I am still trying to wrap my head around how a program with so little to offer can somehow be better than us. Certainly not through their recruiting which over the last few years has been worse than ours. Many always bring up our facilities being a detriment to recruiting, but Temple essentially has NO facilities!
Would we being doing better if we were in the American? Maybe marginally, but what happened last week has to beg the question... just how sure would anyone be about that?
The easy answer for most would be that they are better coached than RU. Again, how the hell can that be true? How can lowly Temple find better coaches than we can? Can they outspend us? Does anyone really think any prospective coach would choose a school with Temple's football history plus no real infrastructure?
Let's not even consider the fan support issue here.
You also have to consider the institutional support of the two schools. I find it difficult to believe that there isn't, at least, the same level of negativity by their professors as we see at RU.
Truly, this really baffles me.

Temple would be getting their dicks kicked in if they were in the B1G East, trust me. Not to mention their Olympic sports are utter trash. At least RU is successful in sports like wrestling, men's lax, women's soccer and field hockey.

Temple would beat Kansas and wouldn't be 6 point underdogs at home v. U of Buffalo.

Is 75% of their team sophomore or below? Have they had multiple players kicked off the team in multiple years? Have they had 3 ocs in 3 years?

Development is incredibly important for programs like us and temple. Having 4th and 5th year guys in positions to be successful is what is CRITICAL to our development.

In our rebuilding time look at some of our top players and how long they were in our program. These journeymen plays helped elevate the younger guys around them.

Tres moses, The offensive line in 2006, Brian Leonard, Meekins, Foster, etc. etc. These were guys who were work ethic guys who spent 3, 4, 5 and years buying into a system and it paid off. With players like that you can sprinkle in young studs to be successful.

If we had a bunch of senior and junior WRs I would feel much better about starting a freshmen QB. If we had a proven stud, older, RB or a proven old offensive line I would feel better about young skills positions.

We do not have that. We are young basically every where on offense. Even the guys who have played have no seen success and teaching success is hard to come by.

I say this kindly, but it's possible you;re baffled because you don't know that much about Temple or its program.

They do have facilities, and they're not bad at all. Are they Big Ten-level? No, but if you haven't seen the football facility, you might be surprised.

How does Temple find better coaches? I guess by having smarter athletic administrators, along with a little good fortune. That's correctable, though, on Rutgers' part. They can't outspend you (though Geoff Collins might make more than Chris Ash, I'm not sure), but while they don't have a lot of long-term history to sell, it's not really a poor comparison to Rutgers' history, Which shows spikes in 1869 and 2006, and it really pretty flat, otherwise. I don't think I'm speaking out of turn on this.

Fan support is a bit of apples to oranges. Their stadium (well, it's isn't theirs) is ten miles from campus, and they don't play the attractive conference slate that Rutgers does. But fans show up for marquee games - see the most recent Penn State and Notre Dame games. Though there were plenty of opposing fans there for both, they were strongly dominated by the Owls faithful. Anyone who says otherwise either wasn't there or is trying to mislead you. Their proposed on-campus stadium is still much more likely than not to be built, and that will provide a big boost to attendance. Their football program is never going to exist in the scope of a Big Ten program, but that's a product of their league ... as well as of their environment. College football just isn't ever going to be a huge deal in the northeast in a typical year - it's strictly pro territory - but it's been shown that spikes if success will be rewarded with attention. Who ever thought Temple would host College Game Day? That was huge for them.

In my observation, the level of negativity toward football is not equal to that at Rutgers, though it exists. I don't think anyone has a major problem with football in and of itself (then again, the university doesn't pick the students' pockets to fund it at the level Rutgers does, either), but there is some opposition to the on-campus stadium. It won't ultimately matter, though. It won;t be the reason it fails, if it does.

Temple is cast in the role of underdog in the context of college football, but rather than deny it or pretend otherwise, the university and the program have embraced it, made it a part of appeal and its identity of toughness and perseverance. It is reflected by the culture of the city, too. And that resonates with the kids they go after.

Flood would still have had his problems with the football program whatever conference we were in. As a program, ,we would be feeling the pinch this year as the Big East payouts (exit fees and NCAA credits) came to an end. The American contract would have been more than it is with RU and Louisville in the conference but not that much more.

We might not have hired Ash and gone ffor a less expensive coach when Flood was canned. Or not fired Flood. Or not ffired Julie.

As currently constituted? Yes, they would have a hard time sustaining that level of physical rigor week in and week out. Of course, if they were actually in the Big Ten, they would be able to recruit that type of player, which alters those dynamics.

Olympic sports happen in a vacuum. No. Body. Cares.

When those sports get TV time on BTN, yes they do matter.

always the jimmies and Joes,you dont recruit them,you dont win.
Ash and staff cant recruit.
RU is a underdog ,at home vrs a MAC school..that says enough where Ash has the program..

Since they got kicked out of the big east conference. I think temple football has made a remarkable recovery. They have been successful with three different coaches already. That says a lot . That is the sign of a successful program.Would love to see that here.

Temple's Geoff Collins was never a HC prior to Temple, he came from a program similar to OSU, he had no previous ties to the Northeast and his salary is most likely less then Ash's. (The State of PA lets colleges hide the salaries of their football coaches so we don't know what his salary.)

These are all of the things sited by many on this board as to why RU isn't successful: Ash had no HC experience, no ties to NJ, we are cheap. etc, etc.

Well Temple has had some success with their last 3 HCs. As a long time RU fan I can't figure out how we can get it wrong for so many years when we have so much more to offer then TU. Is it that RU is unlucky when selecting a coach or do we look for the wrong kind of personality? Perhaps we should simply hire the Temple AD and let him/her select our next football coach.

The problem is that there will probably be a greater-than-average turnover of RU's underclassmen due to the credit card arrests and do to disenchanted freshman who leave due to the state of the program.

I remember when Temple was usually considered a solid win for us year in year out. At times made us earn the win but never really matched our talent and ability. How times have changed.

Hey, you may be onto something....maybe Rutgers doesn't need its own athletic dept and should just outsource that function to smarter people? Think of the administrative cost savings! LOL

Temple is a ****** program, always will be

One RU gets a President that sees the value in college athletics, we will then have the resources to hire a real head coach again.

At that point RU will once again be a bowl team and draw 45k+ per home game

Beg to differ. Football and basketball, the rest is for players, parents, niche fans, and filler content for SEC, BTN, etc., networks.

They have had a better football team the last 5 years or so. Just killed Maryland who will very likely beat us. Really glad that we have not played them recently. Put them in the B1G and us in the the American, and they would be even better due to resources and exposure. They are doing something right and RU is doing something majorly wrong. Only football and men's basketball matter as they are the revenue sports. Let's wait until we see how we do against Buffalo before slamming them for losing to Buffalo. Buffalo is a better team than Kansas.
