9 games into 2021...it’s confirmed that this is a major rebuild.
I’ll give GS2.0 and staff credit for absolutely pulling 4 wins out this year with what we talent and athletiscm as a whole we have in the program ...(and a chance at more)....but it does beg the question about player development and our staff .
There hasn’t a lot of player development this year from where players left off last year. The age old question what we did last year really max out what we had last year and there wasn’t anything else to squeeze out of Ash leftovers for this year ...or did this staff NOT do a good job of getting these kids to step up this year after the progress last year ?
It’s a question that we need to ask...and be watchful off...
We really won’t know the full answer to that for a at least three years ...when this years true frosh are true seniors and redshirt juniors and the class of 2022 to be signed shortly are true juniors and redshirt soph, with another class behind it as true soph and redshirt frosh. Then we will see if the staff can develop enough higher ranked players to compete at the big ten level ...
Time will tell....
Certainly, some of this COULD be masked if Winstatt is truly the real deal (and that’s a lot of pressure) ...but it’s going to be hard for that to happen when he also needs receivers and a line to improve with him . They aren’t in place yet
Until then ...it’s really about looking for signs of the younger player being able to really play at the big ten level
We were 1-11 and 2-10 in the previous regime last two years
We won 3 games and at least 4 games in the last two years of GS 2.0
I would sign up right now for slow progress of 5-7 and 6-6 over the next two years while the class 2022, 2023 and 2024 grow up.
It’s going to be rough...and we could plateau at 4-8ish Ofer the next couple of years while this happens
we have five games in 2022 and Six games in 2023 in programs that are way ahead of us that would take a major upset to get any ONE of them as a win
2022
Michigan
Penn state
Iowa
At Ohio state
At Michigan state
2023
Ohio state
Michigan state
At Michigan
At penn state
At Iowa
At Wisconsin
Plus...outside of temple and a 1AA games ...expected wins ...to expect us to sweep the other four or five big ten games and out of confrence power five games is expecting a lot .
Reality is , if we are good enough to sweep these other games that aren’t powerhouse in the big ten...we are probably good enough to beat a one or two of the lower end powerhouse programs, especially in a off year
I’m not seeing that in 2022....won’t comment on 2022, way too far out
I would LOVE to see progress to expect more ..but it’s about getting players and developing them. Like 4O of them to compete
And given what I have seen through 9 games this year ...the jury is out on GS2.0 and staff to do that ...
And it’s just going to take a lot of patience that asking this fan base to have more patience ...isn’t going to go over easy
