Totally -- if there's someone like me, there's another out there who is a mirror.

I think you're right for the vast majority of situations where public opinions don't matter. However, given Pope's history and connection to the program, there may be the perception that it matters, even if it's not the case in reality.
I think for me, his connection and history matter but they don’t:

Regarding how I treat him, it matters. I don’t mind joking about him in a good hearted way, but I don’t like completely burying the guy on a personal or degrading level because of his history and connection to the program.

As far as his job performance, I’m not the kind of person who cares what kind of person he is. I don’t care about moral victories or standing for the “right values.” Part of that is that I try to be honest about things. We are not the good guys in CBB history. And yet, I still proudly point to all eight of those titles. If I really didn’t think Pope has it in him to live up to the expectations, I wouldn’t want him here. I still expect a hell of a year three. If there isn’t one, I’ll want him gone. Mind you, I have no control over it so it’s just my preferences and I recognize it as such. But I want to win…badly.

Also, for a point of clarity, the parts I care about when it comes to “doing the right things” is only so far is it helps get the right players and right coaches here for winning. Straightforward.

To keep refreshing rupp rafters everyday and there’s nothing good ever!
Use to be great seeing big time commitments and being so excited for next year. Always loved the recruiting season better than the regular season. Kentucky basketball please come back!
You’re at the wrong place. Go to the Arkansas message board if you want good recruiting news

I’d wager to bet my standards are pretty high compared to most. I don’t think the following things have to be mutually exclusive:

- Note that last season was bad, perhaps very bad by historic Kentucky standards.

- Note that his first season, despite some blemishes, was at minimum, above average overall by Kentucky standards.

- Note that Pope has failed in many regards as the captain of the ship: roster construction, closing on deals, assessing fit, roster management, rotation patterns, game preparation etc.

- Note that Pope has shown glimpses of excellent coaching, made great halftime adjustments, created a whole greater than the sum of its parts, had a tendency to overperform in certain scenarios, crafted effective offensive systems, etc.

Not everyone who has hope has it due to ignorance or defiance.

If Pope fails, we move on to the next.

Pope's first year was not above average. It was average.
  • Kentucky finished 12th in the AP poll. In 78 years of the AP poll, Kentucky finished better than 12th 47 times (60% of the time).
  • Kentucky was a 3-seed in the tournament. In 47 NCAA tournaments in the seeding era, Kentucky has been a 3-seed or better 26 times (55% of the time) and a 2-seed or better 21 times (45% of the time).
  • Kentucky made the sweet sixteen. In 76 years of the tournament having 16+ teams, Kentucky has made the sweet sixteen 46 times (61% of the time). They've advanced past the sweet sixteen 34 times (45% of the time).
  • Kentucky has won the SEC regular season 50 of 94 years (53% of the time).
  • Kentucky has won 31 of 65 SEC tournaments (48% of the time).

Some fans can’t accept that we’re probably middle of the pack next year. Like they refuse to accept it. I guess they realize that being middle of the pack 3 years in a row probably dooms CMP. But what can you do? This is Kentucky. Being a lower half SEC team isn’t acceptable here.

At the very least I wish these guys would admit that they don’t mind keeping CMP around, even if it means we’ll never win the SEC again with him. Just admit you prefer the idea with sticking with our current coach over wins and success.
WAY too many people on here (maybe you included) equate saying Pope isn’t getting fired after year 2 with wanting Pope long term. Just because some people realize that UK won’t fire a coach who won games in his first two NCAA tourneys doesn’t mean those same people want Pope forever.

Firing Pope after his second year, no matter how disappointing it was, wasn’t in the cards. If he does the same in year 3, he’s probably gone. But again, admitting that UK won’t be firing him doesn’t mean you want him to be UK’s long-term coach.

This is an amazing post right here.

I’ll let you know that I do not use the same methodology when determining average seasons for Kentucky basketball but I’m very impressed by your work here.

Not only was your methodology spelled out clearly, you efficiently and effectively provided a very persuasive argument.

Your argument is so good that I really don’t have a retort. One of the best posts I’ve seen on this site. Well done, sir.

Not one of those teams started the beginning of the year with zero players
