These wildfires in the west

I’m far from a forestry expert but can climate change really be blamed? I just watched a piece in NBC news where they and Gov Newsome trying to blame it on climate change.

I remember seeing some comments maybe a year or 2 ago talking about how CA does a terrible job of managing their forest and it leads to more fires.

Curious what some of y’all in the industry think is the cause.

These areas in California get very little rain. Has that changed in recent history?

It’s dry as **** out there. It’s a recipe for a “fire disaster”.

They need proper land management and not just in forests.

2 things...and this comes from friends of mine that live out there and are smothered in smoke right now.

They had two wet summers in the last few years and that has really made the undergrowth and vegetation just explode and then you get a dry year and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Which leads to the next point. The Bureau of Land management has done an absolutely horrible job of managing for wildfires and also the state of California and other western states really have clamped down on prescribed burning and just using old methods of keeping brush and undergrowth under control. It’s just asking for trouble with how they’ve managed the forests out there.

Given that many of the tree species evolved over millions of years to require forest fires to naturally reproduce, I would say blaming the fires on climate change is incorrect.

Until they allow controlled burns to get rid of what is basically jet fuel for wildfires then this going to happen year after year. But politicians can’t fundraise on that, much better for their coffers to let it burn, to hell with the poor people caught in between.

Donald Trump hates vegetation. Biden and Harris will be way better at vegetation related topics.

Much better at fire fighting I’m sure.

I’m almost positive trump set the fires on purpose. He also stopped all of the rain and created the potential for all of the dead “fuel”. Been busy these last 4 years.

Did all that while conspiring with CHI NA on the Wuhan flu.

They don’t do prescribed burns or cut fire lanes in their Forrest due to all the tree hugging idiots raising hell. If MS managed it’s Forrest this way we would have big fire issues also.

One of the fires was started by pyrotechnics from a gender reveal party. No ****. You read that right.

So I guess you can blame the Boomers for destroying the climate and the Millennials for starting some silly **** like gender reveal parties.... We Xers probably should take some responsibility or at least care, but whatever man...

They never controlled burn. Dry as hell. Fuel builds eternally. And when there is a spark, this is what you get.

Mismanagement/liberal agenda is by far the largest contributing factor. Also that they put these things out with absolute maximum effort in all directions rather than run the uninhabited direction which would prevent future problems for a couple of years

“Gender Reveal Pyrotechnics” is probably too long to copyright as a band name, but I could totally get behind it as a debut album title.

This for sure. They pretty much don't allow controlled burns because it's not natural. What they are getting now are natural wildfires. Some may be set by arsonists, but it would have eventually happened anyway.

Not “natural” but Native Americans had used it to keep California wildfires in check for x years before we had to reinvent the wheel over there.

Climate change is real. But poor forest management is a lot more to blame than climate change and it’s not even close.

I have worked a prescribed burn before. It's very stressful. And that's in the cool, damp southeast, with flat lands and moisture everywhere.. I can't imagine how tough it

Having worked in the Western timber world, I have had the privilege of spending time as a tourist in the logging operations and timber management programs. Forestry in the Pacific Northwest is the big leagues compared to the single a ball in the land of Loblolly pines in the south. If you need proof, look up the helitorch.... That's how you prescribe burn in the show.

Everyone is right, regulation hurts, but the vast majority of wildfires are man made. Literally. 85% are caused by humans with our incompetence. Yet another toll or the rona... An extra 40 million idiots out camping for the first time and head home 3 hours after sundown without putting the fire out.

Two hurricanes in the Gulf, massive wildfires out West and an international agreement in place to help mitigate the impacts of climate change, yet we still have people wondering “is it real”.

You think this wildfire has something to do with climate change?

Or hurricanes?

None of those things are remotely new.

Anyone who thinks they can stop climate change is a fool.
The climate will be changing a million years from now.

The climate has always been dry in California. then throw in about 40 million people. Terrible land management. And then idiots that like to throw cigarette butts or play with pyrotechnics in dry area and there you go. And as another poster said you get two wet summers creating under growth then the dry hit them with no under growth management. I was it in San Diego two years ago chatting up one of wild fire management chiefs for one the state offices and he deceived it as just a bad thing waiting to happen with just the way the climate, population, policies were in California. Wild fire there is nothing new. Gov Newsom is just hopping on the green deal with his other buddies. I work in a very climate aware field so I'm not completely denying impacts the human population has in the situation but wildfires aren't simply happening just because of climate change itself.

Waiting for a comment from the liberal professor in Fla

You know the one who said Texas deserves the hurricane because they voted for Trump!

If you’re talking about the Paris climate agreement then just stop right there. That agreement is so useless when you look at the details. Also climate change is very real and also very uncontrollable. If all humans just disappeared today, it would take years for the global temps to slightly respond, that’s how far in hole we are. Throwing money at a problem we can’t fix ourselves is asinine.

And don’t start with the hurricane ********. They knew from the beginning of the spring that this was going to be a very active season like 2005.

One of the major reasons I don’t build a fire when camping, even in the wet east there is just so much risk if you let your guard down.
