We’ll never have a top 10 total defense under frost. Get over it. Doesn’t mean we can’t have a top 10 team.
Chin might be bad but I should STFU because I said we don't need ALL AMERICANS to stop illinois better than that?
Ok.

Exactly I don't know why so many are willing to excuse poor defensive play just because our offense is good. Look at Alabama this year. They have a great offense and a great defense. They are exactly what we were in the 90's. It's been done here before! Having an Oregon level defense shouldn't be acceptable here.i don't really see why scott or any other coach would not want a really good defense. having a great offense and a great defense are not mutually exclusive. because we score a lot, we're ok with sucking on defense.....? no, i don't think so.
We're on our way to having the top offense in this league and one of the top in the nation in a year or two.
Frost's philosophy is to win high scoring games with the defense generating turnovers, basically if we get a possession or two more per game than the opposition = win.
It was done at Oregon, replicated at UCF, and is starting to shape up here.
It's a way different philosophy than what has been done here before and is going to be frustrating AF for some.
Not to say that there's no room for improvement. It has a long way to go.
Ohio State has had a suspect defense the last 2 yearsThat philosophy works in leagues like the Pac-12 or AAC where nobody plays any defense. But if you look at the history of the Big Ten, it's usually the teams with the best defenses that prevail in this league.

Not really, if you look at our schedule we played some of the worst offenses in the nation, and then gave up 63 in our first tough game. That is why ppg stats, rushing yards per game, passing yards per game, are misleading. If you play teams with a statue at qb, a team that runs clock, and uses field position and defense to win...your defense is going to look good. If you play Texas Tech you are not going to give up less than 30. If you play 2-3 MAC or Sunbelt teams you will also look better. We played some good offenses this year... obviously we are very thin and challenged physically but we can win our last 2, and that is all we can ask for...2016 was a decent defense.

nfm.

GTFO idiot year one and this team is terrible? Geezus you and fans like you with ridiculous expectations. We have seen years upon years of bad football and year one with this staff you come up with that garbage. Fans like you a team would be better than having no fans at all....Defense starts with tackling no matter the alignment. This team is terrible. That would not be the case under a decent defensive staff. PERIOD
4 different DC’s for some of these kids, two different base sets and now another year of transition. That is not the most favorable environment for a successful defense.
I have heard that argument and it just doesn't wash. There are small differences in what coaches want but overall it comes.down to getting off blocks, getting.to the ball, making plays on the ball.and tackling. The schmes part if it gets you in position to do this things. It doesn't take a defensive genius to see we have serious problems on D. Keep waiting for the perfect players to come along, everyone is saying next year but really who is coming in or up who will.make the difference?
Are you the same dude questioning if Frost could coach earlier in the season?nfm.
I think it will be better. Heck it took a third of the season just to get the kids to buy in.The defense may come around but if the defense remains a huge liability into year 4 it would mean we essentially wasted Adrian Martinez’s years here by not even fielding an average defense.
That would be a crime. Hopefully see marked improvement in year 2
Exactly it doesn't take more than a year for good defensive coordinators to start turning around a defense. The fundamentals that every defense should have and are the first thing that should be worked on and improved are just piss poor right now. It doesn't take more than a year to learn how to tackle. It shouldn't take more than a year to have an idea what the heck you're supposed to be doing. It doesn't take more than a year to learn how to not get blown off the ball every play. We're incredibly bad at playing fundamental defense. These are all things that should already be worked out by fall camp of year 1. Yet these are still huge issues into the 10th game of the season. There is zero improvement from last year.I have heard that argument and it just doesn't wash. We've had plenty of opportunities this year to get some speed on the field and the coaching staff chose not to. It appears they went with experience instead. But it doesn't help when even the experienced guys don't know what they're doing half the time and play poor fundamental football.you have to have a pass rush for this D to work and we don't have one, give it some time when we can get some speed on the field and then it will be complete, until then hope we can outscore the other team
Either way people are delusional if they think some DC can just walk in and over night field a good defense under the circumstances.
I have a feeling we are going to have plenty of Adrian Martinez type players come through here as long as Frost his here, so I wouldn't let that worry you. Hopefully it doesn't take 4 years to figure out the D side of things. I think if D is still struggling 2 years from now, things might need to change a bit.The defense may come around but if the defense remains a huge liability into year 4 it would mean we essentially wasted Adrian Martinez’s years here by not even fielding an average defense.

Yeah I noticed that too. They were in the right spots, just weren't fast enough or strong enough to get the job done. Very rarely does our first guy bring the player down, it always takes additional guys and extra yardage to get them down.Bo had All-americans and couldn't stop teams in his first year...Chin might be bad ultimately but there is no evidence he is bad right now. Even the best defensive coaches struggle their first year when taking over a historically bad defense. Stop overreacting based on the 2009 defense...we are overmatched in most games we play on the defensive side of the ball...guys aren't busting, they know where they are supposed to be, but they can't do what is asked of them. Go back and watch how many times guys were out of position...they weren't...they just got beat by better players. Defensive execution is more related to talent than offensive execution. Tackling a guy coming full speed at you 1 on 1 is much more difficult than catching pass.
You ask and you shall receive Year 1 Defense ranking under Saban was ranked 33rd in Total yards per game and 32nd in total PPG. However their D was pretty good the previous year, 20th in yards per game, and 27 in PPG. So if anything I guess that shows nothing really drastically changes year 1. We were horrible last year and are still horrible this year.People keep comparing our first year defense to Alabama's who's been running the same or similar scheme for years. I wonder what Alabama's defense was ranked in year one under Saban? Also regardless Saban would have had a lot more talent to work with year one than Chin has.
2003, But nice try...the 2002 defense only gave up +30 4 times...Bo in 2008 gave 34 ppg in his power 5 games...the 2002 defense was compared to some of the best teams we have ever had. They were average on both sides of the ball...if they had a dominant offense like the 90s they win 11 games again.Bo 2002

Yes there are some players who've improved quite a bit, namely the cornerbacks and Mo Barry. But there are also players who've regressed, even from last year. Carlos Davis, Freedom, Gifford, and the safeties have all regressed from last year. We are about equal statistically with what we had last year on defense. If some players got better, that means some players must have gotten worse.Zero improvement?
Charles Jackson looking like a legit B10 DB that teams are actually trying not to throw on disagrees with you.
Dicaprio Bootle about to have more pbu's this season than any db in Nebraska history disagrees with you.
6.0 ypp
8 fumble recoveries
10 interceptions
24 sacks
All of those being better than last season with a harder schedule and 3 fewer games thus far disagrees with you.
There is improvement there, but there are also major holes that will take more than one partial year of recruiting and training to fix.
As Tom Herman would say, ""If we all thought that we were going to come in here and in nine months sprinkle some fairy dust on this team and think that we've arrived then we're wrong."Exactly it doesn't take more than a year for good defensive coordinators to start turning around a defense.
