Rumor has it aTUFan will only go to a Kid Rock or Ted Nugent concert...
Your thoughts echoed mine for noble.

I'd just like to be a fly on the wall if his wife got an amusing hair up her a**, and insisted he go see Hamilton.

The 'argument' would be comedy gold.

Bono had moments of political clarity early in his career. (Rattle and Hum’s Sunday Bloody Sunday performance for example) Since then it’s become him being political just to be political. It’s still a waste to walk out of their show though. You know what you’re getting when you go to their show. I wouldn’t walk out of a country concert just because they said something stupid.
Son, I don’t know what version of Rattle and Hum you’ve got, but the one I bought at Peaches on 51st Street the day it came out doesn’t have Sunday on it. The studio version is on War and the version at Red Rocks is not a rebel song.

And they were political 5 years before that when I saw them with about 500 other people at the Brady. Leave the old U2 nostalgia to the olds.

That said, they are too old to do the Super Bowl and incredibly, not commercial enough.

I'd be interested to know what you consider "political". Call for humane treatment of people? Calls for social justice and racial equality? Calls for people to actually live out their Christian/Catholic values vs just proclaiming them for the world to hear? Anytime I've seen them in concert, these are about the only topics they cover or bring attention to. I'm not sure when any of those became political because shouldn't we all be striving for a world that treats everyone equally and justly? And it's the same for the right when they call for actors/directors/entertainers to "stay in their lane"...why shouldn't people who have a following and a platform use them to try to make the world better?
Bono is a blow-hard. Most libs are.

I’ve read through these posts and am surprised that many don’t realize that they’ve already done the Super Bowl.

I hope you had a chance to catch them on the Joshua Tree tour. That one was much better than Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience.

I’m surprised you were shopping at Peaches when Starship was right there at 11th & Delaware.

They can use their platform all they want.. i can use my feet and walk out.. i dont pay to be preached at.. i pay to be entertained..

Shut up and sing.
Much of the best art is designed to challenge and make people think.

I am not a particularly politically active person but would think it a real shame if art descended into the non controversial. Very boring. I include music here of course too.

Whats funny is everyone thinks that my problem is the art/music... furthest from.. my problem comes from the monologues between songs when the artist spends 2 songs wotth of time railing about some issue... a simple " i wrote this song about.." would suffice for those that like the music but didnt read the liner notes..

Rattle and Hum the black and white concert film, not the associated album which was recorded (partially) during the same tour. This night was actually in Denver but it was in the Micnichols sports arena.

What was special about this is that there could have been real life and death repercussions for what Bono was saying regarding the IRA. It wasn’t just a political statement said with nothing behind it. He was to some degree sticking his neck on the line because he was fed up. (He comments on the tragedy and the Irish running away to America at the beginning and makes his statement on it mid-song)

At that time, at least in Ireland, that’s what they were considered. Gloria is all about thinking of women as God and thinking of God in a sexualized sense.

Funny you mention that. Back then Starship was weird. They would have stuff a day or two early and other stuff a day or two late. Always $6.99, before going down to $5.99 31 days later lol. They didn’t have Rattle on CD, so I drove down to the Egg Roll Express just north of Peaches, had an early lunch and bought that and a Suicidal Tendencies CD. I was back in Starship a few days later. I bought Danzig (Mmmmuuuuuuithhhha!) and a replacement Cult Electric CD that got borrowed to the Lambda Chi house and never returned. Copied them all onto tape for a road trip a few days later. Remember it like yesterday. Rader was new and went 4-7 but we were excited. Good times. No cares.

Peaches is where you went to get a fancy case for your cassettes. Starship and Sound Warehouse is where you went to get the goods to fill it with.

The night U2 played the Brady, the rest of us were at the Pavillion with ZZ Top. That one was a much bigger deal at the time.
I was too cool for that. I was bummed it was in summer and I couldn’t show off my tshirt the next at school to kids who didnt know who they were. They probably have all taken their kids to see them now.

I remember this like yesterday, but can’t find my damn keys.

The Cult Electric.

One of those rare albums where every track was great.

A lot of people will question my judgment, but that show and one a year later at the Brady were two of the best concerts I have ever seen.

That other show - Adam Ant. I think it was better than U2. And my ears were ringing for days after the show as I wandered around the lower level of brand new Keplinger Hall. Stage left seats right in front of the amp stacks.

Was that the night he took a swim on the stage. You don’t see that too often.

Romantics were the opener. KMOD kite flight at Bell’s that afternoon. That was a good day.

You sat through Hamilton, but popped off the U2 show because Bono went on for a minute or three bout politics? Thats funny.

One show had talent, the other was boring.

After pulling his wife out of the U2 concert, she probably gave him the ultimatum about doing that sort of thing again.

You miss the point of the art in Hamilton which was taking a pretty damn boring biography of one of the Founding Fathers who wasn't President, telling the story in a unique way and then using hip hop as the delivery method. It was unique and way outside the box for what musical theater had been thought to be. It simply did not follow any of the conventions of traditional musical theater. The fact that the show used a large majority of minority actors to portray men who owned slaves and where the power struggle of the day was between rich white guys and the King of England who was the only major character played by a white actor (who is brilliant BTW), should not be lost on anyone as it was an intentional message.

My wife agrees with you on Cats. She thinks it's weird to watch these people in crazy costumes sing and dance about the different types of personalities cats have when really you could just write one song about how actual cats just want to end your life (she's not a cat person at all). Personally, I think all theater has value but you have to connect with it and understand the perspective of where the writer is coming from. Usually the music draws us in but there are subtleties you may not pick up seeing a show for the first time. The ending of Hamilton when his wife is summarizing his life and all the things he didn't get to...you've got to see it 2-3 times. The Disney+ version allows people a bit closer to see the emotion on her face and it's simply brilliant. You also get to see the torment of Aaron Burr who will stop at nothing to get to the top and all he hits are these Hamilton roadblocks knowing he is not and can never be as principled or as smart as Hamilton is. (This is similar to the scene in Les Miserables where Javert commits suicide, knowing he is right by the law but Valjean is right by God).

People have different tastes.

For example, I am a fan of a band called Van Der Graaf Generator. I suspect there are few if any others here who join me in this fandom, or even have the slightest idea of who they are.

And that's OK. We don't all have to love Hamilton either. Or hate Cats.

+vdgg won't be playing the superbowl halftime show (though I would love to see an NFL crowd reaction to A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers).
