I rarely go to chains. Covid is putting a hurting on local businesses and it's just not fun to go out. We take our cooking seriously and we can make better food at home then we can usually find going out. We go out for experience, not the food. The exception is Chinese and some Mexican. Fish is about the only thing I don't like to cook and will go out to eat.
Same here. We love to cook. Anything American or Italian we can do better in our kitchen than what we’d get in a restaurant. I can cook the hell out of some fish.

We do some really good specialty specific things from the various other cultures, but not as good as what we can find at local places. I love Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, probably more so than American. Indian is also way up there on my list.

There used to be little places scattered all over the Morgantown area for various specialty stuff. You only have to eat at the chains if you want to.
There still are. You have to pay attention because places cone and go.

Pretty much like you. Italian is a no brainer, but making sauce and noodles from scratch is time consuming, but worth it. My Mexican game has really picked up. I will lightly smoke or grill the meat and add fresh veggies...or we take left over steak or chicken and turn it into Mexican the next day.

My wife does not like Indian food, but we do like some Mediterranean food, but we have just started playing with it. I have started to dabble with Cajan again and have attempted Thai food but it turned out avg...so we are not there yet.

We do this all the time, I’m a huge proponent of jalapeños. I probably eat 4-5 a week. Amazing what some fresh veggies, a dollop of guac, and a tortilla can do for leftover chicken or meat. It’s still not like getting some fresh to table carne asada.

We’ve been dialing in the Thai for years.

We don’t even attempt Chinese. I just go 2 mins down the road and grab it. It’s my hang over food, only time I eat it. That and big cup of coffee, usually a solid 45 mins blowing the MSG out in the bathroom a little while later and I feel right as rain.

That's pretty much us. Fresh Carne asada is bomb. Where do you find your Thai ingredients? I find it hard to find even when we lived outside of Philly.

Most of our grocery stores have the stuff you need for the basic starter ingredients, coconut milk, peppers (I mostly use some type of chili pepper), yellow/red curry paste, ginger root, fish oil, etc.. From there, it’s just mix and match to taste and consistency and adding in whatever meats and veggies you want. We mostly use shrimp when we do it.

A lot of this food is stuff your average peasant farmer has access to in their native nation whether it’s Mexico, Latin America, Thai, Lebanon, etc. Just have to know what spices to use. If they can do it, you can.

We started going to going Jersey Mikes in NJ...as a quick meal after going to the gym or shopping. If you get away from the chains, there are lots of places in NJ, NYC and Philly that is at a different level. Primo Subs is better than Jersey Mikes, but they are a local chain...I was focused on National Chains as we have moved to Morgantown now and the pickings are slim...it's chain or bust-there is a place on the mile ground that is decent but thats about all we have found.

I got 'ya. Guess down here in Atlanta we consider Publix a "chain" 'cause they're all over. Their subs are to die for, no joke.
