Why do you think that? He was obviously here long enough that he gets it. I agree he isn't as 'showy' as Cal, but I wouldn't think he wouldn't have a strong enough personality.
Just seems like a stick in the mud, no emotion. But he definitely knows basketball

The name(and their wins vs loses record) of a replacement coach is not as important as their character.

I do not know much about most coaches but we need to know ahead of time the philosophy of the coach.

One and Done is not our style. But it worked twice while he was here, we won a championship and made a final four with the 38-1 team.

Cant really decide who fits at UK yet.

I see what you're saying, but maybe he'd be a little different as a HC. Mitch knows him, so I'm sure they've had the conversation before. Mitch would know if it's worth a call or not.

Okay here we go! I assume someone will start this thread sooner or later so might start it! If Cal were to leave ( no way he is getting fired) on his own before next season who is your top 5 candidates that would seriously consider the job. Please no Rick Pitino mentions and Brad Stevens isn't coming either! I am not sure any of my top 5 would come either. My top choice would be a huge stretch! I will do the foolish pleasure of starting first!

1. Jay Wright-Villanova ( I know....)
2. Chris Beard-Texas Tech ( I know he is in the Bobby Knight tree but different coaching style)
3. Mark Few-Gonzaga ( Says he would never leave Gonzaga but would he....)
4.Eric Mussleman-Arkansas ( doing a great job there, great recruiter)
5. Dana Altmon-Oregon ( would do a good job calming the program after CAL and likes veteran players)

Bash away! There a lot of young great coaches out there like Wes Miller at UNC Greensboro and Bob Richey at Furman who are not ready yet but great coaching talents!
Please stay away from Musselman, I think him and the staff that he has assembled in Fayetteville is one of the best around. His recruiting, scouting, game planning and in game adjustments are phenominal. Only time will tell, but so far, he has been a home run hire.

I really don’t even see the obsession with Drew
Same here. His name comes up often in these discussions. Do people realize he’s been at Baylor for 17 years and made it to the Elite Eight exactly 2 times? People always talk about Cals last 5 years tournament years. Here is Drew’s:

1st round loss (3 seed lost to a 14 seed)
1st round loss (5 seed lost to a 12 seed)
Sweet Sixteen (3 seed lost to a 7 seed)
NIT
2nd round loss

That name always boggles my mind.

The only person who could truly handle the pressure is Rick Pitino, but that ship has sailed. Billy Donovan would be the next choice, but I'm fairly sure Pitino would tell him not to take the job.

People are just looking at this year and think because Baylor is a good team he’d be a perfect fit here at UK

I would actually go Kenny Payne. Now hear me out. I'm just being a UK homer. KP knows Kentucky basketball better than anyone, and is certainly equipped to handle the HC duties at Kentucky. He knows recruiting. Been around long enough to build a good staff. The bonus is, he's considered a 'Kentucky guy" now. (Yes, I know). So the fanbase might give him a year or so longer to let him get a shot, while they might turn on an outsider quicker.
Kenny Payne can barely talk. He is borderline shy in front of the cameras. BCG showed this job is about much more than just coaching basketball. You are an ambassador for the state of KY. Being quiet and shy won't work here, especially for a guy with no HC experience.

I'm sticking with Cal and hoping it gets better. I still think he is the best man for the job he is just in the perfect storm right now. I can't say exactly why but for some reason Beard reminds me of a BCG situation where he is great in TX where he is but would be a flop here. Altman hasn't proven anything and doesn't seem at all like a UK coach to me. A UK coach is best when they have an edge. I don't think it would work at its best with a dull guy like Bennett. That doesn't mean he isn't a great coach, but for it to all come together at UK it has to be a great fit too. Nate Oats is the only one I can actually see with the job. That's the swagger, no fear winner, and upcoming star I can see being the next Pitino, Cal.
And Altman was the coach at Oregon while they paid to get Bol Bol and Louis King. There was a reason Cal backed off those kids. Say no to Altman.

Don't hit me, but Bobby Hurley understands blue blood programs and should be on the short list (even though he wore the wrong shade of blue).

I want Cal so I have not participated in any potential coach after Cal thread. I want the 2010-2015 Cal. Not the one making bizarro decisions and statements. He’s the man for UK and he’s got it in him. Now I want my state employee to deliver.
The only problem is, I don't think that Cal exists anymore. I want that Cal too, but I don't think he will ever be like that again.

That Cal no longer exists. Might as well want Rupp back.

Oats, Beard, Musselman, Holtman, and then one out of the box guy would be the logical pool I would assume.

Having lived in Charlottesville, VA for many years when Tony got there, (and met him) he isn't going to leave there. He MIGHT take the Duke job, even though I think Duke will stay in house with their next guy. I can assure you, there's nothing in Tony Bennett's DNA that wants anything to do with the coaching job at Kentucky. People just need to give up on that, and the Brad Stevens, dream.

I opened this thinking it was a discussion on our draft position. However, if you don’t start with Brad Stevens, you are not doing your job. I don’t care how far down the line we have to go, you start with the biggest fish and make them say no first. I would go Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, Jay Wright, Mark Few, and Tony Bennett as my top 5.

Brad Stevens is looking at a lifetime of draft picks and isn't leaving. And can personally guarantee that Bennett has ZERO interest in Kentucky.

I think, out of all the familiar names being floated around, Few is probably the best bet. ...and I don't think think he'd leave Gonzaga.

Let's be honest.

All of this would be different, losing included, if we felt like he had been building rosters with Kentucky's best interest at heart.

Ky has won more games and been to more final 4's than any school in the past 10 years.

We finished the season ranked in the top 10 in 2020. Very well could've made the final 4..

Cal. is not getting fired so if he leaves it's because fans ran him off.

No elite Coach will want anything to do with Ky if that's the scenario..

If I didn't love Ky Basketball with passion, I'd wish Cal would leave to punish the ridiculous fans that are posting all this nonsense.

Now go ahead and flip out and call me names but the season isn't over. I'm just as bummed as the next guy but bashing our coach and players does nothing to help. It's gonna hurt recruiting and if Cal leaves because the fans ran him off, it's not gonna help with the next hire.

Cal. has failed so far this year. He mismanaged his roster and he mismanaged the schedule. He's created a culture were it's embarrassing when a player is not ready for the NBA after year one and most will not stay more than 2 years. I have no doubt that Cal knows this and he's acknowledged most of what I've said.

Cal. needs to change some things IMO. Maybe he will and maybe he won't. At this point though running him off would be catastrophic for the program.
