I would add that our ability to take, "the next step up" rather than go back is affected by our relative status vs our in-state rival, Ole Miss. Part of moving up is establishing our program as much superior to Ole Miss so we can capitalize on recruiting relative to them. We have been better, and at this point should be much better...but that is looking questionable now.
If Joe runs us into the ground this year and next, any chance we had of taking that step are gone. In fact, it's entirely possible we'll become the ones getting "stepped on" by Ole Miss. We will have completely wasted away the chance we had to put Ole Miss in our rear view for years to come, thus making moving up later much more challenging.
Makes me sick to think of it. I'm still not 100% sure firing Joe this year is the better choice, but I am damn sure worried about the "other costs" we'll pay if Joe does ultimately crash & burn and we don't do anything about it until Ole Miss is on an equal or even stronger footing with us. How often do we get a chance to position ourselves as clearly better?
That said, firing Joe and hiring the wrong guy to replace him could make things as bad or worse. As much as I am disillusioned with this team under Joe, I can't simply dismiss the fact it is just year 2, he is using mostly Dan's recruits, he has lost 3 first rounders on D, is dealing with suspensions that are hurting us, and his QB got injured. There is enough there to give me pause about Joe's actual quality and potential as HC. He still may well be a great coach for us if he has his guys playing his system the way it is supposed to be played.
It's one helluva conundrum. Both sides of this coin can be the right or wrong choice, and the wrong choice can be absolutely disastrous for us.
