IPAs and all of the other craft beer stuff coming out, I couldn't tell you. There is some kind of brewer's science behind it, but I think most craft beers taste like overhopped garbage and I don't understand the appeal.

A lot of it is. They come out just as hop water with no balance.

IPA's are supposed to be extra hoppy though. They learned that hops act as a natural preservative, so the beers that were on the slow boat to India were hopped with extra hops so it didn't go bad on the voyage ... or at least that the story of how they got their name.

There are a lot of craft beers coming out in all kinds of different styles. A lot of breweries really miss with their IPA attempts in my opinion, but they are doing really cool stuff with other brews. Flying Dog has a rum barrel porter. Basically just a porter but aged in a rum barrel so it absorbs some of that flavor from the barrel.

Sours are getting kind of popular right now. It seems to be a love it or hate it proposition with those.

Saisons are starting to come back as well.

I agree that a lot of it isn't that great, but I do find it interesting to see what people are trying.

Buy and drink Mothman anytime you find it.

Your mention of Mothman reminded me of the time my wife attended a social work convention in Baltimore a few years ago. A group of social worker ladies from the Charleston area walked in wearing Mothman tee shirts. Needless to say.....the West Virginia remarks spread quickly thru the attendees.

Some beers are brewed with fruit in them, or the peels.

I just brewed a Citrus IPA that had both orange and grapefruit peels in it for the boil. (as well as 3 different kinds of hops and it's fan-freakin-tastic ... but I digress)

Sometimes the garnish helps to bring out some of more subtle flavors in the beers. Now, having said that, my basic philosophy is that if you have to put fruit in the glass (or in the bottle as with Corona) to make the beer taste good ... just drink a different damn beer. :)

Beer on tap that's cheep is always best , but if I'm out with a person with money & they are buying, well then old Milwaukee is king ...
The last Old Mil I had, it tasted worse than usual, but it was nearly full and could not throw it away. Before I got half a can down, I was barfing my *** off - really sick. Beer drinking Uncles and the Bar keep told me it was "green", and it is not unusual to get deathly ill on "green" beer - which I had never heard. Have not allowed Old Mil to cross my lips again.
