So what is this team's ceiling?

The ceiling - Final Four. The Floor winning the first round of the tournament. Most likely getting to the sweet 16.

We just beat 2 really solid teams without most likely our 2nd best player for the entirety of 1 game and the majority of another. Chit Chat can create her own shot - facilitate get in the lane - provide 3 point shooting (probably our 2nd best 3 point shooter right now). She would have been a major difference maker in that final 8 minutes when they began to double the post. My biggest worry was we would fall apart against a team with strong defensive effort without Chit Chat. Honestly Stremlow played incredibly well filling in for her.

We have 6 solid players within our system - Heiden, Chit Chat, Stuelke, McCabe, Stremlow and Kylie.

The ceiling depends on 3 bench players and 1 starter-

1. Hays - against elite or very good C's Hays is still a work in progress. No different than Heiden last year. Her limitations show up and just lack of experience. We have seen she can score and has moves against lower competition. That is good. It shows she has the skills to continue to develop into an a very good or elite C at this level. She just needs to continue to work at it.

2. Rodriguez - Watching her is like being on a roller coaster. Here is my take - outside of maybe Heiden she has a higher ceiling than anyone else on the court. Her BB IQ however is poor. She has an outside shot, she has excellent handles, and she can dribble drive at will. She can become a ball hog, she doesn't give consistent effort on defense and rebounding (but has the ability) and gets herself into trouble by being out of control. All correctable things. Assuming you can keep her motivated, she will be a key cog potentially by the end of the year and most certainly in the next 2.

3. Deal - You could put Mallegni or Houston - but they are a tad repetitive and neutralize each other. We have enough depth at the post positions. We could utilize more depth at the guard position and beyond McCabe - in my limited viewing she has the best stroke from 3. She does not have the quickness currently. The defense has improved some since the initial game and she does not appear to be as out of control as she was the initial games. She has figured out something that works with driving to the lane. Personally I would scrap the euro step for now and re-implement and just drive to the lane hard. Try to get a foul and go with it. She is willing to create her shot and has more potential at finishing than Kylie or McCabe. She can still be an extremely good offensive threat and passer. The defense has to be passable.

Starter - McCabe - McCabe has been our 3rd best player this season in my opinion. the defense - good shooting (not great for her), decent handles, clutch plays and willing to drive more. I really want McCabe to become more aggressive on the offensive end. The last 2 games I have see 3 drives to the lane. She needs to continue to do this. I still want her to work on a mid range game and some 1 on 1 game of some sort. If she can become a poor mans Lucy Olsen - this teams ceiling jumps quite a bit. There have been very few mistakes from her this year and she is showing more leadership and confidence.

You need 1 of McCabe or Deal to really blossom as an offensive threat to balance this team to reach its potential in my opinion. The ceiling is still incredibly high. You do need Chit Chat to get healthy and remain healthy but that goes without saying.
I just want to highlight this thread. I think as of right now I will change to elite 8.

The primary reason is we have lost some upside with losing Rodriguez. We have to acknowledge she is done for the season.

1. Hays is really struggling to find her footing against better competition. She has completely lost her confidence. I do anticipate her to get over the hump similar to Heiden. Both her and Heiden need to do a better job of staying out of foul trouble.

2. Deal is really starting to get in a groove. She is improving the offensive capabilities and options we have on the guard side.

3. McCabes shot has struggle . . . offsetting that is Kylie finding her stroke. McCabe is exerting so much more energy on the defensive side I think she is more tired and right now is just in a funk.

I had another post where I said of the lower players that I was impressed with Levin and wouldn't be surprised if she carved out a role. She has. She is that extra depth piece if we have guard foul trouble or injury. She is an excellent defender.

McCabe struggles because obviously the scouting report is to make her put the ball on the floor. She’s getting so few open looks that she not getting her feet set on half her shots. When she actually has time she’s lethal as we know but that’s just rare anymore. They know she can’t or won’t drive past anyone and get to the hoop. That’s why we really need Deal to continue her climb. As we saw last night she can score at all levels. She clearly doesn’t have McCabe’s experience and McCabe has certainly turned into a pretty solid defender. But to play a sweet 16 game against an athletic team I think we need what Deal can bring. Obviously way more upside but question being can she continue it.

Round of eight.

but any team with final four hopes would choose to be a 16 seed if the alternative was being in UConns bracket.

At a minimum you want to be a top 4 seed to get 2 home games against lower ranked opponents. Best case you have a top 3 seed as that allows you to reach the Elite 8 without facing any top seeds.

Chit Chat turns it over at a higher % rate than Lucy did.
Lucy could also go get a bucket when needed. Emily might if she gets healthy. We need a person when the shot clock gets down they can create .

I loved Lucy. She was not a great scorer/ shooter with an EFG% of 49%. Chit chat can drive and get a bucket or step back for a 3. She has an EFG% of 58%. Stremlow can also drive and shoot 3's. She has an EFG% of 63%. Deal showed last night that she has that capability. I think the guard situation is fine and only going to get better as these 2 sophomores and freshman continue to mature.

Let us not forget that Lucy carried a huge load for the team last year. I believe more was expected and demanded from her. For example, when the clock ran down the ball always seemed to be in Lucy’s hands. That some times resulted in a tough shot skewing stats. I don’t disagree about the potential of our young guards I’m just saying.

Gotta carve out something in the B1G tourney to get a #3 seed for the NCAA.

The top 5/6 teams in the country are locked in, so you can't be a 4/5 seed.

Right now, I'd say only UCLA/Maryland/Michigan are clearly above Iowa in conference.
So...Elite 8 is the ceiling.

Bump - Man none of my bench players I called out stepped up. Here is what did happen, Chit Chat became the offensive general, Stuelke and Heiden destroy the low post - Stremlow and Houston are the energizer bunnies, and Kylie is glue to the other teams offensive player. I feel we are 1 player short right now. Definitely a guard short, but they are making it work.
