This post is not so much about him as a basketball player but the rarity of him in this NIL/Portal era. He will be a third year player at a top program. For UK, that is a rarity for a scholarship player. We have groomed mercenaries in college basketball. Their connection to a school is kind of like someone in the military who lived in a lot of places and thinks fondly of some but never really established roots. College basketball players before Cal got to UK would not be OAD. Now? OAD at a school is commonplace. Noah is getting the college experience. Digging deeper and making more of that traditional connection. As an alum, he will appreciate UK more for it. Not that it’s good or bad. He is just not the norm in today’s basketball world.

The last Kentucky in-state players on scholarship who stayed four (4) years were Derek Willis and Dominique Hawkins on the 2016-17 team.
Two guys who took a minute to find their role but worked hard and were real contributors late in their careers. It’s odd to think the era for that kind of player may have come to an end.

The kid can’t get open. That’s the problem. 90% of the time he has the ball, he’s 30-feet from the basket. He receives the ball, is guarded, with no hope of getting around his man, he passes the ball. Rinse, repeat.
And all that gets in his head so much he panics and misses even when he’s wide open. Poor kid. And poor us because even if he could only hit the open ones we could still really use him given how well recruiting is going.

Maybe a sports psychologist would help settle his game nerves, if that's a problem ... ?? I think Justin Edwards went to one and then scored 28 points.

I would put his basketball IQ up there with Reed’s, the kid sees things before they happen like rebounding and some loose balls that he gets because of his court awareness. He is a good shooter, he just needs a little confidence in game to show it cause we all saw what he did in hs. You don’t have several 60 point games just cause you’re bigger than most plus he played PG in hs from 8th grade on. There’s a place for him at UK but he does need to be surrounded by other better players, imagine MM on the block getting double teamed then kicking it out to Trent for a wide open 3……..again that would mean Pope putting our center on the block vs playmaking at the top of the key but it would be nice to see.

Jeff Brassow was always a man in motion and ran his defenders ragged, running them into screens. I don't know if Noah can get into the kind of physical shape to do that. Pitino often said he wished he had 5 Brassows on the floor. And Brassow took Rodrick Rhodes starting spot in the latter part of the 1994 season.

He is still the best shooter on the team. Anyone who saw his games in the state tourney knows this. With a PG he will be the 45% 3 point shooter he has always been..
I think he will often be on the floor with 2 PGs. He will get his chance to prove your point. Both years in college, his percentage has been 33% from 3. He needs to prove he can get his shot off quickly and needs to hit 40+% to be of value on the floor. If he is in and not scoring, we are often a man down on defense.

The high school state tournament is a little less competitive than the SEC lol. I don’t care if we bring in 1997 John Stockton, the kid will never sniff 40% 3pt let alone 45%

He should be at a program like Dayton if he wants quality rotation minutes, but it doesn’t hurt a thing having him on a 15 man roster, and I like the kid.

I would love for Trevor Noah to succeed at UK, and I hope that better ball distribution and offensive movement will enable him to do so. But after draining 4 of 5 three-point attempts against Tennessee Tech and 3 of 6 against NC Central, Noah lost his shot. Over the last 19 games of the season, he went 5 of 25 from long range. He struggled to find an open look, and he hesitated when he found one. You could see that he was in his head. I wish him a clean slate in the year ahead.

Agree. He hit his first 12 of 30 attempts for 40%. Then I think the sporadic playing time got to him. From the IU game on (give or take a game or two) he only shot 21 more threes. He didn’t shoot it well last year but I think he can be a 40%+ three point shooter.

Big if true. I'll be rooting for it.

He had 60 because of the region and state he played in. Heat HS player no doubt. Probably low mid major level in college. Nothing wrong with that but he won’t ever be what we hope he can hear IMHO. Kentucky basketball in HS is weak overall compared to the national level. It’s just a fact. We all hope he can be a nice piece at some point here but when he’s in the game he is scared. He doesn’t produce. Reed was so much beyond him as a player it’s not even funny. He’s a rarity. Look at Jasper Johnson. He was a way better prospect and even he looked lost in college. Having a PG will definitely help no doubt about that but if you can play at this level, you can play.

That’s because when he plays major teams he can’t get a shot off. It’s just a fact right now. He has zero ability to get by his man. All the have to do is face guard him 30 feet from the rim and dare him to try and shoot.

lol. Yes, because those WIDE THE EFF OPEN looks he clanked all year long will go in now that Washington or Furmans PG is passing him the ball? Seems logical.

With 5 in 5 coming Noah will be on Ky teams that win 125 games including 8+ NCAA GAMES. He’ll play a few years in Europe & come back & become a coach.

You make some good points, but let’s be honest about Reed…he sh** the bed in the SEC and NCAA tournament games. Looked absolutely terrified against Oakland. Typically freshman behavior…play well in games that aren’t do-or-die, choke when the pressure’s on.

Yeah he absolutely did, I think Cal had that team all messed up by then though. His mind seemed to be on going pro honestly. He also plays well in the NBA which Trent will never sniff.

Harlan County? If that's our best shooter, we're in trouble! LOL
Ky basketball has been in trouble since 2017 & there are no more DIE HARD UK FANS than in HarlinCOUNTY. With 15 scholarships Kentucky should have at least 4 Ky kids on the roster every year.

Well, that’s obviously NOT who “he has always been”, given that he’s only a career 33% shooter in college.

I realize he smoked the nets against Ky high school competition (much like guys like Josh Carrier, Dontaie Allen, Jon Hood and Travis Perry did). But there’s a vast difference between that and doing it against SEC defenses. He’s yet to prove he can fully make that transition.
