Then move on.

You do realize next year the recruiting is already way better than last 4 years right?

If you going to add IF, then what if Cal gets Banchero or Kuminga to join our roster next year? That's Cal's best class...

If you start comparing Cal's worst years to tubby's normal years, then no ****...it compares. Even Coach K would compare to tubby. Tubby would be better than Coach wright... Izzo and self could only dream of tubby's performance...

We already know that Cal can get the best classes and still flop. He has mediocre classes, but still sends kids to the NBA that don't have any business even sniffing it (Kevin Knox - good example already).

I'm over the "best recruiting class" jibberish. Take these classes and coach them and win games we're supposed to win. He's got all this NBA talent, yet he loses to teams that literally have zero players that will play in the NBA (and maybe not even Europe or Asia. Stacking our rosters with future NBA talent, then not winning games against some of the worst teams in college basketball, is just unacceptable. Tubby performed the same with less talent - how do you explain that??

And I don't care about other teams. I care about OUR team. Just because Izzo and K have bad years doesn't make our bad seasons more bearable. You are clearly out to lower the bar by setting up examples of other teams as if we are supposed to just bend over and take mediocrity, all because it happens to the best of the best elsewhere.

Buwahahhahahaa maybe you should look yourself in the mirror and do the things you are supposed to do every time.

Cal asked Knox to stay...

You are Still confused about experience, talent, and current capability...

Again, you are crying about coach's slump. And when he has this many top end recruit, he has usually performed.

Flop? You should realize they just showed (last year) that Cal seems to perform better in tourney time than other coaches...

So Elite 8s are now the new bar? I thought Final Fours and the last weekend were what UK fans wanted??

Soon we'll be like Gonzaga and IU - ecstatic for making so many S16s - unless Calipari and his staff can turn this around and have a couple of 2010-2015-type years.
When did i say Elite 8’s are the new bar? You have morons on here using a select few years to compare Tubby to Cal. It’s not even close. If Final 4 runs are what fans want and expect consistently, Cal has had more success than any other coach at UK outside of Rupp.

Lets look at the top programs we are competing with..

-So we're on par with Duke the last 4 years if that's the case....we've had the exact same results
Soon Duke will be like Gonzaga and IU....by that logic

-Kansas has made 3 Final 4's under Bill Self in 16 seasons....tell me they aren't elite and are falling back. (hint they aren't)

-UNC the last 2 years
26-11 Round of 32
29-7 Sweet 16
And they're currently 8-8 in the middle of conference play...on their way to a losing record....but there's not calls for Roy's head or saying they aren't elite.

-Louisville? They haven't been past the first weekend since 2015

-UCLA...we all know how that's going

-Villanova...2 titles but they didn't advance past the first weekend in 8 of the last 10 years....

In summary...who is doing better than Cal? I mean Duke has the 2nd title under coach K and that's the difference. We've had a pretty good team every year under Calipari. He set the bar so high those first 6 years that we got used to that level being so high.

When Tubby was here...we could point to programs doing better and coaches that were ahead of us....we were an 8/9 seed his last 2 years. No Final four's in 9 straight years. We had become the 2nd best program in the SEC.

Kentucky under Cal is still a top program and we haven't slipped behind anyone....

It's been a while since he's been to a FF. That's the point the "morons" are making. They've identified an unpleasant trend the past 4-5 years that is right there in front of our faces. I'm not understanding how people can simply say "yeah, well, those first 5 years though....".

As soon as I saw you lining us up against all those other teams, I just ignored it. I don't care about other teams or how we compare to them. I care about our team and comparing Calipari to Calipari. First 5 years, he killed it. These past 4-5, what's going on? Doesn't matter to me that other coaches and teams have bad periods - all I care about is why is Calipari seeming to trend downward. You simply can't ignore the elephant in the room that is comparing Cal's first five to his last five.

It’s been 4 seasons since we last made a final four (5 if we don’t make it this year). Which is the same as Duke.

Over the past 20 years, Coach K regularly has gaps of 5-6 years between final fours. Before UNC’s title game loss to Villanova, Williams went 7 years between appearances. Bill Self went 6 years before making Kansas’ most recent final four.

Point being, these types of gaps are the norm for elite coaches and programs. If we go 7-8 seasons without a final four, then it’s appropriate to say it’s “been a while.”

If you think it’s been a while after only 4-5 seasons, then you’re expecting Cal to perform at a level that no one in the history of the sport has been able to sustain over a long period.

What’s your definition of “a while”? We’ve been to 17 Final 4’s in over 100 years of basketball. Cal has been to 4 of those in a 10 year span.

Other programs HAS EVERY THING TO DO WITH IT!

It's he's slipped...but when someone slips you have to compare it to someone? Like who has he slipped behind? You have to judge someone by what the game is doing as a whole. When you play in a tournament against 67 other teams...the other 67 team matter because that's who you play. That's your competition. Other teams are who we go against...

Slipping means we are no longer a top program. We still are in the same position today as a program that we were in 2015....we get top recruits and we have a good chance to win the title every year.

2010 1 Seed
2011 4 Seed
2012 1 Seed
2013 NIT (DID NOT MAKE TOURNAMENT
2014 9 Seed
2015 1 Seed

2016 4 Seed
2017 2 Seed
2018 5 Seed
2019 2 Seed

But again...who is out doing us...yes the last 4 years haven't been as strong as the first 6. Although 2017 and 2019 we had 2 title contending teams. In a 1 game scenario...yeah things happen. Where is the slip?

Key fact though....in Calipari's first 6 years that you are bringing up....he went to the NIT in one of those years. In 2014...we were national runn-ups....but don't forget we were the 9 seed in the tournament that year. In the last 4 that we've SLIPPED....we haven't had anywhere near bad seasons like 2013 and 2014.

If Luke Maye doesn't hit that shot and we win or if our shot goes in against Auburn at the end of regulation...none of this conversation matters.I mean truthfully a Fox injury mid-season in 201 and Reid's injury last year kept us from being a 1 seed.

I judge the quality of Cal's (any coach really) teams by if they have the ability to win a national title by March. Bad luck happens...but 2 of the last 4 years we had a team capable of winning a title. This year...lets see what happens.

The same crying was being done in 2011....
"Without John Wall and Cousins Cal just can't do it. One and Done's can't win"
Final Four and National Title later Silence hits....

Then 2013-2014....
"Cal just can't do it...his time has past and its showing he can't do it long term. Miller, Lamb, and Jones coming back was luck...but now he can't do it with all freshman"
Greatest tournament run we've ever seen and then the best win total in an NCAA season later...silence

People have been complaining about Cal even during his "Golden Era" (That featured a 9 seed and an NIT appearance)

UK is getting ripped off Cal is starting to get to comfortable in the job and it's showing
Im hoping he can recapture the glory and swagger of the first 5 seasons. These last 5 have been mediocre. I dont know why some on here wont acknowledge it, but facts are facts. I think the difference IMO between comparing Cal to Tubby is the ceilings. I think all but the most insane on here can agree that with a few philosophical changes on how we build our roster and develop for the programs success instead of the individual, we could do great things. This self inflicted handicapping....its tough. If Im being honest I havent missed watching this many games in a season since I was out on my own 15 yrs ago and footed the bill for cable. I dont say that to be negative, many here have expressed similar things. Its just a bit of apathy has set in because of all this. It isnt Kentucky basketball. It just isnt.

I’m disgusted with this team and with this performance tonight. Cal has got to get his head out of his ***.

With that said, Tubby went to just 2 elite 8’s his final 8 years here. He lost in the second round multiple times. Florida completely dominated us for the last part of his tenure. Our program was in a bad shape when he left and the keys were given to a drunk maniac.

This is not comparable. At all.

Agree. If Maye’s shot misses and one of our shots goes in, as time runs out, we would have 2 finals fours in the last two years.

It sucks the above two things didn’t happen. But are people going to say that two shots are the difference between total success and total failure? I certainly don’t.

I believe come March, UK will be one of the teams with a real shot to run the table. I also feel they could lose in the first weekend, as could so many of the other favorites as well

First 5 seasons
2010 1 Seed
2011 4 Seed
2012 #1 Overall Seed
2013 NIT
2014 9 Seed

3 Final 4 Trips (3-2)
4 Elite 8 trips (3-1)
1 time missing the tournament

Last 5
2015 #1 Overall Seed
2016 4 Seed
2017 2 Seed
2018 5 Seed
2019 2 Seed

1 Final 4 trips (0-1)
3 Elite 8 trips (1-2)
4 Sweet 16 Trips (3-1)
5 Round of 32 trips (4-1)

He had a national title and a #1 overall seed in the first 5. He had a team go 38-1 in the last 5.

The first 5 years he did better in the tournament...the last 5 the difference is an OT and last second shot in 2 elite 8 losses.

He's only missed getting out of the first weekend twice....1 in the first 5 and 1 in the last 5. He's won a tournament game in all of the last 5 years....and well didn't make the tournament one year in the first 5.

He has had consistent seeding and hasn't missed the tournament in his last 5 years....the first 5 he had an NIT trip and a 9 seed team....

And I think seeding and regular season performance is an important indicator as well...it show consistency.

In reality....it was his first 3 years that carry the first 5 years...he's been consistently a title contender for much of the last 7 years.

Has Calipari missed the NCAA tournament in the last 4 years? NO
-Oh boy...2013. Loss to Robert Morris. 30 point loss at Tennessee. 4 non-conference losses. Missed the tournament.

Has Calipari had anywhere close to a 9 seed the last 4 years? NO
-The 2014 team that lost at South Carolina who went like 14-20. 9 losses going into the tournament...

-Even 2011....went 6-6 on the road in the SEC...some ROUGH losses

-Go back to 2010...the 1 seed. Remember the last second shot it took to beat Miami of Ohio who went 12-15 as a MAC team? Or the Overtime needed to beat a 14-18 Stanford team? But they had big wins over UNC and Uconn in non-conferenc....oh wiat both of those teams went to the NIT

We keep glossing over things acting like we were unbeatable and there weren't any peaks and valleys over those years...there were. And through it all we've still won more games and tournament games than anyone over the last 10 years.

And saying that we can't look at what other teams are doing is dumb. Duke lost to Stephen F Austin at Home. UNC lost to Wofford at home and Clemson for the first time ever!

College basketball isn't the same game it was in 2010. The mid-majors are better than ever.

Since 2016 Cal has:

*Lost to 20 unranked teams.

*Posted a meager record of 20-17 against top 25 teams.

*Posted a 4-6 record against Tennessee.

*Fielded a 9-loss team and an 11-loss team.

*Suffered embarrasing NCAA Tournament losses to Indiana and Kansas State.

*Failed to advance to the Final Four.

All this sounds very Tubby-esque to me.
Fair enough, but this season still has to play out, and next season is shaping up to be a Blockbuster.

This season is wide open, and Cal’s Cats will be clicking on all cylinders! Have faith.

This team has worse losses than that NIT team (which was only NIT due to a top 5 player Noel getting injured) that team only had 1 sub 100 loss on the season.. this team already has 3.

Cool, they went to the NIT. In a GARBAGE SEC for that matter.

And bad losses are the norm in college basketball at the moment...it's how the game is in 2020. It's not 2010.

I'm not going to say that losses are "INEXCUSABLE OMG HOW COULD THEY EVER LOSE" because Cal doesn't coach for big regular season numbers....he coaches to get his team playing great basketball going into March. And pretty much every year other than 2013...I've felt good about the team's play going into the tournament. That's what it is all about. Losses will happen. Sometimes they happen in March in a 1 game scenario...

This season isn't over and I'd imagine this team will (checks notes) play in the NCAA tournament. And judging by Cal's track record...we will be winning multiple games once we get to the tournament with a good chance to be the champion once it narrows down to 8-16 teams.

We struggled in conference play in 2011, 2013, & 2014.

2010, 2012, & 2015 we didn't have struggles and those were all-time great years. We had the #1 pick in the draft those 3 years too. We've swung and missed on some top guys...but you act like the last 4 years we've been on the Tubby level when we got ride of him...and that's just hyperbole because we are nowhere close to that level.

Bill Self never has bad losses. Always wins the Big 12. Always has a really good seed in the tournament. But....16 years and only 3 Final Four's. His teams usually do worse than ours in the NCAA tournament.

The first 5-6 years had the 2013 and 2014 teams. That was the WORST stretch of the Calipari era...not even up for debate. Yes we had a good tourney run...but we played some BAD basketball. We were unranked for a good part of those years....we had an NIT and a 9 seed. Nothing in the last 4 years has been near that....

Now this year could get worse...but a road loss at SC (we lost there in 2010, 2014, & 2018) is par the course for our teams. IT's our what? 2nd road game of the year. IF we lost this game in late February...yeah I'd be worried.

Then he shouldn’t get paid like Saban since he doesn’t get Saban like results. He also got a lifetime contract. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for a final four every 3 to 4 years when he’s getting paid like he does.

When Cal wins 5 titles like K or 3 like Roy he can have a pass on having a final four slump. Until then, with the way he recruits, he's underachieving.

*Fielded a 9-loss team and an 11-loss team.

*Suffered embarrasing NCAA Tournament losses to Indiana and Kansas State.

*Failed to advance to the Final Four.

All this sounds very Tubby-esque to me.

You should get medical attention or at least stop drinking alone. Another Loss Troll, there be be a tribe on here waiting on losses.

We only have 1 in the past 21 years as well. I get that the end game is being at your best come tournament time, but damn, I’m a season ticket holder and it would be nice to enjoy some good basketball throughout the whole season.
We’ve been a two seed twice over the last four years. People have short memories or ridiculous standards.

When Cal wins 5 titles like K or 3 like Roy he can have a pass on having a final four slump. Until then, with the way he recruits, he's underachieving.

So coaches with fewer titles are expected to make final fours on a more frequent and on-going basis than coaches with more titles? That seems a bit absurd.

At any rate, 4 seasons is not a slump. It’s a normal gap between final fours for elite coaches and elite schools. When a gap gets up to 7 years, then it’s fair to start question if it’s a slump.

Coach K has had gaps of 5, 5, and 6 years between final four appearances. Williams has had gaps of 9 and 7 years, the first of which was before he won his first title.

And these types of gaps are similar for nearly all coaches with multiple final fours:
  • Dean Smith: 4 and 9 years
  • Izzo: 4, 4 and 5 years
  • Rupp: 6. 7 and 8 years
  • Knight: 5, 5, and 6 years
  • Calhoun: 5 and 5 years
  • Olson: 4, 6 and 8 years
  • Donovan: 6 and 7 years
If you consider Cal’s current 4 year gap to be a “slump”, then it seems fair to question your understanding of the sport.

IMO

The Tubbyesque comparisons are related to complacency & the stubbornness to evolve & make changes.

Not being Fast Paste

Grind it out half court rock fights

Inexcusable L’s to obviously inferior opponents

Fans lowering expectations

Then he shouldn’t get paid like Saban since he doesn’t get Saban like results. He also got a lifetime contract. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for a final four every 3 to 4 years when he’s getting paid like he does.

That’s a worthless comparison for a few reasons.

One, it’s much easier to sustain success in football when the NFL forces players to basically all stay for 3-4 years. Cal’s results would look much different if he could stockpile talent like Anthony Davis and have them each for 3-4 years.

Two, football doesn’t have to deal with a 64 team, single elimination tournament. The structure of the NCAA tournament is the worst possible approach to selecting a champion. It’s very design increases the likelihood the best team will not win the title.

Third, just his most recent results aren’t what drives Cal’s pay. Cal’s pay is based on what it takes to keep other teams from hiring him away. It’s market driven, so it is unreasonable to expect him to get to a final four every 3-4 years based on salary. Especially when the entire history of college basketball proves that to be an unreasonable expectation.

K has been at Duke 40 years. Roy was at Kansas 14 years, and UNC for 16. Hardly a fair comparison.

That is in fact why I think you are an idiot. Not replicating the success we had during the first five years, over the last five years, is only a failure for someone whose expectations are incredibly out of wack. Five years is nothing. Acting like we’ve been mediocre over that time period is stupid.

He also lost in the round of 32 as the NUMBER 1 OVERALL seed in the NCAA Tournament.
That's true but if we keep dropping games to **** teams this year then we will be in the NIT again for the 2nd time under coach Cal! We've already got 4 **** losses this year compared to 1 quality win! I've now included Ohio State as a **** loss because after they beat us they lost 4 straight!

When did i say Elite 8’s are the new bar? You have morons on here using a select few years to compare Tubby to Cal. It’s not even close. If Final 4 runs are what fans want and expect consistently, Cal has had more success than any other coach at UK outside of Rupp.
Comparing Tubby's last 4 years here is pretty damn close to the last four years of Cal, whether you choose to admit it or not. The trajectory is not good, don't know why you can't see that.

That’s insane last year we were really good. We beat #1 UT by like 20 during college game day, had that great win at Auburn, lost in OT of the elite eight. I mean how the hell does that compare to Tubby last 4 years?? WTF. Last year literally compares to 2003, Tubbys best year other than 98. 2017 was a great year - Monks game against UNC, destroying UCLA in the sweet sixteen, losing to the national champions on a buzzer beater. That compares to when we had Bobby Perry and Sherry Thomas starting? Lol

we get it, we all want a championship. But why the hell some of you just make up random **** I’ll never understand.

WTF are you talking about? You said the last 4 years of Tubby compare to Cal, they don’t. Is that not what you said? They don’t. Then you posted comparing national championships?? Ok, so now we’re comparing their whole tenure? You think Tubby has been as good as Cal? I mean you don’t even know what the hell youre arguing, just slinging ****. Either way you clearly have a hard on for Tubby, I think Cal is way better, like most sane people.

Buddy, you can say this over and over as many times as you want, but you’re not changing these clown’s opinions

you just described 2 out of the last 3 years exactly right. I thought the 2017 and 2019 were a blast. Came up short and that always hurts, but we’ve come up short 37 of my 40 years on this earth

This is exactly it right here it's about winning National titles at UK it's a toss up a title a piece and Cal has had a **** ton more talent than Tubby ever had making double the $ Tubby did as coach !
