I wish someone could reach out and help this guy out in his final day, and I am a hard one on crime! He needs a break? Governor Bevin this might be a good one to pardon

When he wanted to he could, he never seemed very interested in playing hard when I saw him. The crowd was any of the inmates that wanted to watch who were out on the yard at that time. I never felt comfortable playing down there and only did about 3 or 4 times. Although nothing ever happened involving outside teams that came in to play. A few years later two inmate teams were playing a game and during a time out somebody was stabbed in one of the huddles, after that they discontinued the policy of letting outside teams come in and play.

Tom clearly had many sides to his personality. He could be a nice guy to some people but a serial sexual predator to women. I would be surprised if he were ever released. He has been in and out of prison several times for rape. Based on his history he would be a high risk for commiting additional sexual offenses.

I had occasion to be at KSR on a regular basis in the late 70's and most of the 80's,,If you were out on the "yard" you couldn't miss Payne.Seven feet tall is one thing but he looked like someone from a terminator movie,probably well north of 300 lbs (think a bigger Kevin Nash in his WWE days)

Payne had issues in high school but got away with things because of who he was.He was a serial sex offender before such things were as well publicized as they were later and are today. He raped women in at least 3 states,one such incident taking place on the hood of a car.It is amazing he wasn't shot somewhere along the way.I dealt with offenders all my working life(from serial killers to cold check artists but sex offenders and child molesters are a different breed altogether.Most other crimes I could understand how people got there and to a degree what the got from doing what they did,but the sex offenders(particularly where children were involved) were their own special type of weird.I felt somewhat dirty just interviewing them or gathering evidence and details of the crimes.

Dick Gabriel produced it. It was called something like "Rupp: myth, legend and fact". I think it's all on YouTube in sections.
Tom Payne is a tragic tale. His own fault, but still sad. He got drafted by Atlanta and was soon arrested for rape. I think he served time but got out and played for the "Catbirds". I think he went to Hollywood to try to be an actor and got in trouble again. I don't think he's ever getting out.
One of his UK teammates ministers to him - maybe it was Jim Andrews?

Doc, you are exactly right about the “Terminator” movie analogy. I have never seen a bigger, more muscled human being than the Tom Payne I saw in prison. I also agree with you that sex offenders are rarely if ever “cured” from their compulsions. I’ve represemted several over the years and all of them kept their repeating sexual misconduct.

A lot of it,but no one has seen it all.People keep on thinking up crazy sh!^ and even crazier reasons for doing it. The jobs I've had causes one look at just about everything a little different than most people.If it hadn't been for sports I might be some kind of nut(Some would say sports didn't help all that much)

I'm sure he was nice to you op. I've read quite a bit about Payne. Under no circumstances should he ever be allowed into society.

You're kinda underselling his "personal demons" there.

Let's be blunt, he was a serial rapist who violently raped women in several different states. And he wouldn't stop, when he got out of prison, he went right back to more raping.

False. He was never an All American.

And his pro career merely consisted of less than half a season (only 29 games) before being arrested mid-season in connection to multiple rapes.

Rumors from Maysville back then said Ronnie Lyons and Payne had some problems but it was never verified.

OP thanks for being so civil. You seem to be a honorable man. Yes I remember very well because I was a junior in H S. I'm glad to here this and thanks for posting. Brings back many memories. Thank You

One other thing Denny Crum secured a young forward from Mississippi that coach Hall coveted. Don't know your age, but his mane was Kenny Payne. Take care!

Tom Payne has been in an out of prison multiple times for the same crimes. He's been given chances to change, and the only thing that ever came out of it was more victims. He doesn't deserve to ever be let out again.
