’t look like he had a lot of bad weight...

Or am I thinking of someone else?

And he could. In a 3-4 the DEs should be very mobile DL. If you have good olbs......

Don't bring Daishon into this discussion, but the two are striking similar in body mass.

Robinson had absolutely massive guns, from every photo I saw. So, I would definitely want him as a strong-side DE if at all possible.

Has way more to do with your ability to play with leverage than it does how tall you are. I think they got a really good one in Robinson. They're doing a really good job of building that DL so they have 9 guys and you don't really wanna have to line up across from any of them.

They're probably the early pick for most improved position group.
