In a lot of ways, the ole miss probation era was a big letdown right?

1. The penalties weren’t as bad as we thought they would or should have been.
2. We certainly didn’t capitalize on any of that. We were supposed to put our foot on their throat during this time and leave them behind, never to return.

Well we 17’ing blew that opportunity.

But the most important thing that we needed to happen did. More important than both of those two things, the investigation led to the firing of Hugh Freeze. Even though they were cheating (as if there is a program in the sec that doesn’t), we needed him gone. He was doing things there that haven’t been done before. He had them looking like the legit best team in the country at one point, and that wasn’t solely because they had the most talent that they cheated to get. It helped that he was a damn good coach.

Even though we are going to take the gamble and hire Napier, who hasn’t accomplished 1/100 of what Hud has over his career, I felt it was important to answer the question about why Hud didn’t get a job offer this year with a question. How many job offers did Freeze have when Ole Miss hired him, right before he took them on arguably their best run in modern program history?

I’m sure we can do worse than Billy Napier, but those of us who have closely observed Hud know that we are once again squandering an opportunity. I hope Napier has great success here. But I certainly don’t expect him to stay here if he does.

Cheers to Moorhead’s departure!

You want to hire a guy that had near 40 arrested players during his final two years, final three season were losing seasons, hired people that put his program on probation and knew these type of people were dirty to start with. This is the guy you want to hire over the guy who came in and had to clean up the mess and could win 11 games in year two?

I do. I want the guy that went 25-1 in his two years as a ms high school head coach. Won a National title as offensive coordinator at delta state. Won two gulf south conference championships at north Alabama. Took the shittiest job in America (Louisiana Lafayette) and raised millions to get them state of the art facilities and put them on the map, making them a job that a some guy named Billy Napier would actually consider taking. Took them to their first bowl game ever (in his first year) Then another. Then another. Then more. Then won the Sunbelt Conference Championship. People forget how ****** that program was before he got there. I want the guy who called the plays against auburn last year, the one time our offense looked worth a 17, and was responsible for Mullen’s best recruiting class during his time in Starkville. I want the guy that took the only job in America worse than UL, Austin Peay. He was the only coach in his conference in the preseason that voted that Austin Peay would win their first conference championship in program history. Then he did something crazy, won their first conference championship in program history (year one....again), went deep into the playoffs, beat ranked teams back to back (another first) and was named OVC coach of the year. I want the guy who got the 17 out of Starkville because he knew that Moorhead was a 17ing idiot. I want the guy who has coached, coached with, or played with, every high school coach in the state. Wouldn’t bother me at all to have the guy who was the number 1 recruiter in America for 8 weeks last year according to rivals, Yea, I wouldn’t mind hiring a coach that’s 131-64, not counting 22 vacated wins, (Mullen is 89-51) Sure i wouldn’t mind a guy who is a huge state fan that would never leave the job at State.

But the more i think about it, you’re right. Give me the guy with one successful season who will bolt at the first opportunity. And while we’re at it, let’s give all the credit of what Hud did this year to Will Healy, who has also never done any of that ****, and make him our number two candidate.

I am not sure if you convinced me or not, but you should definitely apply to be Hud's agent.

And I thought you were going to suggest he should apply to be head coach at Winston Academy. **

I think locking down the winningest record in the history of MS High School football at age 29 will suffice for his contributions to Winston Academy. Besides, the red machine has their guy. After a failed experiment with Junior Graham, famed MS public school state championship coach who won about three games over two years at Winston (hell of a guy though, and don’t let the private school years tarnish his legacy), Winston hired Pat Byrd, who managed to rack up a 33-62 record at Saltillo, making this hire a no brainer. And because of his time as an assistant coach at Louisville High during the Bobby Hall years (The most legendary coach in MS High School history who’s son played qb for Hudspeth and who Hudspeth introduced to coaching,), he was an obvious shoe in for the job (much like Grantham is for the state job because he was here under Mullen, one of us man). In a long term program building kind of way, Byrd led the patriots to two wins in his first year, but more impressively managed to completely destroy the D1 quality football facilities that Hud literally raised hundreds of thousands for and built during his tenure at Winston and make them look like a venue primed for a filming of the hit show, hoarders. But year two came friends, and boy did Byrd deliver....2019 came along and Winston was poised to make yet another run, similar to the Hudspeth era. The parents knew it, and so did the kids, because the parents told them. And low and behold, the big red machine did the unthinkable, and earned a playoff birth after going 3-7 in regular season play. It was like the 1998 undefeated season all over again. It was off the chain. Natchez Cathedral would be the first victim to face the 3-7 Patriots in their quest for a 2A State Championship and in true Winston form, the Patriots showed up poised and ready to play, and in one of the closest losses for the 3-7 Patriots of the entire season, their championship dreams slipped through their fingertips after a last minute score jolted the underdog 8-4 Natchez Cathedral to a 44-18 win.

People want to poke fun at Academy ball, and rightfully so, which is why these public school
Coaches know that they can coach their way to championships before winning 4 games over two years.

So yes by all means, continue making light of Hudspeths 25-1 tenure there

So you want to pass on a coach because you fear he might leave? That would meaning we're winning.Billy Napier was on top 5 recruiter list by Rivals and 247 at two different programs.Hud has never done that.If you really believe that Moorhead gave up play calling at any point since he has been here then you haven't been keeping up.Helping with a gameplan isn't the same as calling the plays,Moorhead has called the plays every game he has been on campus. The only Hud recruits last class were Pruitt,Purvis and Harris so we're not talking about pulling major recruits when he was here.Hud had nothing to do with the 2009 class.Hud is an upgrade from Moorhead ,that's not saying much. He'd get himself fired in two years at an SEC program and have the program in NCAA trouble.

Hiring a guy that ran his last SBC job into the ground in three years, helped put them on probation and had close to 40 players arrested in two years is something that I don't even think a clueless AD like Cohen would do.Napier cleaned up a mess that he found ULL in and might very well win 11 games in his second season.

Yes, when there is a better coach available who won’t leave, i do want to pass on a lesser one who will. But actually, I don’t want to pass on Napier at all. The fact that he’s getting an offer before Hud is laughable to me. The fact that Moorhead got an offer before Hud was laughable to me as well. Crazy how that worked out ain’t it. We shouldn’t have to pass on him. He shouldn’t be offered. At this point, this should be Hudspeth’s job. There is literally no more of an obvious correct choice than Mark Hudspeth. But we’d rather circle the globe to the East to make the wrong hire than take one step to the west to make the right one. So be it. Hail state.

Hud isn't a better coach. You're in the Hud cult not going to change your mind ,nor care to do that.Hud was 5-7 and .500 in the Sun Belt and fired by ULL,that's why he wasn't offered.

Bravo! Very nice trolling.

Junior only coached Winston for a season though. He’s doing much better at Winona Christian.

Listen bro, I’m not trying to ruffle any feathers here. I laid down last night and thought about it, and you are exactly right. The Hud cult is wrong. It took me literally writing down the stats to see what you’re saying.

Head coaching experience:
Napier (the better coach) 2 years.
Hudspeth- 15 years

Napier wins!!! Totally ready for an SEC west job. He turned down about 7 offers this year waiting for ours.

Conference or division championships:
Napier (the better coach): 1
Hudspeth: 5 (two of these were first time ever at their respective schools)

Napier wins again, Hud cult is delusional.

Coach of the year:
Napier (The better coach) 1, year two of sunbelt.
Hudspeth 3, year 1 of the Ohio valley conference and 2 years in the gulf
South conference.

Hud 3 to Napier 1- Gimme Napier for
The win.

*not disrespecting Napier here. But according to the poster he is a better coach than hud, who has more conference coach of the year awards than Napier has years of experience. This is kinda like bragging that you have more pubic hair than an infant.

Bowl record
Napier (the better coach) 0-1
Hudspeth 4-1
A landslide win for Napier

Overall head coaching record
Napier (the better coach) 17-10
Hudspeth: 131-64 plus 22 wins vacated

Let’s not forget that Napier is from
Chatsworth Georgia and played QB for
Furman University in Greenville, SC is obviously a gigantic recruiting advantage over Hud, who is from Louisville and played QB at Delta State.

Couple other noteables, yes, hud was let go By UL. Completely lost the program after some NCAA problems that he was personally found to not be responsible for. This was after he did quite a bit for that program.

What did Napier do for Clemson before being fired by Dabo? He was recruiting coordinator the year that Bowden resigned mid-season.

Man I feel dumb. Napier is the better coach by a mile.

I'm specifically referring to your Winston Academy commentary. My now-defunct alma mater used to be in the same district.

What Napier has going for him, that Hud doesn't, is that he's seen the most successful football program in history up close. Hudspeth's P5 experience is all at MSU (which isn't terrible, he got 2 years with Mullen and 1 year seeing what NOT to do with Moorhead). If Napier really really wants to come here, fine, but I don't see that happening, we'd have to throw big money at him and he's not worth that yet.

I'd honestly never heard of Napier until this season, mainly after the Bears started massaging his nuts. I'm not sold on him, think he's still green and a gamble and not sure we can gamble AGAIN. But, I definitely don't want Hud.
