Based upon just what I’ve seen from video clips, Shaq looks like a nice combination of length and strength, a 6’9”er with nice moves around the hoop and who can finish with both hands and run the floor.

Is that accurate? Who can add to this?

I see your post as accurate. Not a flashy player, but he should be efficient in what he does. He will also be a plus for team chemistry.

Watched game film on him, its tough to tell a lot of his offense game as the team offense was heavily guard oriented. He rarely gets touches in the post.

One thing I did notice that when a shot goes up he finds a man to box out, good sign for a rebounder at any level.

The earlier he gets on campus and starts working with Jay Young the better.

Pike is building good depth with a rotation of guys that will always give us something on the floor. We don't need one or two guys to play a ridiculous number of minutes.

Carter can play the 4 or the 5, but Pike has stated he expects more interior scoring/production on offence. I'd expect Duke/Doorson/Myles to get most of the minutes at the 5, so Gene and Carter have to get minutes somewhere. Just because everyone else is now playing 4 guards/wings and smaller lineups, doesn't mean we can't sometimes force the action and play with 2 bigs.

I think the idea of "4" vs "5" is going to get blurry next year, aside from Doorson. Doorson's a true 5, and can't really defend opposing 4s.... but Carter/Doucoure/Johnson can all likely play either position. Even Omoruyi played some 5 last year against smaller opponents.

Sure. Then why is Doorson staying for his 5th year, why is the 4* that started most of our games last year not transferring, and why did a kid with a chance at multiple Ivy League offers come to Rutgers from across the country and sit out a redshirt year while the coaches raved about him?

Carter had other offers and he was likely sold on the spit opening up at the 4.

The best players will play, but look at the makeup of the roster a little to inform the speculation

Against zone, EO has been a good foul-line decision maker and that seems like it will feed into SCs strengths.

We need a QB who can throw and basketball players who can shoot. Is it asking so much?:weary:

Not at all...

Baker can throw.
Mathis can throw
McConnel can throw.
Kiss can throw.

Thiam can shoot.
Kiiss can shoot.
Harper can shoot.
Mathis can shoot.

Now the great news imho...

Johnson can slam.
Doorson can slam.
Eugene can slam.
Carter can slam.
Duke can slam.

Doorson can block.
Duke can block.
Eugene can block.

Did I miss anyone?

Nuff said, I’m looking for an awesome year!
Dare I say ... take it to the banks? [banana]

And now the Really good news...

Coach Pikeill and staff can coach!!!

Can he shoot?

We dont really want him to shoot. Ideally he plays defense/rebounds in conference like Freeman could do against the OOC schedule and saves us 7 possessions a game by not taking shots he can’t consistently make.

When it comes to positions he’s really the new 5 man these days just like Eugene O is the new 4 man prototype.

I cannot wait for this season. Hopefully football restores this feeling this year(showing a competent offense)

With Duke, Johnson and Doorson on the roster - and most likely playing the 5 - I think Carter is destined to play the 4 along with Gene.

Although, if Pike shortens the rotation and Carter plays like a 4-Star JUCO recruit, maybe he plays some 5 as well, alongside Gene at the 4.

I hear what you are saying ...but I see it MUCH differently

See Eugene and Harper playing the four
See carter at the five.

See doucoure, doorson and Johnson backing up carter.

Yes it’s “small ball” but I think we still rebound well AND gets more offense on the floor.

We may finally have true competition for minutes at the center spot, which would be a great thing. In recent years, it's been too much "minutes by default" when guys are in foul trouble or trying to find someone (anyone) who could be productive.

Doorson - Finally, finally, finally healthy. Ended the season strong, has a full (healthy!) offseason to improve, and should come back ready to compete for minutes. 5th year bigs are a great luxury to have, because by then they've usually figured out body control and have more poise. Really looking forward to what he can do this year.

Doucoure - Got a ton of game speed reps last year, though I don't think he was really ready for them. Hopefully planted the seeds for this season - as he now *knows* what it takes to compete and stay on the floor in the Big Ten. Hoping to see him hit the weight room hard and bulk up a bit, to be a bit better banging bodies underneath. If he can make the same type of progression as Omoruyi did from frosh->soph year, that'd be huge.

Johnson - Tons of good noises coming out of practice and interviews, so hopes are high here. Pike said late in the season that he progressed much faster than expected, and could have been productive late in the year. Great talk about his passing ability, and he also has a touch more size than Doucoure/Carter. Hoping he comes out with guns blazing next year.

Carter - Highly regarded Juco PF, but definitely big enough to play C, too. If Omoruyi takes up the lion's share of minutes at the PF, and Carter is too talented to leave on the bench, he'll also be in the competition for minutes at the 5.

Omoruyi - Saw minutes at the 5 last year, but I doubt he'll see much there this year with the other four bigger guys battling for those 40 min (and without Freeman taking 25 min at the 4).

As much as I believe we will struggle with the 8 new faces this year trying to blend into a good unit with good chemistry , I am excited about the depth Coach has built and unlike in past years, the depth is 3 or 4 stars that appear on the initial preview will be able to compete in the Big 10. The battle for quality minutes from Eugene, Shaquille, Shaq, Duke and Myles up front will be exciting. The battle for quality minutes at the guard and 3 spot between Geo, Mathis, Mc Connell, Kiss, Issa and then the following year with Paul and Young makes one salivate that we are finally ready to move up the ranks and back in the post season in a couple of years. Next year will be partially frustrating but also exciting watching our young team grow. If Coach can get Hyatt for 2019, we will be back over 500 for many years going forward. We will finally be back where we were between 1974-1984 and then when any stupid *** Syracuse or Boston College fan tries to dismiss or ridicule the Rutgers name, we will gladly kick their *** off and on the court.

With so much more depth I wonder if Pike might want to push the pace more and maybe press to try to wear down other teams. I wonder how deep of a rotation we will see this season

I could also see docoure get some minutes at 4 if we go big. He showed some touch on an outside shot moreso than I think we expect from Carter

Everything starts with rebounding for this coach. I think Carter is straight up swap with Freeman. He will play with Eugene , but he will also be on the floor (as a 4) with one of Duke, Doorson and Myles too. Our guard depth is challenged next season, but we have decent depth at 4/5.
