He’s a Bama alum. Huge Bama fan, red elephant club, all that. His parents are huge MSU fans so naturally he likes to see state do well too. We had a nice long conversation on the absurdity that alot of you think that a coach wouldn’t come here because we fired ****** joe Moorhead after two years. Are y’all smoking crack? Do you know how coaches brains work?

And others of you are assuming things you shouldn’t. Like that it’s a given that we win another game. Like I said earlier and got blasted for, we just don’t know how bad we are yet. Don’t assume anything. If we go 4-8 or even a win better, he should most definitely be fired. But where I agree with y’all is that he won’t. And if he isn’t, we are finished for a long long time. The atmosphere that has been football saturdays for a lot of us will be over. We’ve been spoiled for a long time. This could be the end. Everything working out in the end may not be the result.

I definitely don’t agree but I’m cool with your passion for State and your viewpoints. You are a passionate and funny poster. Kudos for believing in what you believe. Can’t upvote you though cause I don’t agree. But dang dude you are fun to read

For us. Firing a coach and hiring a homerun is not that easy. Look at our last coaching search. The best we could come up with was Morris, Pruitt, and Joe. Look at our last baseball search. Everyone thought we were pulling Vandy, Louisville, or TCU coaches. Look what happened when we let Stansbury go. Can’t remember the names but everyone thought we were about to land some up and coming mid major coaches. Hell look at the last basketball search. We lucked into Howland because of Adidas. .

A winning, proven head coach isn’t coming here. We’re taking a retread or a coordinator. I’m not arguing for or against Joe. I’m saying we’re not Alabama and it’s not that easy.

Go ahead and say this is a woah is me lil ol MS State attitude. It’s not. It’s reality.

$EC...with a big bold $ for . So many coaches would love a shot of SEC money, SEC media exposure, SEC prestige, and a chance to coach at the highest 17ing level outside of the NFL.

In 2008 we were tantalizingly close to getting Peterson from Boise State who was one of the hottest coaches in America after that 2006 win over Oklahoma. And 2008 was the 45-0 Egg Bowl beatdown from Ole Miss year and Anthony Dixon totally outta shape like "Fat Thor" he was over 260 pounds, and Jack Cristil with "The Sonic drive of the game, will be my drive back to Tupelo." But instead we got one of the top Offensive Coordinators in the country who had just led Florida to the national championship---so let's not wallow in this "Woe is me, we is just poor Ole dumb Moo-Univ. ain't never gonna be no good" Ole Miss propaganda ********!

I would add that our ability to take, "the next step up" rather than go back is affected by our relative status vs our in-state rival, Ole Miss. Part of moving up is establishing our program as much superior to Ole Miss so we can capitalize on recruiting relative to them. We have been better, and at this point should be much better...but that is looking questionable now.

If Joe runs us into the ground this year and next, any chance we had of taking that step are gone. In fact, it's entirely possible we'll become the ones getting "stepped on" by Ole Miss. We will have completely wasted away the chance we had to put Ole Miss in our rear view for years to come, thus making moving up later much more challenging.

Makes me sick to think of it. I'm still not 100% sure firing Joe this year is the better choice, but I am damn sure worried about the "other costs" we'll pay if Joe does ultimately crash & burn and we don't do anything about it until Ole Miss is on an equal or even stronger footing with us. How often do we get a chance to position ourselves as clearly better?

That said, firing Joe and hiring the wrong guy to replace him could make things as bad or worse. As much as I am disillusioned with this team under Joe, I can't simply dismiss the fact it is just year 2, he is using mostly Dan's recruits, he has lost 3 first rounders on D, is dealing with suspensions that are hurting us, and his QB got injured. There is enough there to give me pause about Joe's actual quality and potential as HC. He still may well be a great coach for us if he has his guys playing his system the way it is supposed to be played.

It's one helluva conundrum. Both sides of this coin can be the right or wrong choice, and the wrong choice can be absolutely disastrous for us.

Great reply. I would argue that one of the most telling signs is that ole miss is actually on equal footing with us today. And are about to surpass us. And that wouldn’t be so difficult to swallow if we weren’t supposed to have our foot on their throat right now.

Just remember one thing. Nobodys opinion here is gonna make any difference one way or the other. Joe was the choice and will continue to be the coach regardless for another year or two. Which I think is the right decision. But it doesnt matter. He ain't going anywhere either way

Every person reaches the point when they see a hire will not work out. I’ve reached that point, but I also realize that calling for his job it is futile. Ultimately, the guy that hired him is going to have to overcome the hit to the ego and come to the same conclusion. This program is in desperate need of some energy and life. In a year from now, I think we will be in a worse position to make a good hire. That’s just my opinion, but to state the obvious, it’s 100% on Cohen to make the best decision for us moving forward and it is critical he has a plan that will work.

Disagree about the atmosphere. If we made a good hire 2 years from now, the fans would sell out the first game as long as it wasn't Jeremy Pruit we were hiring.

We've got a really good freshman class right now, our QB of the future looks like an absolute stud, the current recruiting class is really good too and full of skill talent just like the last class was. I think he deserves to call the program his even if it's a bad team on Saturday's and it takes at least 3 years for a HC to make a program his. That sounds scary right now, but I think the risk of transfers and killing this recruiting class could set us back further than having Joe for another year.

Worst case scenario we have a Orgeron situation where a really good coach sees the talent we've assembled and comes in and wins here right away.

There's just no upside to firing Joe this year outside of him losing out and then it's up for serious discussion.

This all the way except I think we could get a good coach. When we hired Joe, I'm pretty sure there was a lot of new coaches that season so the pickings were slim. You made some irrefutable points though.

Having said that, Cohen being our AD makes me wonder if we would hire a good coach....

I don’t believe this at all. We can pay a coach $5 million per year. We can hire a good proven coach. Financially speaking, we are not even in the same universe that we were in when croom and even Mullen were hired.

I don’t understand why we just have to keep someone for a minimum of three years if everyone in the country knows he’s not going to work out. I don’t understand that mindset. Never have. Never will. If we know we’re gonna fire him, let’s do it. Why must we wait?

OM is not on equal footing. We have a much better roster than them. Coaching is probably worse though sadly.

Because of John Cohen. He won’t do it. Firing Moorhead in year two would show everyone that they were right in him being over his head as AD.

I gave you several reasons and it all has to do with keeping our roster talented. I think a coach can come in and light a fire under talented players asses much faster than a roster that decimated by transfers and a bad recruiting class or two. Not to mention 2021 class is loaded. If he sucks, you fire him halfway through the 2020 season, so we get a head start trying to hire someone.

I don’t understand it either. If a coach turns down a job because the person before him sucked then he’s probably not the guy for the job anyway. When we hired Mullen, croom was 1 year removed from our first bowl game in nearly a decade. It didn’t stop Mullen from taking the job. Guys who are confident don’t worry about **** like that.

Mullen had less head coaching experience than Moorhead when we hired him. Moorhead was also considered one of the best OC’s in the country. Let’s not rewrite history and pretend that Moorhead wasn’t a widely praised hire at the time, because he was. It hasn’t worked out yet but just about everyone expected that it would.

Being in the SEC West makes us a relatively attractive job, but it also means you have to play Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Texas A&M every single year. That is usually a minimum of 3-4 losses before you even start looking at any other games. It’s incredibly naive to ignore the challenges that come with our job. We have an upper tier baseball program and still had to settle for at best our third or fourth option. A football hire certainly wouldn’t be as easy as some of you would make it seem.

We MAYBE can hire someone better than Joe this offseason, but the odds of hiring someone even worse are just as high. I’m not happy with him at all right now and if I had to guess, this ends with his firing eventually sometime between 2020 and 2022, but we aren’t pulling the trigger this year unless the team just totally quits. And we probably shouldn’t anyway. Many folks just assume that the worst is coming, and it very well may, but we’re 3-2 right now and are still favored to go 7-5. I don’t blame anyone at all for expecting us to keep disappointing, but he still has to do a good bit more of that before we get to “fireable offense” level. It may not be what some of you want to hear, but it’s the truth.

That's just crazy. Plumlee is not the answer at QB in the SEC...you think he's going to carry the ball 25x time a game and hold up? Teams have film on OM and will take them seriously. They aren't going to magically start running it down everyone's throat now. They caught people's attention for sure, but they won't be beating any teams that are any good this year. Bama also had a fluke muffed punt that gave OM momentum early. They still drove it down the field 30 yards for an eventual TD, but they didn't earn the turnover. It could have easily been 14-0 and it's likely a differ ball game.

"Plenty more candidates?" Who were they? Pruit and Morris like another poster mentioned? Holy **** at least Cohen didn't give us one of those guys!

Think about that too: that's how slim the pickens were. Tenn hires Pruitt and Ark hired Morris who sucked at SMU. They went from hiring Burt away from Wisconsin to hiring SMU coach with I think a losing record at SMU and oh yeah, according to the Aflac trivia question, one of 4 P5 head coaches to not play collegiate football.

Btw, you made all valid points. I think just a little more patience is needed for the good of the program long term. I've also accepted it. I don't feel as bad about it anymore. Since I jumped off the Jomo train against UK, I'm 'two weeks sober' in a way.

Because our roster would lose some talented guys we just signed and probably get immediate eligibility bc of coaching change. You know how the NCAA is when it comes to MSU. Also our current class could fall apart.

Not to mention Cohen might hire another dumb ***. There's just simply no upside of doing it this year unless he lost every game the rest of the season. I still think we go 7-5.

ETA: If we suck next year, we might could get a two for one: Fire the IB and Jomo. How's that for a fresh start?

That's all on the coaches. If we were well coached, we have the talent to beat Auburn or at least play them close. The unpreparedness and on the field coaching is what Joe sucks at, but he's pretty good (so far) of bringing in highly rated talent at nearly every position other than TE bc Don left us with about 8 TEs.

You gotta remember the Tutorgate 10. That HAS to play into it.
