Could be complete BS but here's what I just heard at 9:05 CST. They're thinking the religious leaders' statements whipped up enough votes to go to a vote on Thursday or Friday. If that works, they're going to use the bicentennial banner w/ just the state seal and release four flag options for a vote in November. Two will be the Stennis and Magnolia flags w/ other two created by students from State/OM/USM/JSU/etc. Take that for what it's worth. Call your representatives ASAP and tell them it's time to change the damn flag.

I hope that you are correct, but I don't trust good ole boy Mississippi politics. Neither chamber had the necessary votes for the required 2/3 threshold late this morning, so assuming you are correct either a lot of votes have flipped in the legislature in the last 10 hours or some powerful folks fired warning shots at Tater.

Funny we have good ole boys making promises to leave it to a vote in election to get elected. Yep that’s what even our governor said. Theyknew this **** was a problem said what he needed to get elected and now crapping there pants.
Problem is I’ll probably vote for them because there opposition will definitely show their true colors while these guys will vote to change but several still showed theirs as politicians.

We're to the point that any politician who continues to resist a change is going to go down on the wrong side of history when the change does happen and do serious damage to their political career and legacy.

A lot of very powerful and influential people have come out publicly calling for a change since this morning. Politicians are risking their future if they continue to block this.

Please God let this be true. I couldn’t care less what the new flag looks like, as long as the current one is in a museum by Saturday.

If by the "magnolia flag" you mean the secession flag of 1861, that would be an absolute shitshow.

Imagine ... we take down the current flag, the boycotts/punishments end, and then in November they all start back up, only we're stuck with it long-term because we voted the flag out there.

There's no need to put it up to a vote. A few are cool and iconic, but most state flags are awful. As long as it's not blatantly racist or glorifying the Confederacy/atrocities, there's no reason for anyone who lives in America to get worked up about not liking their state flag, because almost everyone else's is boring too, or at least vexillologically bad.

Most are bad. The Stennis flag would be fine. Just putting the seal up on a blue background would be pretty typical. End it this week. Don't drag it out to November and for godsakes don't give the possibility of putting up a different Confederate flag!

With 4 choices, the supporters of the current flag will all rally around the Magnolia because it's another confederate flag, just not quite so obvious, and it won't even take a majority to win. The fix would be in. Don't let that happen!

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable solution. Get rid of the current flag, put a temporary one in place, then fight it out in November.

BTW, Walmart will stop displaying the current flag in its stores.

I hope it happens this week. It’s the morally right thing to do. So many want to change it, but a larger number of people than I was expecting are clinging to a symbol with a hateful past. I have a friend that’s a Republican legislator who supports changing the flag. He told me earlier that he got two death threats today. Insanity.

I like it.

I wonder how that will work though. Does the winning flag need a majority like in a normal election? Or will a plurality do?

If we change it, I still like my idea although the one with all of the mascots represented should be considered.

I'd really like this. Similar to what I was thinking, except I was thinking 20 smaller stars to represent Mississippi being the 20th state admitted to the United States, and perhaps something like, "Father of Rivers", given MIssissippi is Native American (Algonkian) for Father of Rivers.

The 20 stars is one of the things I didn't like about the Stennis flag. These stars represent the flags that have flown over Mississippi. 1. French 2. Spanish 3. British 4. West Florida 5. C.S.A. 6. U.S.A. 7. Previous state flags. You could do away with #7 but it looks better with 7 stars instead of 6. Also, Shotgun mentioned the colors. What if you turn the blue to green representing the fertile land and the red to blue representing the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico?

I haven't seen the Stennis flag, but flags are often based on significant facts. We were the 20th state, making 20 a relevant number. No way you could explain 7 if one of them acknowledges the CSA. Any other number seems too random, begging questions for which there is no answer other than, "it looks cool".

I'd avoid the green for fertile land and blue for water because those are not at all unique to Mississippi, so why make them a central feature? Red, white & blue because we are a member of the USA & those are our country's colors. Magnolia because it is our state flower and a thing we are known for that is not perceived as a negative (unless you have grown one in your yard). A slogan that again ties to our state (Father of Rivers), though I would not be opposed to using the state motto as you have suggested.

Other things I have considered is something on the flag that represents our Native American heritage...perhaps a symbol depicting peace or something like that, especially if it is relevant to the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Biloxi & Tupelo tribes, the 4 most prominent in our state's/territory's history.

Any flag up for discussion should follow the basic principles of flag design: http://nava.org/good-flag-bad-flag/

Any flag with words should be immediately discarded. The Stennis Flag isn't my favorite design, but it's good enough. I fear any attempt to improve upon it will only result in something worse, like the dreaded "seal on a bedsheet."

I know it's the state motto but there was also a very good Civil War novel with that title written by James Street about the Vicksburg campaigns. Have you read it?

James Street wrote many good novels about Mississippi.

I hear.... In God We Trust (Probably the State Seal) is going to be on a new flag.

Hopefully that doesn't offend some.

If that ends up being the ONLY way enough legislators get on board we would need to take it, if Democrats also vote for it.. I know this past decade, Dems have proposed that as a compromise but it has died in committee.

Don’t necessarily agree it would ever get the same level of outcry / protests/ boycotts. We have the GA flag, and the Jim Crow era flags of AL and FL as real life examples.

I agree a new design would be best though. If going through all this trouble, choose one with zero chance of controversy.

Words or seals don't belong on a flag. And the stars literally don't mean anything if you had to add a "previous state flags" just because "7 stars looks better than 6."

I think GA, AL and FL flags may be on the chopping block at some point. We need a clean break so we're not going through this same thing again next year, or in 5 years, or in 20 years.

If you are wondering why all of a sudden the Churches have jumped in the fray wanting the flag to be changed it is because the progressives are "Promising" them that the new flag will have "In God We Trust" on it. This is obliviously a lie. They might propose it only to snatch it away at the eleventh hour. The progs are pulling every political move in the book to try and get our legislators to vote to suspend the rules for the flag vote.

Since you left out Tenn and Texas, your opinion is invalidated. Plus you put Hawaii’s on that list! You might as well put Maryland’s as your favorite. Not only does it have the Union Jack (was that a middle finger to the US for taking it over?), but it looks like a bed spread from Pottery Barn Kids.***
I think Indiana’s is nice except it’s as busy as the Stennis...uh...Hospitality flag. I think the 20 stars for acceptance into the Union is a little weird given the Civil War. That’s like celebrating 40 years wedding bliss when a couple spent 4 years separated on 3 different occasions.

I think GA, AL and FL flags may be on the chopping block at some point. We need a clean break so we're not going through this same thing again next year, or in 5 years, or in 20 years.

If I was involved in the flag design process, I would print out pictures of every known flag associated with the Confederacy, give them to the artist, and say make it look nothing like any of these.

We definitely do not need to pull a Georgia and end up in this same place 10-20 years down the road. Mississippi has much more to celebrate than a lost cause from 160 years ago. Make sure a new flag has no references or allusions to the Confederacy whatsoever.

Vast majority of the African American democratic base in Mississippi is Christian and would probably have no issues with that trade. You overestimate the influence ‘progs’ have here in MS. If the piss yellow license plate design is the only way Tate will accept a new flag, so be it. It is established Court precedent that “In God we Trust” is a national motto, not a religious endorsement, so any complaints by ‘progs’ (I am one) would not go anywhere.

I hear.... In God We Trust (Probably the State Seal) is going to be on a new flag.

Hopefully that doesn't offend some.

I mean, it will. But Mississippi probably has the lowest percentage of atheists in the U.S., so no one will care about them.

I'd never embrace a seal flag, but whatever. I don't live in the state anymore, anyway. Just change it.

Wikipedia say 14 percent which is 49th (Louisiana and Alabama are 50th and 51st; Washington DC is 19th) & it looks like Mississippi has had the highest percentage increase of atheists (or nones) from the previous survey.
