Sign up below to send a message to Taylor. Since you don't know the personal viewpoint of this Board member with regards to Greg Schiano and the cost of his hiring, I suggest that you focus on indirect benefits of hiring GS for the university, in addition to opportunity costs of not hiring him.

For example:
-decline in endowment due to loss of donors
-decline in USNews&World Report ranking because of loss of donors
-decline in student connection to RU due to a wasteland of a football team
-decline in the RU brand
-decline in number of applications to undergrad programs
-decline in revenue generated by the football program
-other candidates would require less but would likely be replaced in 4 years when the average salary for a subsequent coach would be higher than GS current demands
-there is a prestige element to being part of the Big 10 academically. Like it or not, inclusion in the Big 10 is predicated by a very large investment in football

I will also personally add an anecdote that "going to RU for football games has served as a touchstone to my time as student here. I had brought my young kids here, their friends and the friends' parents for game. That exposure to the campus has had a multiplier effect to another generation and to my personal network of friends. That being said, I have not gone to a RU game this year and will not go to another game if GS isn't hired."

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your time and dedication to Rutgers University as a member of the Board of Governors.

I am writing you in support of Greg Schiano's candidacy for RU Football's head coach.

While Rutgers' mandate, first and foremost, is to provide a world-class college education for NJ's students, it is also important to maintain a positive brand for the university and to foment a unifying bond for current, past and future students. One way to do so is through the shared experience of rooting for a team. It keeps alumni coming back to campus; bringing their kids and friends. It allows a school to put it's best foot forward to a greater network of donors, prospective students and community supporters.

Inclusion in the Big Ten Conference brings academic prestige and collaboration. For better or worse, it comes with a difficult decision allocating a significant amount of resources to be competitive in athletics. That includes significant outlays for the football program.

In the past few days, it has been reported that negotiations with Greg Schiano have fallen through either because they have not been handled in good faith by the Athletic Director or because of the large ask of Schiano's contract and requisite facility improvements.

While I don't know the full economic pressures on the university, I do know that the furor over the apparent rejection of Schiano's candidacy is leaving Rutgers with a difficult decision. Not hiring Schiano has resulted in:

-a great outcry in donors who refuse to donate further to this university. Count me in this group.
-a great outcry in supporters of Rutgers football who refuse to go to Rutgers football games in the future. Count me in this group. I often take my kids, their friends and their parents (who didn't attend RU) to the games. I won't anymore


The impact of this decision may have further downstream impacts, including:
-decreased endowment
-negatively impacted school pride and on-campus experience due to a bad football program
-fewer undergrad applicants due to the image of Rutgers athletics relative to their peers

-a drop in RU school ranking due to decreased endowment, fewer applicants and lower school pride of students and alumni


While hiring a football coach at a high rate of pay doesn't guarantee success, Greg Schiano has a record of success here and seems uniquely qualified to not only turn around the team but to quell the revolt that is now impacting the university beyond athletics.

Moreover, hiring someone else may be just as expensive, with a lesser degree of certainty. We may then be forced to hire a subsequent replacement- at even a higher compensation level than Schiano is seeking!

Rutgers finds itself in a difficult situation today, November 29th. There is only one way to remedy this situation. Hire Greg Schaino
