Step 1: Enter season highly ranked with Final 4 and National Championship aspirations (CHECK)
Step 2: Lose first highly ranked matchup of the season (Usually Duke, Michigan State, this season Gonzaga) and potentially get upset by a non-ranked team (CHECK)
Step 3: Continue to play lifeless basketball through November and early December (CHECK)
Step 4: Beat highly ranked opponent in December/January, team is starting to look decent (CHECK)
Step 5: Win some tough games against ranked SEC teams (rarely are the wins against Tennessee), lose some away SEC games to terrible teams, but overall team is looking decent to good for March (YOU ARE HERE)
Step 6: Enter March Madness with legitimate Final 4 hopes
Step 7: Lose to a lower ranked seed in a game where the offense looks terrible
Step 8: Lose at least half the team to the NBA
Step 9: Repeat!
Good stuff.

The TENN bit in step 5 was off this time around.

And there certainly aren’t high hopes unless one is a Cal nut hugger - so step 6 is off.

Step 7 will happen if we play a lower seed.

Step 8 will not happen because our roster barely has any pros.

If you charted the highs and lows of this season, it would resemble one of those crypto coins on the verge of a crash. You hope it doesn't, but are fully aware that it can.

And UK will probably be preseason ranked in the top 4 next season like all of the past seasons. Why? Because on paper, UK always looks stacked compared to the rest of the field. It never matters they never actually play to the level of the expectation, but every year, it is hard to ignore how good Cal teams look on paper.

Happy Monday Folks, reviving this thread to see if Cal can break the cycle this year. As we started out ranked low, step one is already partly wrong, but I would argue there are still final 4, national title hopes. Can we beat Kansas tomorrow?

Think we are like 2nd or 3rd best odds for NC in Vegas.
