Been to Atl. many, many times from when it hosted SECt. It has cleaned up since- Buckhead bars replaced restaurants and shops.
I think it was mentioned, but Georgia Aquarium is outstanding.

I've lived in Atlanta for 15 years. It's not at all dangerous. I guess if you visit the worst area of town at 3 a.m. and scream obscenities at people...... 99.9 percent of the crime in criminal on criminal and they know each other.

Depends what you like. The Beltline from Piedmont Park with a stop and Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market is a good time. Just walking the streets in midtown you'll find pretty much anything you want. West Midtown is booming. There are plenty of James Beard chefs if you are a foodie. Buckhead if you like everything shiny and new.....

Anyone staying at the Omni Hotel needs to plan on waiting an hour to get your car in the parking decks. Just a heads up.

Never been there. pretty dangerous?

Well, the crime rate is pretty high, and gang activity is one of the highest, but if you send out a hashtag boycotting non criminal citizens and demand a boycott of their association, you should be ok. They have police there to protect you, like in Florida high schools.

You could even use the alternative to self protection, ALICE. Alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evade.

Personally, I'll take my chances with ALICE over all.

I know it’s been mentioned, but I was down there for a conference a few years ago and the Georgia Aquarium is AMAZING!!!

Just worth the trip on its own (conference was pretty lame).

But I’m nuts for fish and fishing. I’m a fly fisherman who would love to come to KY for some trout. Any leads from fellow fly fishermen would be appreciated. I guess PM me if you can? Don’t really know how that works.

We can talk after the tournament when you flame out at some point as always.

Cool.

So Saturday?

Kidding. I think we handle Clemson.

Duke, with their size and whistle will be a real challenge, but my hopes are high.

I'd rather Kansas win it than Duke, but I just don't see Kansas as that type of team. Someone will pick you off

KU fan has the audacity to talk about whistle. Bill Self's whole career accolades are due to a biased whistle.

And the media slurping that average Joe conference because well, after the ACC, they gotta pump someone instead of the SEC. Pac12? Can't. Big10? Can't.

The officials follow suit.

It’s either Clemson or Duke, so root hard for Clemson.

I mean for the final four, of course.

After that, it’s all gravy, especially with this Kansas team. I love them, but there are conditions we have to meet to win.

We have to shoot VERY well from the 3 and Doke has to play serious minutes and play them well for us to beat Duke, let alone whoever we play next.

We are a little better off having Silvio play so many minutes, but not much. He is still pretty lost out there. But he can fill spot minutes.

Hope to see you in the final.

Rock Chalk.

Haha you've already won your national title this year.

Self has dooped you goofs into accepting a conference title as the only standard at Kansas.

I guess if you can't win more than 3 titles in 100 years, might as well accept what you are.

Wow. You are bringing the smack!

Yes. 3 in 100 years. (Not counting Helm’s banners, WHICH I DON’T. I think they should be in a different category like before the leagues comined in pro basketball and football)

Kansas is a Blue Blood with the greatest tradition and history of the sport. The original rules are in the best college basketball venue in the country.

Kentucky has More wins and more legit titles than does KU.

Of course they do. Facts are facts. Kentucky is an historically great program. As is Kansas.

Not here to talk smack. That will get you banned with a quickness on this board. Just here to talk some basketball.

South side is. Then again not much of a reason to go there. The places you’re likely to go are pretty safe. MARTA can be ok depending on where you’re going. Stay in the northern suburbs then taking MARTA is ok.

As for what to do that depends on what you are interested in. I spend most my time hiking or riding bike trails. Atlanta is great for that.

Also lot of brewery’s and wineries in the area.

Never been there. pretty dangerous?

Been to Atlanta a handful of times. Most recently a 4 day stay in the Midtown area around this time last year.

Me and my girlfriend walked around fairly often, even at night. Never really felt physically in harm, but did get bummed on about a dozen times by homeless/less fortunate.

There are definitely some parts of the city that are sketchy as hell, but any large city will have that.

I highly recommend Mary Mac's tea room. Great food and of course, great tea. The Varsity is also a must, just for the experience more than the food itself.

Been in Atlanta since '91. A lot of fear mongering going on in this thread. Atlanta is a world class city so you can find and experience almost anything you want from the very finest 5 star restaurants to international cuisine in the Buford Highway corridor where you find almost anything.
Atlanta is still booming and with that comes the benefit of getting rid of some of the less desirable neighborhoods near downtown. I went to a Falcons game and we left and started walking to the west - something you would NEVER have done 10 years ago. New condos, shops, restaurants, bars..
My wife works downtown and she takes MARTA frequently and yeah, there are people preaching and asking for money from time to time but she's never been harassed and never seen any trouble.
The Georgia Aquarium is amazing and is the largest in the world. World of Coca Cola and College Football Hall of Fame are also in the area around Centennial Park. The Varsity near Georgia Tech is legendary and an experience. My uncle went to Tech in the late 50s and I remember him talking about it after I moved to Atlanta.
For foodies, just Google and read reviews - SO many choices.

As another poster noted, the Midtown area is full of restaurants/bars/shops and is plenty safe to walk around. Piedmont Park is an amazing place to grab a cup of coffee and take a good stroll in the mornings. And if you want a good burger/bar food, check out the Vortex Bar & Grill.

If anyone is into craft beer, I highly suggest checking out New Realm Brewery. It's a new brewery opened by Mitch Steele, the original brewer at Stone who left a few years ago to start up New Realm. I'm guessing most anything you have there will be fantastic.

Last, I'll echo those who mentioned the Georgia Aquarium. The Mrs. and I love traveling and it's one of the better aquariums we've been to. Fun spot to spend a few hours before the drinking ensues.

If you enjoy Civil war history, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield park, also Picketts Mill battlefield. Both are north of Atlanta. Kennesaw is right off 75. The battle sites closer into downtown were paved over long ago. The famous Battle of Atlanta cyclorama in Grant Park is undergoing restoration and will not open again till next year.

Yeah, you can eat at an Applebees. LISTEN, it is not dangerous in midtown or downtown at all. MARTA is not dangerous. You are more likely to get hurt by a stray hunter's bullet in Kentucky than you are walking the streets of Atlanta.

If you are there Friday and have the day off, check out the MLK, Jr. center. It is operated by the National Park Service. It is just west of Inman Park. You can also tour the house where he was born.

The Jimmy Carter Library is in Inman Park, just east of downtown.

Oakland Cemtetery is a neat place to visit. A lot of famous people buried there.

Two good restaurants, Daddy D’z barbecue and Six Feet Under, are nearby.

Yeah man. I have lived in El Paso Tx. Cincinnati, Chicago, and currently in Raleigh NC . All same.

Homeless are everywhere, and getting worse.

From what I can gather, cities will occasionally raise funds and offer bus fare to homeless to get them to leave.

There was a rumor when I lived in Charlotte that the city of Greenville (SC) had paid bus fare to Charlotte for a bunch of homeless people. (Downtown Greenville has a lot of family events on summer weekends. Homeless people detract from the charm of downtown).

I spent a week in Dallas last July. Lived there and worked in downtown from 2000-2005. The volume of homeless had easily tripled since then.

Here's what you need to do to have the best time. Stay in midtown between 14th street and 8th street close to Piedmont Park. Spend your free time wondering midtown and exploring the eastside beltline trail. Marta to the game from either the 10th street station or the North Ave. station... There is tons more to do but if I only had a few days in Atlanta this is the best experience.

[QUOTE="kywildcatsfannumber1, post: 6770173, member: 128I had the same one approach in SA 3 times with the same story about just getting out of the penitentiary.[/QUOTE]

A homeless guy in downtown Jackson, MS approached me and told me had AIDS.

Not a good opening line.

Wow. definitely not a good look. Stand more of a chance if you say you're hungry or it's for your kids. I've actually had someone come to me begging for food rather than money in SA which I had helped him out. Much rather buy one food than hand money over for who knows what all they might intend to use it for..

I took MARTA all the way from the airport to the end of the line at Doraville yesterday. Didn't see anyone or anything unusual or threatening at all.
