Can't say I'm surprised he's going. I think he knew his days were short.

I was ready for him to go. His best team was the one he inherited which says a lot about his recruiting. Time for a change.

I like Neal Brown from Troy.

  • Made concrete promises to players about touches, etc. If you don't follow through, you will lose parts of your team. You can't always follow through.
  • Did not get the ball in the hands of Sills in the bowl game. Stupid.
  • Don't get me started on the zone read.
  • Don't get me started on the wildcat.
  • Even with those don't get me started, there was no flow to his playcalling whatsoever. Even at our level, we have sets of plays built off of same formation and motion. You run the early one's to setup the later one's. There is none of that with Holgs.
  • Firing Crook still hasn't sat well with me up through today.
Beyond that, he was a mediocre coach. I can't say I'm sad he's leaving.

As long as the new coach brings in THE, I think we can all agree we are golden.

*** For those that don't know: THE coaches football.

WVU Football needs mental toughness and a coach that instills that into his team. Not sure Holgs ever completely mastered that. Don Nehlan may not have always had the best talent on the field but his teams always came to fight and most times did not beat themselves. Dana leaving will hurt on the scoreboard in shoot out games that you often see in the B12. But what you may see is more emphasis on playing smarter which could offset some of Dana’s offensive prowess. Dana did have a wacky brand which does work in recruiting to some degree. He is known to be a “offensive genius” which is good but running the ball and playing defense still wins a lot of games. Will miss Dana personally...I liked the guy and his staff. Just could not get a defense good enough to match his offenses. Is that on Dana or Tony, probably both.

Personally I like Dana... and I think Dana liked WVU. But I agree that I don't think he was going to be "it" for WVU. He never developed talent like I thought he would, recruiting seemed to be hit and miss and really spent the first few years learning on the job. This was the year he had the perfect chance to win the Big 12.

I fully agree with this perspective.

I think it was clear he wasn’t going to be great @ WVU. Maybe he does much better in Houston with a deeper home state pool of recruits, and cupcakes on the schedule. But I don’t think he’s a big game coach, we never seemed to gameplan well, imo.

I like Brown, but I’m worried about becoming a steppingstone school. I wish there was a football Huggins out there.

Jones, Schiano maybe would stay put if successful?

A bunch of WVU players have already started a twitter campaign to hire Gibby.

I think DH got out while the getting was good. We were relatively loaded this year and still went only 8-4 and didn't make the Big 12 title game and lost to Syracuse...SYRACUSE..in a bowl game. And next year we'll be without our great QB and it would be worse. I think DH is merely an average Head Coach.

I may come off like a curmudgeon here but maybe we can get back to a little more substance and a little less flash in WVU football. Play some defense. Get some run / pass balance. Get rid of the silly uniforms.

Also, in the never ending arms race of better facilities I read we're again lagging and are in the middle of a $50 million fund raising push. I guess that part never ends.

ETA: One good thing about DH though is he got 61 wins at WVU, which puts him ahead of RR. Nice. RR, in case you hadn't heard, is now the Offensive Coordinator at Ole Miss.

Terry Bowden

Had one season at Akron where he wasn't .500 or worse. Sorry, he's a hard pass.

Doc Holiday

Nope. He was damn close to being hired when Rich left. Damn close.... back then EERSFAN and I worked to have an open search performed. That led to us hooking Jimbo, but then Ed and Joe hiring Bill instead. Never liked the idea of Doc as a HC.

Jim Tressel?

Doubtful... Gee was at OSU when he "resigned".

Think about how sad the fact is that two top coaches in NCAA football are natives of this state, and at one point we had one of the hottest young coaches on the sideline (who was also a native, and alumni) who bailed on us. And we had one of the top 3 (?) most winningest coaches in NCAA history on our sideline, which we fired.

Terry and Tommy Bowden were both WVU guys and never coached here.

Feels like a fvckload of missed opportunities

Saban and Jimbo have no WVU loyalty. The Bowden boys could have been good hires in the 90's.

sounds to me like $$$$$ means more to him than winning....at Houston he will never qualify for the playoffs...here he had a modicum of a chance....good riddance....Brown or Fickell come on down

Lord, did you not watch Nehlen football? It was just as bad fundamentally.

If Bear Bryant were alive, I'd support bringing him in. Hell, why don't we just go dig him up?[winking]
I've often said we could dig up Ronald Reagan, plaster some make up on him and he would do a better job than the last 3 presidents

Jimbo was going to be the next head coach after Rich.

Tommy I always preferred over Terry.
I’d love to know how Pastelong screwed things up so badly walking out the door. Just don’t understand the decisions made after the Beilien and Rodriguez hires.

The question was who wouldn’t see WVU as a stepping stone.....not who should take over.

Other than Schiano, none of the others would be on my list, including Tressel

For me:
1) Brown
2) Heupel
3) Leach
4) Fickell
5) Norvell

And every one of them would be constant rumors following a good year, which hurts our program, imo.

This whole process just makes me wish things could have shaken out differently for us in the past.

Maybe Trickett becomes a great coach, and wants to be here in 5-10?

There's a reason why Eddie didn't get the extra years he wanted out of Clements.

Remember when Catlett retired? Huggins should have been hired then as well....

He was ready to walk away from the coach in waiting and the deal got torpedoed.
Interesting but I have a hard time believing it from what I have known. Guess it doesn't matter any longer

Jimbo wasn't going to leave FSU. No idea who or where you got that rumor.

He was. Back then he was still only an OC and had the "in waiting" monkier. The deal had been struck. He was ready to come and at the last minute Eddie pulled the rug out from it. Garrison was livid. Would have fired Eddie on the spot if he could have. Hence, Eddie got his final retirement contract and didn't get to stick around like he wanted to.
