Things That Starkville Needs

1. More options for some night life scenes
2. Outdoor seating at more bars/restaurants
3. Some type of outdoor concert venue that can bring in bigger artists and bring in more people
4. Here in northwest Arkansas they’ve built 2 different high rise type trampoline parks and those places stay full of kids.
5. More microbreweries (there are about 15-20 up here it seems like and they’re all very popular spots)
6. Better trails/sidewalks for bike riders

Im only able to make it into Starkville once or twice a year and I’ve been doing that for the last decade or so and the changes I’ve seen every time I come back are really incredible. It probably doesn’t seem like much to the people that live there since you see it all everyday but there have been some drastic changes that make Starkville much better than it used to be. My Arkansas friends comment on the differences every time I bring them down. The baseball/park complex coming is a huge step I think.

Referring back to my original post in this thread, 1,2 and 4 would be perfect additions to Cornerstone Park.

I use to go camping on the Allegheny River in PA as a kid and the camp ground had a star show at night in the camp ground. This would be a cool idea for the refuge or county lake area. I think if there was a public bus that went to the refuge and they somehow promoted a camping week with a night star show that would be pretty cool.

You think Delta should commit to landing triple 7's with routes to ATL, DFW and LAX so 4 people a week can book seats?

Yea, but not every town has a research university doing $250m plus in research

Pretty much every small to medium size town in America suffers from brain drain, Chattanooga being an exception.

That is funded by external groups. The expertise MSU has in unmanned systems, agriculture, engineering and other fields make it a magnet for private sector to locate R&D type jobs in GTR. Need to continue to improve the quality of life in Starkville to make that part for the private sector comfortable enough to make the investment.

ETA: To put in perspective, MSU receives more external research funding than Auburn and Alabama combined.

If you attend Starkville Public Schools and your child chooses to pursue a quality education while there, she/he will receive it.

I'm not trying to down the schools, but if you are an up-and-coming young professional with a family and you look up the school ratings for Starkville / Oktibbeha County, it's a negative. I know there are a lot of good things going on, and that it's getting better.

That's kinda the point. The number of flights and destinations currently is about right.
****Eta: responded to wrong post....meant one about schools****

20 years from now I think this whole issue will be moot. People are waking up to better ways to educate, including homeschooling and better private schools. The ‘necessity’ of public schools is decreasing.

That said I realize it’s very much a perception thing at present, especially in small towns. A symbol of unity or involvement or whatever.

Put the dude to use in the summer and get an independent baseball team. These leagues usually start in mid may and could work around the bulldogs schedule/play road games in that time period.

Dude i love the GTR. But GTR and NWA are not comparable. NWA has 500k people and is the base for 3 Fortune 500 companies.

First thing that needs to happen is Mole Cricket removal. That's why we can't have nice stuff.

As much as I loathe this particular government intrusion, this would make the biggest difference the fastest.

Starkville needs to stop building so many apartment/condo complexes. They don't stay new forever, and when students don't want to live there they can go downhill fast. However, I think Stakville's fate in this area is already sealed. There are already too many.

If you could somehow combine all of those things into some sort of Mid-City Lanes meets Checkpoint Charlie's kind of thing

then you'd really be onto something.
Of course, you might have to initially propose building a combo check-cashing quick lube car wash just to make sure it'd get approved, then alter your plan.

without MSU, Starkville is a crap hole.

Seems some of them, don't get it.

This is Straight Up!

I would also argue, a city council that doesn't surrender city raised taxes to MSU. Let MSU spend their own money. The city needs better schools, better roads, better parks.

Well for starters

you remove close to 20,000 people.
Faculity...
You don't need motels, rental housing, restaurants, etc. etc.

Revamped ordinances and an architectural review committee that’s not afraid to piss some folks off.

Yes. I'm glad that new development is going up at the corner of Montgomery and University/Main but it's ugly as sin. Whoever approved that dirty yellow brick color along the bottom of the buildings needs to have their eyes checked.

Rich nice homes surrounding downtown instead of the slum looking apartments and government housing that surrounds most of it. There are some nice homes near there but there are plenty of junky shacks as well. Most of the rich alumni moving back seem to want to live in the county or on the south edge of town. I don’t know how you change it, but some developer needs to go door to door cutting checks for property.

I always say, I would design a 1-2 million dollar homes all day long, if people want it. I never get a call about it though.

Just in case Mississippi needs something to feel good about, the MS Lions All-State Band will be going for their SEVENTH consecutive international championship this year in Italy.

https://www.misslionsband.org/

I've seen what this group of Mississippi kids churns out year after year, and I can attest that they bring it every time. No one else comes close. They have a reputation not only within the US, but across the globe.

New movie theater is a must. Hadn't thought about that. Ours is very unimpressive.

There are plans for this and the numbers warrant a new route, but pilot shortage has hindered it becoming reality.

What do you want to land out there? What do you think football teams fly on? When our football team flies its almost always on a Southwest 737. How much more runway do you want?
Granted we need an airline flying West and twice my wife or I have flown out of there recently and been told it was coming soon but your length of runway comment holds no validity whatsoever.

Target
Sams or Costco
Toyota Dealership
Panera Bread
Steak and Shake
A good catfish place (like Moss Creek in Pearl)
A high end steak house
A brewery like this
An amphitheater

Vehicle presence sensors at traffic lights.
A larger housing development with homes in the $250k-$350k range.
A public school board that brings the district up to par with the best in the state.
