It may be time for RU to abandone professional sports. Rutgers is selling its soul for big time football money. Players aren’t students, and can’t even read, nobody cares. Unless we are going to be competitive, which we will never be, it’s time to go back to amateurs playing Colgate. I’m afraid that we are being paid to lose, like the Washington Generals!

Tate and Zinn are part of the problem. They are here to sell our souls.

My first reaction was to pile on and call you a troll

but … I get it

as Rutgers fans …. It just endless disappointment and embarrassment…. Endless!!

so it’s entirely reasonable to ask - IMHO - why don’t we FINALLY just give up?

But, be real, that’s never going to happen

so with each additional disappointment and embarrassment- and with college sports being what it is now (professional) - i find myself caring SOOO much less than I used to

a bad RU loss used to ruin my day.

Now? Ehhh

my suggestion - find a RU sports hobby or two (or delve deeper into your non- RU sports related hobbies) cause it’s only gonna get worse in the short term (particularly football)

At least until we get that field house

So many people criticizing bringing back Schiano for his second stint. At the time, Schiano was the only one who could keep NJ athletes home. He was the opposite of Ash. But with NIL, keeping kids home is no longer possible. And we all know he’s not a great head coach. If Rutgers can’t find big money (Miracle), it doesn’t matter what coach they bring in.
I think there are two structural things that make it obvious that Schiano will never succeed in his second stint.

First is the one you mentioned, about how NIL and the portal have completely changed how teams are built and maintained. What were Schiano’s strengths in his first time at Rutgers have been completely neutralized, but one can argue that couldn’t have been predicted when hiring him.

The second thing is that Schiano’s defenses (even in the first stint) always struggled against teams that threw the ball all over the place. Those old enough will remember when his defense against passing teams made backup QBs and statues who could throw like Pike at Cincinnati look like NFL players.

That one is where the hiring process failed. People assumed at least the defense would be good if he was hired, when a sober examination of when he defenses were good and when they weren’t would have led to the conclusion that the game had passed him by.

When did this happen? I was on this board several years before "Pandemonium in Piscataway" and left in late 2019 / early 2020 because I was FIRMLY against rehiring him. Nearly this entire board disagreed with me and I chose to leave before I started to alienate the majority of the board. This "... he is the only one who could..." nonsense is not grounded in any reality and is almost entirely wishful thinking / justification for their opinion. Most of the people on the board "knew" he was also the only one who could win the Big East and get us to a BCS Bowl, which neither happened. The problem here is that RU has always done things on the cheap and hopefully those days are over since we are in the B1G.
Apparently the one thing RU does NOT do on the cheap is pay for all of Greg’s family and friends to be on the most bloated incompetent staff in all of college football. The reason we are grabbing 1-AA players from the portal is because we are paying millions for support staff that I would contend are basically no-show jobs.

No one is hiring Greg Schiano outside of some high school so that offset is irrelevant. That tainted goods now, and really, outside of Rutgers, always was
Greg will never work again in any meaningful job. And good luck to his sons LOL. Anyone that looks at their resumes will recognize that they have ZERO real experience other than working for Daddy in what has become the laughingstock of college athletics.

Great post. I was skeptical but overall pleased when they brought Greg back and the first portal haul was pretty good. The team looked better right away.

But it just hasn’t worked at all.

He can’t be successful in this era and no longer seems to have a nose for talent.

His approach just doesn’t work

Buyout Details

  • Buyout Amount: If fired without cause, his buyout clause equals 76.875% of the remaining contract value.

  • Mitigation Clause: Offset by any future football coaching salary Schiano accepts, though he is not obligated to seek new employment.
"Mitigation Clause: Offset by any future football coaching salary Schiano accepts, though he is not obligated to seek new employment."
When Tampa let him go he sat the first 2 of the 3 years the Bucs were obliged to pay him until Meyer hired him as OSU's co OC (alongside Luke Fickell)

Schiano won't be looking now and unless another OSU like opportunity pops up ,expect him to remain unemployed while collecting his Rutgers buyout checks .

The worst mistake Rutgers made wasn't hiring him back, it was giving him the extension with 4 years remaining in his contract.
His teams seemed to be moving upwards, but a 6-6 regular season isn't the kind extensions are made of .Especially with 4 more years on the contract left and he hadn't done enough for other programs to be looking his way

Schiano has nowhere else to go. There was also no danger of someone poaching him back when Hobbs gave him that ridiculous extension.

All fired coaches show up somewhere because its like a fraternity . Greg could be a DC easily. Belichick got like 16 RU players . Four RU DBs won nine Super Bowl rings with Pats. GS knows how to coach DBs better than most. Flood got good jobs after after a lot of players got arrested and he had a cheating scandal

Five Rutgers players charged, then suspended from football team

People forget we won Pandimondum bc Louisville was offside. We missed the first kick. Most of our wins under Schiano are bc opponent screwed up, not bc we outplayed them.
Shelby’s distaste for Schiano is extreme: 1.0 and 2.0 and every failed football gig in between. He’s been a fraud for 30 years counting his time in Miami with a defense so talented it would have been dominant with 7 players.

But Shelby keeps it real.

Shelby disagrees that the Louisville win was ill-gotten and undeserved. Penalties, poor execution and mistakes are part of the game and the team that makes a critical mistake in a key moment in a loss didn’t outplay the winning team for 60 minutes.

Actually Flood was out of coaching for a year then was hired as an assistant line coach by the Atlanta Falcons ( the reported average salary for NFL assistant position coach at that time was between $300,000 & $500,000)
Kyle stayed there 2 years moving on to be Bama's OL coach in 2019.

I think Greg might have to accept being a DB coach and work his way up the ladder to being a DC if he gets a job with a P-4 program, if Rutgers buys him out..

I would hire Hasiniak at double his salary at UMass which is $1.2 million. He did a great job here with defense; has recruited well at UMass with limited funds and appears to be a good in game manager. That gives Kelli most of the funds to pay off Schiano plus you save whatever we are paying his kids

Can we at least acknowledge that Schiano took us from laughingstock to back to back 7 win seasons before we fell back to laughingstock? I feel like that's not nothing

Who’s this Hasiniak dude ? Sounds more like a traditional holiday dish on the Steppes.

Sure. Acknowledge it but also realize the entire SPORT of CFB is different now than it was even three years ago. Much better coaches than GS have realized they don’t want any part of it going forward and have moved on voluntarily. He should have too after last season.

It may be time to consider dropping down to FCS, maybe then we can field a competitive team. Don't think we will ever be able to compete with the big boy. Just don't make sense to continue to lose $$$ on a pipe dream

I dont believe so, no.

Yes, that was something albeit very short term with a soft schedule those 2 years. He is a disaster as a B1G Coach. His B1G Conference winning percentage will be under 20% after 7 years. Dismissal immediately at any other P4 program.

Maybe it's time for the Athletic Department to start doing things right and be a winner.
Then the it'd too hard crowd might stop asking to sit at the kids table to play.

Northwestern can't be considered a powerhouse and has had a losing record for the last 10 years (59-64) but that didn't stop the Wildcats from building a new stadium and not cry to play easier foes.
Granted Rutgers 40-80 10 year accomplishment isn't anything to brag about
But Indiana wasn't much better the 10 years before this current HC brought them into the limelight, going 49-70.
They didn't whine , cry and carryon because they were losers, thir AD went out and built a winner by hiring a HC that could make the Hoosiers into a top program

RU's AD must start finding the money, like the Hoosier's AD has
Annual and Cumulative Donor Revenues

Schiano - Does he need to be fired or can he be demoted? Is there a role he can fill without having to pay him for doing nothing?
Replacement - If Rutgers continues to hire people without a proven head-coaching record, expect the same for the next decade or more.
Out of the box - Maybe don't replace him. Have the OC and DC co-lead the program until you find a good head coach solution (see above).
NIL - Money is great if used to full advantage. Why pay a transfer quarterback who isn't better than what's already there?
Recruiting - NIL won't make a big difference if the team isn't attractive to recruits. You're spending money without getting the right product.
Recruits - Rutgers had (from what I saw) four 4-star recruits for 2026. I see only 3-stars for next year. Is money really needed for 3-star players?

In fairness, Rutgers has had to compete against teams that regularly get more 4-star recruits and some 5-stars. Michigan had two 5-star and nine 4-star recruits this year. Notre Dame had 2-5-star and 19 4-star. Money alone can't buy that; the program and coaching need to be attractive.

More fairness... Both quarterbacks look adequate and might be better with a better line in front of them. Lonergan's passing looked sharp until things broke down and the pressure was on. I think the same with Surace. They can both pass when given time, but I wish both could run or at least scramble.

Prediction: Rutgers will again hire someone else's assistant on the cheap and hope for the best. While they should not get more than a three year contract, they probably will. I've been watching Rutgers football since the early '70s and saw my first RU game in the late '50s when my older sisters took me to a game. I don't think I will live long enough to see Rutgers significantly better than it has been.

that’s revisionist history ********

on the flip side people can cite various instances where RU got screwed from victories - just off the top of my head there was the pat white non-fumble, the imaginary man down field (forget the game)

On the flip side of your post there were been COUNTLESS bad RU screwups that gifted the opponents victories - where to start with that?

Just stop

We aren’t trying to compete with them. But we can compete with Illinois, NW, UCLA, and whoever else. Like most of college football.
