I really liked him as a referee. If I saw him leading the crew for a game, I knew we were going to get a fairly called game with few-to-no WTF moments. However, in the time that he's been head of SEC officials, quality of officiating has steadily declined. There were two inexcusable situations that happened Saturday: the failure of the officials to admit that they signaled the play dead on the fake punt in our game (ultimately changed the outcome) and miscounting the downs in the Penn State-Auburn game (ultimately didn't change the outcome). There have been many other bad officiating moments over the last several years (the phantom block in the back against Alabama a few years back comes to mind). I don't know if it's the talent pool they draw officials from or if it's poor training, but it's clear the quality of SEC officiating has fallen over the past several years and shows no signs of improving. I don't know if Shaw is part of the problem, but he needs to become part of the solution.
