Zap,

respectfully.

you are blaming Pike.....what is he doing wrong? What could he be doing differently?

should he change rotations? he has
Should he sub out all 5? He has
Should he sit our best players for stretches? He has
dis He change defenses? Yes
Did he go full court press? Yes
Had to be addressed from day one after watching sub-par defense against Sacred Heart.
To late now

I can't help but feel that something has changed dramatically within the program that we're not aware of- whether it's chemistry between some players or newly assigned responsibilities on the coaching staff that are not working, I just don't know. This slide and the way it is happening is just plain odd.
I agree, something is amiss, possibly intangible and unexplainable

It really brings home how much this team fed off the crowd. Perhaps early in the season the team thought the paper cutouts were actually fans.

This. Do people already forget we dug ourselves a few huge holes last year that we were able to climb out of (and still a few on the road that we weren't able to overcome)? Remember it still took buzzer beaters to beat lowly Nebraska and Northwestern at home (yes I realize NW is improved THIS season). Last night looked like one of those games except we were a few stops short in the final minutes to actually pull it out. 2019-2020 was a fun season and yes we would have been selected for the tournament, but we were far from a great team. I thought we had improved when we beat Illinois and Purdue this season but I guess I was wrong. Same warts are showing in a big way. I chalked it up to our level of competition at first as OSU, MSU, Iowa, Wisky are all very strong teams. But after last night I know it runs deeper now.

Could it be as simple as multiple guys are out of shape, and especially those who were out due to injury ?

That explains RHJ and Baker getting beat, not hustling and only having gas in the tank for infrequent spurts ? Can’t sit these guys too much otherwise we’ve got Young and a jv team.

Defense is effort. It’s not there for whatever reason.

Defense AND Rebounding are effort. It's not there. We could probably get away with the remedial offense if the effort was there. It's a good thing people aren't paying for seats this year because I'm sure we'd be hearing some boos and that's never a good look in a college atmosphere. Then again, if there were fans, perhaps the team would give the effort.

Of course it was addressed....what can he do differently?

Looking back on things the inflection point was Illinois, a game we won.

You can theorize that the unbelievable outside shooting could have created a false sense that defensive wasn't needed.

Thru the Maryland game we were 5 for 5 keeping opponents under 1.00 points perposseassion. Since then we are 1 for 8. Numbers above not adjusted for opponent.

Our Purdue and Illinois wins were "fool's gold wins"

We gave up 88 points in 73 possessions vs. Illinois
We gave up 76 points in 64 possessions vs. Purdue

This is the same team I’ve been watching for two years minus one forward?
The entire board told me Cliff was better than Shaq defensively.
What changed?

It is the exact same team.

The explanation I don't have for you. I have guesses, but they are guesses.

He should play Harper and Young 35 mpg.

Cut Geo’s minutes.

Only rotate 7/8 with the 8th man getting barely any minutes.

Avoid playing Paul and Geo together when possible.

Aim to have at least one of Young or Montez on the floor at all times.

True colors are shining through. Amazingly hot shooting gave way to losing games at home . The home crowd took this team to a completely different level.

Since no logical explanation can be assertained, and we’ve exhausted conversation on rotations, Covid, coaching, effort and everything in between.
Perhaps it is the crowd, I know ive thought of it before, but figured same for everyone you get used to playing in an empty gym.
But this really is mind freeing.
I feel like a ten ton weight was just taken off my shoulders...search no more for answers.
I’m serious, we need our crowd it’s just that simple and as good an explanation as any!
Naturally, the confidence we get from the home crowd carries over to the road.

Somebody do a wins over expectation analysis the last 4 years (heck the last 10) based on sellouts vs non sellouts vs road games (or by percent of attendance filled) and see what the numbers spit out.

I think Young could be hurt or is hitting a wall. He played a lot of minutes early on and he plays with intensity on both sides.
The energizer bunny looks like his battery is on 75%.

This occurred to me today as well as I was teaching my sport psychology class. We were discussing “optimal arousal” and how external energy (the crowd) is one way to overcome low arousal. Some players (in general) even know how to feed off of the hostility of opposing crowds on the road.
