Time for an important thread needing legit opinions

Last night, had a beer bought for me. A Blue Moon and of course it was garnished with an orange slice. Only second one I have ever have because I'm not much for fruit in beer. I have a very strong opinion and you can probably guess what that is but I don't want to influence legitimate responses.

But can anyone tell me the appeal of putting fruit in a beer?

I like Blue Moon and I like it with a slice of orange. The orange slice accompanies and helps magnify certain flavors within the beer. Corona (which I also like) just tastes better with a lime. I don't know why. Guinness just tastes delicious on it's own.

IPAs and all of the other craft beer stuff coming out, I couldn't tell you. There is some kind of brewer's science behind it, but I think most craft beers taste like overhopped garbage and I don't understand the appeal.

I think lime in a Corona is an improvement. Never had any other beer with fruit in it.

I enjoy a big tanker of Dos Equis with lime here and there when the mood is appropriate. I do despise fruit flavored "beer", such as Lemon Shandy.

Boy, I agree with that. I'm a beer drinker but I'm just a basic guy and not fancy with much of anything including beer. I'm around so many pretentious people that try to impress and they buy all these craft and micro brew beers and some of them taste worse than dog piss. Worse I ever had was in Flagstaff, AZ at a very fun micro-brew/restaurant. They were pushing this IPA as the best in Arizona so I got one. I literally couldn't choke it down and I've drank a lot of rot-gut in my life.

Had a bartender pour me a Black Moon...half Blue Moon and half Guinness. It was actually pretty good.

IPAs are for women and beta males.

back in the day and very common in the places of WV I have some heritage, it is common to put a raw egg in a beer and chug it. I must admit as a juvenile delinquent that I was, buying a dozen eggs and a twelve pack was a fun night out.

Alright, as a home a brewer and a beer snob, I feel I need to respond. Blue Moon is a Belgian White beer (witbier), which is in the wheat beer family, and basically the same as a hefeweizen. Wheat beers lend themselves, due to the simple ingredients (usually just wheat, water, yeast, and hops) to be brewed with different kinds of fruit. Belgian White beers are traditionally brewed with fruit (oranges are typical) and spices like coriander. These wheat beers at the base are lightly hopped and you want to bring out the fruity notes from the ingredients.

Blue Moon is brewed with oranges or orange zest and peels, and thus the reason people "fruit the beer". The orange slice really is just a garnish to bring out the orange undertones. However, I think it's just a gimmick.

I drink a lot of IPA's, stouts, porters, etc.

Bud Draft with shot of Jack on the bottom. Can take Bud Light with salt since early teen. Becks at room temp has the best taste.

I loved Becks & St. Pauli Girls chilled and couldn't tell the difference between the two. They both held up well at room temperature though. I woke up dry once and finished off a warm Strohs. I DON'T recommend it.
I Liked Guinness at room temp.

Re: The Guinness ...on a trip to The Emerald Isle a few years ago, was introduced to it and the Murphys (prefer the latter but to each their own), with a half shot of blackcurrant liqueur or cordial in it...was amazing! I now keep a bottle of it in my bar to give the Stout some zip.
Not really a fan of the wheat beers, or any ale's...they seem to sit in my stomach for hours.
Almost any Amber Lager, Pilsner hits the spot for myself....a Tecate , Dose Equis , or Corona on a hot day...limed for sure...

Is there a Lobata brand brewed in Canada? For some reason that name comes to mind. Old Mil would be top shelf in comparison.

the lime in the corona, which started in Mexico, was to keep the bugs out of the beer bottle...

and if you were ever in a Mexican beer factory, you would never touch that crap especially when you saw where the water came from...

The Cuervo factory tour was nice.

The Heineken brewery was awesome.

The Coors brewery was very nice, went there before Zephyr games for the quick 15-minute drinkfest.

and Blue Moon is awesome with the orange slice.

My boss owns a small craft brewpub in the next town over...I don't have the heart to tell him they are junk though lol....likely not a wise move anyway! There is one here in town built in an old Carriage Works from the 1800's ,excellent Blonde and Red beers...Flies off the shelf in the local beer store too. He is now forced to expand with a satellite brewery it's doing so well...Holds weddings, live theatre shows and music there as well. Great spot on a Friday/Saturday night...

Labatt...and it's largely junk although it seems to be the highest export brand. It was likely the 'Blue' you had...a crappy Pilsner The Frenchies like it too...most mass produced suds here are tasteless. The medium sized brewer's produce some real good stuff, so much so that the majors (Labatt/Molson who is now owned by Coors)are buying them all up like crazy....I do love a good Yeungling when down in WV /PA...usually bring several cases back when down there. I find it a pretty good lighter Amber Lager...

A local cigar bar in town used to offer a drink called "The Pogue" - a shot of Courvoisier topped with Guinness and served in a large snifter. I got one just for the uniqueness of it, but it wasn't bad.

I think Hamilton is the best in the world........but if I am not mistaken Lewis could win both and Rosberg could finish a 2nd and a 3rd and still win the championship. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Bingo, it was Big Timber. Thanks for the tip. I also bought a quart of regualr IPA, I think the regular IPA was Devil Anse IPA by Greenbrier Valley Brewing.

Some beers are brewed with fruit in them, or the peels.

I just brewed a Citrus IPA that had both orange and grapefruit peels in it for the boil. (as well as 3 different kinds of hops and it's fan-freakin-tastic ... but I digress)

Sometimes the garnish helps to bring out some of more subtle flavors in the beers. Now, having said that, my basic philosophy is that if you have to put fruit in the glass (or in the bottle as with Corona) to make the beer taste good ... just drink a different damn beer.
