I was looking at our quality wins. We're 4-5 in games against teams who are locks or in the conversation for hosting. 10 of our final 11 are against those kinda teams.

In case it wasn't already clear what we're getting into.

USM played the RPI game PERFECTLY this season

Started with UCSB - who is a top 40 RPI

Road game at SE Louisiana - who is a top 100 RPI

Purdue, Oregon State and Baylor - all top 60 with OSU being top 10

Alabama - a top 10 RPI

Series with La Tech - top 75 RPI

Beat us in Hattiesburg - top 15 RPI

They were 12-1 before they faced a sub 100 RPI team, and it was #112 Nichols and a series with #164 UNA.

Ole Miss - top 15 RPI

Then their Sun Belt series

47 Arkansas State
60 Troy
105 App State
138 Old Dominion
51 Louisiana
37 Texas State
84 South Alabama

Mix in another game with State and a couple with Tulane/SE Louisiana

They have not played a game against a team with higher than a 164 RPI. We have played 10. Ole Miss has played/will play 6.

They have the weakest teams in the SBC left so their RPI will drop.

142 ULM
149 JMU
223 Georgia Southern

More Tulane, SE Louisiana, South Alabama, Troy, Samford and less Alcorn/Grambling/Jackson State/Delaware
Ok. this makes sense. You’re super punished for playing the games vs the 200+ RPI type teams, the auto wins. Here’s my issue, for elite teams there isnt much difference in the #150 team and the #300 team, either way you are beating both teams 10/10 times. So even tho you are getting a win regardless, the #150 team doesn’t necessarily hurt you while the #300 team essentially like a loss, you will lose tons of RPI points regardless of the win. Southern played mediocre teams for their sure wins, we played horrendous teams for our sure wins.

so the question is… why the hell are we scheduling this many RPI killers??? Why??? It literally serves zero positive purpose. It kills your RPI just by playing them, and honestly, as Oak has even alluded to, you can’t take anything from these games bc of the talent gap. So again why??? Let’s please be done with this lose lose scheduling. There is no reason for us to play 3 SWAC teams who are 300s in RPI, thats like an entire wkind series. And let’s stay away from the Hofstra’s and Delaware’s.

this Kind of scheduling sets a ceiling for your RPI

Just a bit. Current SOS is #31. Projected SOS is #6.
Yeah it is going to work itself out. The opportunity to lock in a top 8 seed is right in front of us, we gotta earn it tho, and if we don’t, we didn’t deserve it. This 3 week stretch will be a good test run for the postseason. get McPherson back and we are cooking

You will occasionally lose to a #150 RPI team. Maybe lose 1 out of 10-20 games. But even when you do, it's still better for your RPI than beating Alcorn St. So yeah. Just avoid the 200+ teams and you'll be OK.

We've been asking that question for years on here. It used to destroy us in men's basketball but we have seemed to fix the scheduling there.

In baseball, more games helps, but we are 34-10 and have played 15 games against Quad 4. We've only played 6 non-conference games in Quad 2 and 3. Here's some Southern non-conference teams that we should consider scheduling more:

Jacksonville State (RPI 33)
UAB (RPI 40)
Arkansas State (RPI 46)
Louisiana (RPI 51)
Mercer (RPI 54)
Western Carolina (RPI 56)
Troy (RPI 60)
South Alabama (RPI 84)
SE Louisiana (RPI 89)
East Tennessee State (RPI 93)
Little Rock (RPI 103)

Replacing those mid-week games with JSU, Alcorn and Grambling with SE Louisiana, ETSU, and Little Rock would raise our RPI from 15 to 11. Replace the Lipscomb series with a series with South Alabama and we're up another three spots.

RPI is a horrible stat but all those G5 ADs on the committee don't want to get rid of it because it helps the G5 schools. Something about the algorithm is slanted towards equity of G5 schools
They don’t need RPI to prop up the G5 schools. Last year, Alabama had a far more host-worthy resume than USM, based on RPI and everything else. They still gave USM the regional and sent Alabama on the road there.

Here is the problem is with RPI.

USM's strength of schedule is 6
MSU's strength of schedule is 30

Pull up MSU's schedule & USM's schedule & tell me what team has played vs higher level players & programs this year.

Something is badly off on the strength of schedule metrics with RPI.
It won’t be that way at the end of the season.

And the reason its that way right now is that USM really has played a legit schedule. There are 2 sides to that…..playing good teams, and NOT playing awful teams. USM has 18 games already against the RPI Top 50. On the flip side, the have played ONE game against a team outside the Top 200 - a midweek contest against #220 New Orleans. The next worst team was #160 UNA.

MSU, by contrast, has played a bunch of great teams, but also played NINE games against teams outside the Top 200. That shít matters. Really all you have to do for a very robust SOS is not play shítty teams. That’s it. There’s no grand conspiracy to the RPI. It’s simple math.
