Starkville High had 33 kids score 30 or higher on the ACT this year. That's pretty impressive.

Slow down there. I'm gonna need to find out how many took the ACT at Waynesboro before handing out wizard caps.

Good to see, there appears to be some momentum on getting area schools

Back on the right track. Very important

Probably not many. On a national level, there is only 1 school in north MS that's even decent (Tupelo HS), not counting MSMS. I live close to Milton HS (public) in GA and they produced more national merit semi finalist last year than the entire state of MS.

FYI, my wife is a director of admittance at a university so she has access to all the numbers.

Most schools in Ga use the SAT instead of ACT. Not sure how many were above 30 when I went to shs but it was several 30 something years ago

Mississippi's educational issue could be helped immensely if would take sports out of the educational system. I see the value in sports but we have allowed too many coaches that weren't real teachers be in charge because we thought they are leader types. It takes more than a strong personality to run a school.

You need to know the material that you placed in charge of ruling. When we place a former coach as our principal or superintendent they just simply are not prepared for the roll. They don't value class time the same as an educator, nor have they studied best practices. Their passion was a sport that they studied inside and out for their entire life but an educators life's passion was to study what it takes to educate just as passionately.

We put a coach in charge and he will have no clue that putting all the smart kids in one class together is bad or that it takes a classroom several minutes to get back on track after just one interruption, let alone 5 or 6 in one hour. They just don't know because education has not been their passion, football was and we put them in charge of our schools.

I am an advocate of having sports be a completely separated system like New York, but I don't see that happening. At least we should get the coaches out of being in charge of schools and make sure a life long educator is put in charge instead a life long player of games.

Just curious, but what is that based on? All the rankings I've seen have DeSoto Central and Lewisburg ranked ahead. As well as slightly higher average ACT scores.

You are correct. They are both good schools. For some reason, I incorrectly consider OB, HL, and Southhaven part of Memphis, TN.

That cannot be true as numerous people have come to this message board and have have insisted that the public school system here gets low ratings from experts like our state politicians. ***

Northpoint had 17 kids score over 30 last year but I'm not sure about this year. That's decent for a small private school and I think their average ACT score is a 26.

All the rankings I see have Tupelo behind several of the Coast schools and North Mississippi/South Memphis schools and possibly Clinton.

ETA: Looking at the state rankings and general google searches and Tupelo is way down the list of state rankings and not showing up on any of the other lists. What is causing that? Surely Tupelo high isn't really outside of the top 15-20 high schools is it?

Those horrible** state politicians who kicked in $10m for partnership school?

Lots of good things going on in Starkville public schools, including the $30m partnership school being built on MSU's campus. Those "experts" made that a reality. Wish they would have done that in my child's district.

You're right. We have 3 A+ schools down here. Ocean Springs, Pass Christian and recently Long Beach. Don't know a lot about Long Beach, but Ocean Springs has some of the best resources in the state. Pass Christian has amazing teachers and administration district wide.

Lewisburg High School in DeSoto County has been number one in the state two years running in test scores.

Northpoint can either compete in TSSAA sports or they can be part of this conversation. They can't do both.

OHS had a lot too....

I know everyone on here is supposed to down play anything to do with Oxford, but I saw from some FB friends reposting last month that they had close to 80 or 90 kids score over 30 on the ACT from this school year. *shrug*

I find this thinking kind of funny.

so are you saying SA is keeping Starkville schools from being excellent? Or does Starkville need the SA students to be excellent?

I think Starkville has some excellent schools. I think they can be better but most schools can.

One last thing. Standardized testing and Washington DC pressure and involvement and the misguided thought of social passing when students can't and don't do the work are the reason for declining scores! I know my wife is a teacher and the biggest problem she has is not necessarily the quality of work but the lack of even attempting to complete the assignment

Curious why it is bad? AP classes are bad then?...or am i misunderstanding what you posted?

I could see if all the smart kids are in classes together, then all the dummies are together and that could be bad in a way...so is that what you mean?

That is a impressive HS in GA. According to to the link below in 2015 GA had 35,026 entrants, 454 semifinalist, SF as a % of the total entrants 1.3% and MS had 5,981 entrants, 136 semifinalist, SF as a % of the total entrants 2.3%. If 2015 was statistically similar to 2016 that would mean that Milton HS produced over 136 semifinalist which is 30% of the entire state of GA. WOW

Interestingly MS is 5th in percentage of entrants that become semifinalist.

Starkville is trying to squeeze twice as many students as they can effectively handle into a given space. Let's not act like it's all roses. They are understaffed and underbuilt for the recent influx. And "excellent" is a stretch, although I'm really excited about the apparent progress that's being made, and someone should be commended.
Still not a top tier school in the worst educational system in the country, however.

Shut down SA and you've got a damn good public school system in Starkville.

I hate how uninformed people act militant over this issue. The cold hard facts about Starvkille public is that they have an excellent AP program. They do a very good job of separating those students from the 80% of the non AP track that is a poor excuse of an adult daycare certificate program. Oktibbeha county in general has a severe demographic problem. You have university employees, a few other non university employees, and then everyone else is dirt poor. Over 65% of SPS students are on some sort of assistance program, which generally equates to students coming from a less than optimal family situation. So again, I give SPS big credit for catering to their high performing students. With that said, SA is an absolute necessity if you want to recruit industry and quality university employees. You could put all of SA into SPS and you wouldn't move the demographics (poverty or race) by even 5%.

How did the private schools score, lol?

I'm not sure if you mean any one in particular, but I believe Prep had around 60 to score above 30 with far fewer students. That's an awesome job by Starkville high, but the private schools are doing fine.

My calcs show it moving the needle from 32% white to 44% white.

And I never said they SHOULD do that. I just said it would help SPS become a good public school. But, that might not even matter. I know the reality of the situation.

My Daughter is the Debate and Speech coach at DeSoto Central. She just had two of her team win the NCFL National Championship in Louisville. She said they are the first ever from MS to do that.

When you consolidate a district you have to make room. Not a hard thing to decide but if you want to pretend they were being altruistic go right ahead. That school had to be built and Msu stepping up is what made it a reality.

Those 'experts' are the reason Mississippi is still a bottom feeder in the educational world. Or did you forget they are the same morons that still believe the voucher system would accomplish anything other than more torn down buildings and modernized segregation?

If assistance includes free or reduced lunch, that's not that high of a percentage. A lot of the good high schools are around 50-60% free or reduced lunch.
