Our SF position next year is as follows:
Kam/Hawthorne and then Noah.

Maybe Stokes.

Even without Stokes, we've got two great options at the wing and a third guy who's got experience in the system.

I don't see why we'd go after any portal SFs, tbh.
100%. Hawthorne is gonna be a surprise to most of us. He is so fluid. Nice touch. Has hops. I just hope he put in some muscle.

I'm standing my ground. I like Kam and I think Hawthorne will do well if he's put on any weight whatsoever.

Just my 2¢, I'm sure the board will have some strong opinions in response to mine lol.
I agree. My guess is you know more about UK basketball than 100% of the doomsayers!!

Geez. You are a slow learner apparently.

We are UK. We should have one of the best dudes at every position. Not a guy who wouldn’t even start at the majority of SEC schools. Yes, the majority of SEC schools. I am tired of the loser’s mentality, settling for mediocrity here!
Because having a team of seven NBA all-stars was winning us so many titles. 😂

Uh, it certainly worked out better than the last half decade. You actually want less talent? You actually want less talent? lol. The team is headed for straight NIT - trash. But keep making your logical fallacies and your rationalizations.

Simply put, my point was KW is exceptionally one dimensional, he’s a decent shooter outside of that aspect, I’ve seen next to nothing from him. He can’t drive, he’s not an elite athlete, can‘t play in the post at all effectively, he doesn’t pass off and set up others well, he’s at best a top 40 SF in CBB, IMO.

He was becoming very effective on back door cuts right about the time he got hurt. I don’t think he’s going to be one dimensional. It took him time but he realized he could use his size and finish on cuts and that can be a major weapon this year. His finishing numbers were really good last year.

I actually feel better about Stokes now than I did before. If a player has no interest he doesn’t fly from Portland to Lexington. I think he comes to UK or stays at the mothership and goes to Oregon. I don’t buy the excuse of meeting coaching staff.
Oregon will allow him to be the KOBE he wants to be & NIKE will keep him happy with unlimited access to shoe & apparel designers. Eugene is an epic college town & he has chosen the West Coast 3 times already in his High School career.

Let’s hope that continues, the tools are there.

I agree with this. I like being able to use Kam at the 4. Just have to see what other pieces we have to slot in at the 3 when he’s on the court.
UK got killed on the boards this year. I see it as even worse next year unless we get Freeman.

There is no budget limit for Pope. He can commit to pay whatever is needed.

He can pay Stokes $10 mil and have plenty of money left. And he should. His job is counting on it.

I hope some of y’all are right about KW. But he was supposedly rounding into form when he got hurt. OK, that’s his form. The last 3 games he played before he got hurt and had rounded into form he got 3 rounds. Not 3 per game, 3.

On a bad rebounding team. It’s not like there was an Oscar out there getting them all and no extras to be found.

That’s our 3 or 4?

Pope needs to just ask Stokes point blank, “how much to play for UK?”.

Then pay it.
That’s an interesting point you make about Kam’a rebounding. I went back and looked and his defensive rebounding % was third among the starters when he was a freshman at Tulane. Behind the 2 bigs, and ahead of the smaller guards.

For whatever reason his defensive rebounding rate was lower at UK as a Sophomore than it was at Tulane as a freshman, but his offensive rebounding rate was a little higher. Maybe partially scheme? Switching on the perimeter? Leaking out to fast break?

Would be nice to see our whole team step up on the boards.

Totally agree. Some posters feel like it's also about who pays him the most, well, he's already signed with Nike & they're right there in Oregon (Phil Knight)

I think he's underrated. You think he's overrated.

Probably means he's overrated knowing my track record lol.
I like Kam, he was starting to play really well before he broke his foot. I like his 3 point shot, I think that will only get better. I saw him do this one time last season, he pump faked a corner 3, drove by his defender & dunked. I'd like for him to do more of this & expand his game a little. Like Philstat said a few posts back, Stokes will go inside & bang, at 6'8" Kam should be able to do some of that.

His handle isn’t good enough to be a dependable slasher, but an occasional back cut can make a world of difference.

I would like McNeil to be added and fill some of that SF spot if Stokes isn't coming. You would have to have him, Diallo, and Wilkins on the floor at the same time if we get him too. Plus, they are a taller backcourt in general.

Lastly, if it's just KW, Hawthorne, and Noah at SF, that's ok too, as long as we have a couple elite PFs like Freeman and Rancik. Kam will get a lot of points just off kick outs, same with Moreno, off of dive and dishes.
Moreno needs to get his hands stronger for lobs on drives by Wilkins & Zoom.

I was busy most of the day, but just now finished catching up on the last 2 pages of this thread. Not trying to sing kumbahya (sic), but the quality participation by such a large number of folks kinda blew me away. So very many civil, well-thought-out points and counterpoints ... had me more encouraged about team potential and broadened my perspectives on how to best fill needs to complete the roster for an improved, more competitive team.

This kind of thread, if it became the typical here, with civil, thoughtful, critical comments by everyone in the kindred spirit of what's best for the program ... would help eliminate criticisms by outsiders of BBN as being unreasonable, boorish folks ... and quickly help to earn BBN the reputation of being a serious, civil, devout and HIGHLY-KNOWLEDGEABLE fan base !!! Thanks to everyone who posted here ... I've enjoyed and learned from your comments. GO CATS !!!

In the portal, there are only two notable SFs remaining Juke Harris and LeJuan Watts, it’s looking we aren’t going to get Stokes, I really hope MP goes fully in on trying to get Watts, he would compliment KW well. Juke will likely be drafted.
If the NCAA rules change goes into effect granting everyone 5 years, you may have a few hundred 5th year senior small forwards to choose from. Assuming you haven't blown your NIL budget by overpaying for guys you've already pulled from the portal.

Personally I'm hoping to see Purdue's Braden Smith become available at point guard, and nobody having enough money and a starting spot to offer him.

If it's money Diallo will be far cheaper in the long run I still want Terrance Hill Jr. over both of them.

I'm curious to how he doesn't know already what the Kentucky staff's plan is for hin.

Pope has trouble connecting with players. That's the core of the problem. He has grand schemes but he can't get anyone to buy in. And if you can't reach your players then you aren't going to be a successful coach.

I think you have to look at it collectively. Is Zoom/Wilkins/Kam better than DA/Chandler/Oweh?

I think it probably is, but we are a long way from knowing for sure.

I think you can argue that Kam is a more talented piece than Oweh. Longer frame. Better shooter. Much less ball dominant.

But ultimately it’s about how the pieces fit together. I think we are well on our way to having a better starting 5 than last year. Need to see what we do at the 4.

I think he's underrated. You think he's overrated.

I’ve said in other threads in the past, and I will add here…

I think the single best thing Kam could do to increase his draft and earning potential is work on his handles non-stop before the season. IF he could develop a reliable handle that allows him to attack off the bounce with any consistency at all, he would be lethal with his length and perimeter shooting ability.

As he is right now, if Stokes commits, I think Kam COULD back up both the SF and the 2 (if Stokes is on the floor at the 3 for extra ball handling/attacking the lane).

I could also see him at the 3 with Stokes at the 4 if playing with a small ball lineup. That would allow switching defensively on everything in the 1-4 positions with Diallo/Wilkins/Stokes/Kam.
