For all you Tubby haters out there, think back to the 1998 team that Tubby coached to the National Championship.

IMHO, no other UK coach, not named Adolph Rupp (and only the younger version of Coach Rupp), could have coached that team to a National Championship!!!! :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

I'll take it a bit further and add: IMHO, no other National Championship coach, aside from Coach Rupp in his prime, could have won the Title with that 1998 team. :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

As a floor coach, IMHO, Tubby was simply the best ever!!!!!!!! :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

Your insight with respect to posters is laughable. :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

And is exceeded in its laughablity only by your apparent lack of BB insight. :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

After 1998 Tubby never beat a team in the NCAA tournament seeded above a 5 seed and just 1 seeded above a 6 seed . Yeah that sounds like a great coach .

Alotta bitterness in this thread. Tubby's jersey will be in the rafters one day and he won a championship here. Yes he was ultimately not a good recruiter and couldn't land enough talent to keep UK in the hunt every year but BCG set us back further than anything Tubby did. Let it go
Don't act like BCG isn't trashed on this site .

That 1998 team had a bunch of future pros in the front court, and a talented, experienced backcourt.

Pretty sure there's another coach out there somewhere who could have taken them to a Title.

Not that Tubby didn't do a great job with them.

it's such a myth that 98 was some slouch team that could barely tie it's own shoes.

look back at the starting five then look down the Bench. If that team were playing this year the'd be top 3 (probably number 1) all season with probably the best chance at winning the title. Pitino was coming off of back to back title games and a natty. The suggestion he couldn't win a title with that team is flat out stupid. And it's been peddled in large part due to Pitino's own comments.

That's not to say Tubby didn't do a good job in 98, but it's not like he took a team of scrubs and won an NBA title. Hell, if Rick had been here I doubt we ever even get behind Duke during tournament. Instead of "comeback" cats, it'd probably be "Smack down" cats.

Tubby didn't win a title, Kentucky won the title and was gracious enough to let him enjoy the ride.
I can't imagine how deadly that team wouldve been if we had a solid coach. Wayne Turner, Nazr Mohammed, Scott Padgett, Maggiore, Shepherd, Allen Edwards....they were just looking so awful all season long that expectations weren't high. The fact that Tubby had similar talent years later, but sucked, speaks volumes on his coaching and player development.

Absolutely agree with your statement "If that team were playing this year the'd be top 3 (probably number 1) all season with probably the best chance at winning the title." It shows how much the talent level of college basketball has declined in the past 19 years!!!

The remainder of your post: Well . . . it's simply hogwash or to put it in today's vernacular Fake News.

compare Tubby's team in 98 to Cal's team in 2015. Which was better?

I dont necessarily believe 98 couldn't beat '15. I've heard that statement over and over, and I don't believe they couldn't.

Whatever the point not sure.

Who even talks like that? The 2012 team had overwhelming talent, I'm sure there's another coach somewhere who could've taken them to a title. That's hater talk.

No one says the 98 team was a slouch, the 98 team had no business winning that title is the point. Arizona, Duke, UNC, and Kansas were head and shoulders better than anyone, they were on another level.

No I'm not CNN and the rest of the post is accurate. Should I start naming the team (which we all know already) and you tell me that team wasn't championship worthy in 1998? You're going to tell me Tuuby Smith, who never again coached in the final four, could win a title with that team but Rick, Cal, or others couldn't?

And how does that work?

Rick Pitino got that nonsense started when Tubby's seat became warm around 04 and he wanted him to stay put at UK. Then fans like yourself bought into it and we've heard it for over a decade. It's not true.

Trying to corner the market on Fake News????

I don't recall posting that Tubby won a title. Rather, I posted that "Tubby coached" the team to a title.

Yeah, those 4 loses were terrible, thank good we haven't looked as awful as that 35-4 team since Flubby/Ten Loss Tubby left.

Wasn't aware that Pitino tried to cool Tubby's hot seat. That was probably the most decent thing he has done since he left UK.

As for the rest of your post. You are entitled to your opinion, however wrong it may be! :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

Another poster in this thread stated that no other championship coach, other than Rupp, could have won with that team.

I was responding without quoting. Some others have quoted the post. Look around a bit.

As for the strength of the four teams you mentioned, we only played one of them, as I recall. Such are the breaks of the tournament.
