I’m like the guy who only goes to church on Easter. I haven’t followed pro football since the mid-90s but in recent years I’ve started watching the super bowl and I have a few questions. Why don’t college teams put microphones in the QBs helmets like the pros? That would be so much better than the weird signaling methods now in use. When did they move the PAT back to the 10 yard line? What the heck was that commercial with the color changing QR code floating around the screen? Seems like a waste of a few million dollars.

It has been several years since they moved the PAT back.

On the helmet issue every school publicly supports it but privately many grumble about the cost. There are a few stadiums where the design of the press box makes reception spotty on the field. The real reason is a significant number of schools have pretty sophisticated sign stealing operations. And that would go away.

I watched simply to see Goodell’s reaction if Snoop would light up.

We all know who you are so I"m sure they'll have Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas to appeal to your whiteness soon. It was an EPIC halftime performance. I don't rate it the best as I still have Prince wailing Purple Rain IN A DOWNPOUR as the best halftime show of all time but this one is among the best of all time and certainly the best in the last 10 years or so.

Apparently Dre wasn't suppose to drop the line about the police in there...he did. Eminem wasn't supposed to kneel...he did. I know the halftime show was announced months ago but it seems that all of the pre game stuff, God Bless America, the anthem, and The Rock and maybe it's coincidence, maybe not, but seems that the NFL was trying to appease black players and coaches in light of the recent lawsuit.

Katy Perry actually wasn’t terrible, nor was Bruno Mars… before that I’d go back to Prince. His was special…. Before that it’s a lot of bleh until you get to MJ.

I dig how simple this one was. Multiple performers doing a good job and with a really simple but creative set design. Compare it to last year and it’s night and day.

I personally would like to see a full Red Hot Chili Peppers set. (They did a side spot a few years ago) Someone on Twitter suggested a 2000’s pop punk reunion for millennials. Blink 182, fallout boy, My chemical romance… etc…

Muse always puts on an epic show. They would never get picked but it would be one of the best shows you would ever see in terms of quality of music and stage performance.

I bet Foo fighters will be selected before I die.

Foo Fighters?

Possibly. Only because they are PBS Rock.

That's not a compliment.

I read somewhere that Dre paid $8 million out of pocket to produce the show and buy suite tickets. No tour or album to promote. No ads for his business. He just lit the money on fire to have fun with his friends while we all watched. I don’t know about you but that’s some gangster stuff to me. It was good to see him have fun past age 50.

I was excited about Katy Perry because I heard she was inspired by Janet Jackson. It didn’t go the way I thought.

I did like the cheerleaders that Dre found though.

You know, as funny as it sounds, John Mayer might be a really interesting show. Have him do a more Prince type thing with some of his blues rock stuff combined with some 80's covers.

Prince's setlist was: "We Will Rock You", "Let's Go Crazy", "Baby I'm a Star", "1999" + "Proud Mary" Mashup, "All Along the Watchtower - Dylan Version", and "Purple Rain". Mayer could pull all that off. Though he doesn't have Prince's aura about him.

It would at least be better than Petty and Springsteen.

They've taken the video version down, but Mayer was the last artist to close Conan's old show and probably performed the best version of California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas I've ever heard, with a full choir. The guitar solo KILLS.

Just have Dave Matthews Band play the whole game along the sideline and cut in and out.

I think there are a lot of great acts out there that do solid live concerts. The problem becomes playing a half time show where the artists maybe have 15 minutes to perform. Dre, Snoop, Eminem, and Mary J Blige just sort of coming up with a show that can naturally flow and segue like it did was great. I'm a solid U2 fan but I think the Super Bowl halftime show just doesn't work with how they produce their live shows...and it might hamper a lot of good acts out there. And acts today have either the substance or the show and very few have both right now and as the more recent SB halftime acts have fallen flat because they focus is more on the show than the music and it actually seems forced and contrived.

This one seemed more natural...more passion...more about let's just have fun with this and I'd say they succeeded.

I think the problem is that a lot of the bands they get don’t really have the catalog to support a halftime show and they tend to shy away from covers. Prince was good because he mixed in some of his better known songs with good renditions of other works.

The last show was good because they had 4 good artists who all got one song.

Maroon 5 can’t support a 12-15 minute show with hits that are worthy of the super bowl. Neither can U2. I think the Chili Peppers have 5-10 songs to choose from that they could throw out and kill. Mayer could go the Prince route and kill with covers and one or two of his own.

That’s why I think Tom Petty and Springsteen were pretty lousy choices. They performed B-tier songs from their catalogue. Even McCartney was a bit weird as he opened with “Drive My Car” which isn’t one of the best of his songs.

U2 could pull it off... but the danger is that Bono would go off politically in the performance... my wife dragged me to their show in Norman years ago... told her i would walk out if he got political... he did.. and i did...

Bono had moments of political clarity early in his career. (Rattle and Hum’s Sunday Bloody Sunday performance for example) Since then it’s become him being political just to be political. It’s still a waste to walk out of their show though. You know what you’re getting when you go to their show. I wouldn’t walk out of a country concert just because they said something stupid.

I'd be interested to know what you consider "political". Call for humane treatment of people? Calls for social justice and racial equality? Calls for people to actually live out their Christian/Catholic values vs just proclaiming them for the world to hear? Anytime I've seen them in concert, these are about the only topics they cover or bring attention to. I'm not sure when any of those became political because shouldn't we all be striving for a world that treats everyone equally and justly? And it's the same for the right when they call for actors/directors/entertainers to "stay in their lane"...why shouldn't people who have a following and a platform use them to try to make the world better?

Sunday Bloody Sunday is a brilliant song. I listen to the U2 station on Sirius pretty frequently. That song came on the other day and my son asked about it so I tried to explain it.

Have you seen what he said on rattle and hum? He was making his commentary a few hours after the Remembrance Day Bombing in Ireland in and what he says about the troubles. It’s really poignant.

“Now lemme tell you somethin'. I've had enough of Irish Americans who haven't been back to their country in twenty or thirty years come up to me and talk about the resistence, the revolution back home. And the glory of the revolution, and the glory of dyin' for the revolution. F*** the revolution! They don't talk about the glory of killing for the revolution. What's the glory in takin' a man from his bed and gunnin' him down in front of his wife and his children? Where's the glory in that? Where's the glory in bombing a Rememberance Day parade of old-aged pensioners, their medals taken out and polished up for the day. Where's the glory in that? To leave them dyin', or crippled for life, or dead, under the rubble…of a revolution… that the majority of the people of my country don't want. Sing no more!”

It’s interesting because a lot of Americans (including me) support full Irish independence. But the price that was being paid was certainly unnecessary.

I've always seen Bono's activism as something more akin to there's always a more peaceful effective way to get your message across than shooting or bombing someone you disagree with. He would have called out the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh the same way

According to Rolling Stone magazine, U2’s 2002 Super Bowl halftime show is #2 all time behind Prince.
2002 was a year the Patriots didn't play in the Super Bowl so there's a good chance I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to anything 🤣
