In a lot of ways, the ole miss probation era was a big letdown right?
1. The penalties weren’t as bad as we thought they would or should have been.
2. We certainly didn’t capitalize on any of that. We were supposed to put our foot on their throat during this time and leave them behind, never to return.
Well we 17’ing blew that opportunity.
But the most important thing that we needed to happen did. More important than both of those two things, the investigation led to the firing of Hugh Freeze. Even though they were cheating (as if there is a program in the sec that doesn’t), we needed him gone. He was doing things there that haven’t been done before. He had them looking like the legit best team in the country at one point, and that wasn’t solely because they had the most talent that they cheated to get. It helped that he was a damn good coach.
Even though we are going to take the gamble and hire Napier, who hasn’t accomplished 1/100 of what Hud has over his career, I felt it was important to answer the question about why Hud didn’t get a job offer this year with a question. How many job offers did Freeze have when Ole Miss hired him, right before he took them on arguably their best run in modern program history?
I’m sure we can do worse than Billy Napier, but those of us who have closely observed Hud know that we are once again squandering an opportunity. I hope Napier has great success here. But I certainly don’t expect him to stay here if he does.
Cheers to Moorhead’s departure!
