even torbush showed an occassional sign of life but UGA had absolutely no reason at all to suck to the degree they did with all that talent... I'm not an expert on UGA, but I would bet the majority of their defensive players had mulitiple BCS offers.... no way they should suck as bad as they did...

Martinez is not who I would like to see hired, but I am going to give Mullen th ebenefit of teh doubt with whomever he chooses. That being said, didn't Georgia have the #30 Defense in the country? NOt great by Georgia standards, but I wouldn't consider that "sucking so bad." Their offense put the D in some bad situations in the few games I watched them play.

Living in Atlanta I hear all things UGA. Seems like there are 2 things to keep in mind. One is that UGA's offense turned the ball over more than anyone else in the SEC, almost more than anyone else in the Country. That has to hurt the D stats bad. The second is that after high expectations and low output for the last two years someone had to be thrown under the bus. Some UGA fans were calling for Richt's head.

I'm not wowed but maybe with lessons learned and a fresh start, our support staff, maybe we could maintain a top 25 Defense? I've also heard he is a crazy good recruiter. Possibly could bring some top talent with him? Has to be better than Torbush?

He's had to go up against him several times when he was at Florida so if we do get him I would trust the hire.

That being said I don't know if he would be my first choice, but what do I know.

I think this is a fair assessment. He is a good recruiter and a fair coordinator. UGA just sucked this year (by their standards) and Martinez is taking part of the fall. He is not an amazing hire, but I don't think he would be a terrible one either. If he can recruit and Mullen can move the football, then I think he'll do a solid overall job.

He'll easily be better than Torbush.

Your young, fairly inexperienced, and the experience you do have is running the offense. Who do you trust running a defense?

Mullen may very well be very knowledgeable about defensive theory and has preferences on what he wants to see implemented, but the fact is he's never coached it hands on in his life (until this year). He may want to hire somebody he knows he can trust with managing the entire defensive side of the ball. Martinez is a safe hire in that respect. The downside for the fans is that it appears to be a boring hire considering the defenses at UGA got worse under his direction. UGA defenses weren't exactly exciting to watch. On the other hand, hiring somebody like Diaz is the sexy hire since he's young, is developing a name for himself, and his defenses are known for being aggressive. There appears to be more upside. But, the downside is that Diaz could easily get in over his head as he's had little DC experience and comes from the Sun Belt. It could easily backfire when asked to do the same thing in the SEC.

What I don't understand is if why we would have gotten rid of Torbush if we're heavily considering Martinez. To me, Torbush is the same as Martinez. Maybe Mullen just took exception with the Torbush philosophy or maybe Torbush just couldn't stand Mullen. Who knows?

There are so many variables, why did Martinez's Defense look so great in 2007 and so poor in 2008 & 2009. Was it because UGA as a team regressed those year, which they certainly did. Did Richt set the tone for the D by asking them to call plays conservatively?

I do know from my keeping up with UGA that in 2007 they ran the ball a lot more, turned the ball over a lot less, and held time of possession much more than in either 2008 & 2009. That had to affect the D, but that might not be the root cause of a bad Defense.

Maybe it's the best guy we can hire for the $$$, sorry to say that but unless we pony up more cash maybe we can't afford someone better? For what it's worth Manny Diaz is on UGA's shortlist. They are talking about spending 400k +. They'll even go a lot more if they can grab Kirby Smart.

Mullen/Byrne prove to me that they're not capable of making rational decsions, I trust them completely. Hopefully that day never comes.

We wont know how the decision turns out until a year maybe two down the road

Other than diaz being young, having apparent ties to recruiting in the Miami area, and having an aggressive defensive coaching style which half the coordinators in the country have what has he accomplished. I mean yeah they won their conference and a bowl against the art school of miss but what else? Enlighten me as to why he is better than anyone else. I watched our game against MTSU and the new Orleans bowl and that is the only things I have to judge.

I'm saying they were 119th in the country in Turnover Margin! Their offense put a huge amount of pressure on their Defense, and they still managed to be 30th overall in the Country. Their leading rusher averaged 59 yards a game, the 2nd best average 36 yards a game. Take the Kentucky game for instance, they lost that game because Joe Cox threw interception after interception late in the game when they were ahead!!! If they could have run the ball even decently against KENTUCKY (remember 252 from AD) they would have shut that game down. You know their best game was against GaTech, guess what they ran the ball effectively.

Is that an excuse, yeah it is but I'm searching for any silver lining to what looks to be one huge stinky turd.

Trust Dan Mullen with a hire until he screws up? You mean like Carl Torbush? I for one, based on what I've seen, don't trust him on this. The only other defensive coach that Mullen has brought in was Tony Hughes, who was mainly brought in to recruit.

The bottom line- Martinez sucks. People talk about all of the turnovers that Georgia had, well, is that reflected in the stats as far as yards allowed? Because in theory, Georgia turning the ball over should have given teams a shorter field. I really haven't looked it up, so if someone does, I'll be willing to look at it.

As far as Martinez being a scapegoat- he was a scapegoat for a reason.

And like I said, if Martinez is hired, I think we all deserve a pretty good explanation from Mullen, and I don't consider a bunch of coachspeak a good explanation.

This year they gave up 328 yards a game, the previous years they average 302 per the AJC.

I's just looking for a rationale that we are even looking his way, all I have are the stats and the turnover margin. Maybe Coach Mullen has a personal connection with the guy?

that Torbush's defense got a lot better after DM put him on the field after the Auburn disaster....a DC is not the final decison maker for what defenses we run..he is charged with that by the Head Coach and then his job is to deliver what the HC wants.....I like to think Dan Mullen will make sure we are running the defense that will work for us...going to be fun....

Mullen is looking for a way to succeed sooner rather than later. Martinez has extensive experience in the SEC and probably knows the personnel and schemes much better than Diaz would coming in from the Sun Belt. Martinez has been part of a highly successful program. Even though his defense's national rank did slightly decline over his five years, it seems like he would be better equipped for the job assuming he gets in here and recruits his tail off.

I think that Torbush did not like firecracker Dan in his face. Torbush has about 20 years on him and is more old school. I rember watching the Houston game when they were about to score. They showed Torbush in the box and Dan on the field. They showed them yelling back and forth through the headsets. So be it. The buck stops with Mullen and if his DC cannot take it fine. He will be better off in the Big 12 were giving up 24 points a game is ok.
