he blew it. He has a 38-0 team and lost by stall ball. A guy did a simulation 100000 times and kentucky wins 81% of the time if they didnt slow down the pace. He was up 4 and choked.

I'm not at all confident he is willing / able to change and adapt to today's game, but he has long been an innovator (for better or worse) and deserves every chance to do so.
At the same time, if Texas comes along and plucks him away tomorrow, so be it.

Somebody might wanna tell Texas it’s the wrong time to invest in John Calipari. The only part of his job that he was special at was recruiting elite talent and that talent is no longer available to him.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't one of the biggest criticisms of his contract is that Barnhart didn't put a buyout in it for another team hiring him? It was only paid to him if we fired him without cause? So he would be free to go wherever he wants with no repercussions.
I agree....it all depends on what they think Cal has left and how serious they are about Texas basketball.
But Texas would be very content for a decade with S16s and E8s and would be much more forgiving of the occasional flop season that Cal has now done 2 out of 10 (almost a 3rd w 2016). Look how long they kept mediocre March results w Rick Barnes. And they're fans don't know enough about basketball to question strategy. Cal can also use his "slow developing, March is all the Matters, meanwhile I'm losing games to average teams in December" method of team progression without the Texas Fanbase fretting over every L. There isn't a tradition to ruin there. Great place for Cal to coast until he is ready to retire.
Here's the thing, rational people don't limit their assessment to most recent few years. The guy can flat out coach even if the hilljacks don't want to acknowledge it because he doesn't pander to you and make you feel like your opinion matters.
There is no buyout for a school to get him. If he ever left for another university, that University doesn't pay anything. Cal just leaves for another job with either university paying a buyout.
Less pressure at Texas that's for sure. Football is king, basketball just takes up the space on the sports section until spring football.
While nobody owes UK anything if Cal leaves, the buyout itself makes it less likely that Cal leaves. Most think this was a terrible contract, and maybe it was, but if the rumor of UCLA offerring Cal 10 mil/yr is true, then we kept him for a lot less. Cal got 8 mil this year (obviously overpaid this year), and is scheduled to get a total of 8.5 mil the next 4 years, then 9 mil for the 4 years after that if he keeps coaching. The buyout the university must pay to fire him is 75% of the remaining money on the contract if he remains the coach. If he elects to step down from coaching after 2024, then he came remain with the university as a special assistant, which would decrease his salary to 1 mil/yr. However, if he steps down to that position, then the buyout moves to 100%, or 1 mil/yr until 2029. Contrary to what I have heard, I can find no where in the contract where Cal would receive anything past 2029, ie 1 mil/yr for life. The contract states that the terms, without being extended end in 2029, regardless of what position he is in.
Now for why the buyout helps UK to retain him. Another school could come after Cal, and offer him big money, but are unlikely to offer that kind of buyout, or guaranteed money. Even a school offering Cal 10 mil/yr, but little buyout is probably not going to lure him away, because if he is fired, he won't get as much money. If the UCLA rumors are true, then the buyout is what was needed to retain Cal without matching the 10 mil/yr. In fact, unless the contract is amended, Cal will never earn 10 mil/yr at UK.
Calipari can no longer land the elites and he isn’t a good X’s and O’s coach. He’d have mediocre to awful results there like he has had here the last 6 seasons.
He won’t be adapting or changing his ways here so I wouldn’t be the least bit upset to see him leave.

I'm not in the camp to fire him after this year, but I would have NO problem with him leaving. I still think the game has passed him by. Before you start screaming, you don't know what your talking about, compare his record from 2010-2015 versus 2016 -2021. I think it is stupid for any AD to ever give a lifetime contract to any coach, and the buyout should never be more then 3 years of a coach's salary. Would I like to see him take another job, you bet I would. His game is stale, and I believe he is to arrogant to make changes. I don't believe he can get the TOP talent anymore. I don't believe he can get at least 3 players of the TOP 25. He can say what he is going to do, and I have heard it in the past, different song, same dance. I know there are really good coaches who we could get, who understand the game, and the changes to the game.

There is nothing universally agreed to on this board.
If Texas wants him, they can have him. They claim things are much bigger in Texas which is a good place for a large mouth blowhard.
They are going to retain Shaka to coach, and hire Cal as Chief recruiter and PR person.
Whether you want Cal gone, or not, it seems to me that everyone here recognizes that he needs to make some fundamental changes in his program.
Also, he will recreate his expressway to the NBA for any player, ready or not.
Cal makes almost twice as much as the Texas football coach. People lose sight of how ridiculous his contract is. The Texas kitchen sink won't rise higher for a basketball coach than a foitball coach.

You couldn’t pay me enough to deal with some of the fans even though the great fans outnumber the loud, obnoxious and entitled, it still would be to much to take on thinking you have to keep people happy instead of doing what you envision and managing your team.
