I am debating to myself if I am disappointed or surprised. I enjoy it when we bring in a talented freshmen like Williams but I also like to witness the development of a player like SKJ as he becomes an upper classman. So that disappoints me. But was SKJ going to improve his game to a point he would crack the starting lineup. Probably not so he decides to leave. Either way I do not blame Coach Cal for this. He can't stop recruiting just to save a spot for someone who has not earned it. SKJ had two years and failed to average more than 15 minutes a game. His stats are anemic. That is on him, not Cal. Good luck SKJ at your new home.

It's a negative for the player, not really for the coach or program. If that's the attitude of the player, is it not best for the school and team that they move on?

I dont know all of the aspects into SKJ transferring.

I will say if it is based solely on not wanting to compete for a spot then I can't pat him on the back and wish him well.

The bright side of things, perhaps he knows that PJ, JV and WG will return. That is a bunch of talent at the 4/5 spots along with Richards and EJ.

So thats good. But SKJ is a junior and should be ready for that battle.... smh.

Our #1 Rival Duke has had 10 transfers since Cal has been here. We have had 5 1/2. (Sorry, I'm not sure I'll ever get over the Harrow saga)

No way anyone can convince me Richards deserved the number of minutes he got compared to what SKJ got. I think Cal even realized this late in the season. SKJ would have been very valuable next season. Losing him hurts the team.

I fail to see what the issue is then using your example. Considering SKJ was giving less statistically than Richards who is a year less eligibility wise what makes you think SKJ would do more his junior year? At no time in his career has SKJ come close to showing the promise and game Richards showed early in the year. Of course that was against lesser talent but he atleast showed it.

Certainly not Dodson, Poole or Harrow.

Wiltjer could shoot but couldn't play defense for ****.

Lee helped us out in the Michigan game, but beyond that, wasn't a threat. He was more of a luxury piece. Just an athlete.

Matthews, yes. This is the one transfer that I hated. Dude is a baller.

Wynyard, not sure why he was ever on the team.

SKJ, we'll see. But he isn't exactly an All-American candidate.

Only because Cal started playing SKJ more during and after the SEC-T. Richards was getting the majority of those minutes up till then. BTW, that 14.7 that Richards was averaging was about twice what he deserved.

Maybe you've never played sports before. Everyone wants to be a starter. Coaches however BS everyone who comes off the bench into thinking that they are the 6th man starter...or that the 9th batter is just the additional leadoff batter or countless other coach-speak nonsense to make the reserves feel good about not starting.

Certainly we can all say...it aint who starts...its who finishes.... But that is game to game dependent on a lot of factors. At least, in this case, Richards started over a couple guys who were better than he is. Wenyan Gabriel first of all and then at times SKJ. Richards started IMO in order to create the youngest starting lineup in the country and to create that narrative. That narrative feeds the exit door too when you are a lightly used soph.

Yep, and whether some fans think SKJ was "better" or not, there's no question that Richards was a lot more productive in those minutes. He scored more, on a better shooting % (FG and FT), he had more rebounds and blocks by a very wide margin, and he turned the ball over and fouled at almost the exact same rate.
