Maybe but I'm concerned he is likely to be foul prone at this level.
Good add but we need to keep what we have up front and still add another contributor and that is still a hair thin for my tastes especially how all these guys pick up cheapies quickly.
Glad to get him on board but not surprised by the quick commit. Never have thought we would get McDaniels I think he stays out West. Would love to get Hurt to finish up the class.
A 6'9" big that can shoot and rebound.....you're not seeing what a guy like that can do for UK? Really?
He's no twig either, he's got a body that can bang in the paint at the P5 level, but he can also bring his defender out to the arch and make him defend.
He's a different player than Travis was, he could be better since he can shoot.
I have 239 likes to 203 post. Which is also a signifigantly higher comment to like ratio than what you have. So not only does it appear many disagree with you, the evidence indicates that you are the one whom brings less to this board. Just some food for thought.
He improved to me just by not causing fear when he was on the floor. He can now generally hold on to the ball and has evolving hook shots. He seemed to typically to be aware of the ball and wouldn't always have his back to the man with it.
He felt more like a raw freshman rather than completely lost.
Statistically, I hear you but he seemed to have a better feel (not good...better) which I think is important..
Still, it seemed he got dog housed again toward the end so who knows.
We still need another guy pretty bad, all our bigs lean foul prone and we get bad whistles.
If you say so. He looks like someone who is going to get his shot blocked quite a bit in the paint and be a defensive liability, which doesn't bode well for him getting much pt. He does look to be a threat from 3, so maybe he can fill a Wiltjer type role, which is fine, but IMO, we need a defensive player who can block shots, switch off if needed and get some nice lobs.
This guy has never played in a power 5 conference and had like 2 games against tournament teams this year, where he was good, but not really anything to write home about. Anybody who thinks this kid is Reid Travis like is setting thenselves up for dissapointment. Reid was a 5* or close to it out of HS and dominated the pac12 with big games against good teams and other big time players like Ayton.
Go watch what Scott Padgett did at UK. He was probably before your time but you will get a better understanding of what a player like this can do for your team.
In regards to his pick and roll defense he is an aggressive hedger, that was pretty much the policy at Bucknell, and he's pretty good at that. But as I mentioned in my post he would get a lot of unnecessary fouls. There were a lot of time where he made unnecessary contact on the hedge or do a stupid reach in foul to get a cheap foul.
He's a good defender in the post when he's not afraid of fouling. If he got a foul in the first few minutes of the game, you can tell that he changes how physical he is in order to avoid a second foul. But when he's not worried about foul trouble he's a very physical, solid defender.
He's never been a huge a shot blocker, that's not his specialty, but he can block shots. His physicality in the post is his asset, he doesn't generally get moved too much when he's not afraid of picking up fouls.
So in summary, he's a pretty solid pick and roll guy but he has a tendency to commit stupid fouls...hopefully he stops that. On the post, as long as he remains physical he's a good defender.
If he is playing the PF spot, we are in trouble. I think I can outrun this guy.
He will be a liability on defense at the 4.
More likely he is being brought in as a hybrid 5 so Monty can go to the 4.
Yeah, I realize that and nobody knows that we get either. Did I say anything about what we need or dont need? I was simply making a comment about what his commitment at this point in time could imply.
I think it would be even worse with him at the 5 defensivly. He looks slower and without much hops. I am imagining a lot of bigs going right over him and guards getting by or shooting over him at will. Hopefully he is Jorts 2.0 and makes me eat my words, but I just don't see it. Time will tell I guess. And it is at least another practice body and 5 fouls if nothing else.
Herro and Maxey playing together would be fun to watch. Maxey would take a lot of the defensive pressure off of Herro.
Bottom line- does the ball go through the basket? Never can have enough shooters. A 6'9" 38% 3 point shooter. Welcome!
He's a 4. I wouldn't say he's slow, he's pretty agile and athletic for a guy his size. But he's not a great jumper and thus not a big shot blocker. I wouldn't say bigs would go right over him that wasn't really a problem even when Bucknell played Power 5 schools. I think defensively he'll be a bruiser like Travis was.

He isn't the athlete or as talented as Scotty was (don't forget this was a guy thst worked himself into a first round pick that played near a decade in the NBA).
Relief big man, more a stretch four than a center but can give minutes there with his brawn.
Could be a rotation heavy starter aside Montgomery if Nick continues to struggle to develop.
Conditioning will be critical. If he can get in the best shape of his life it will maybe give him that extra level of confidence on both ends but especially on D to be more than a role player here.
He also reminds me at times of old "Mad Dog" Madsen from Standford a while back in demeanor which can go a long way toward over achieving, just bring the Charlie Hustle "lunchpail" mentality and go!
He ain't going to get a Standford whistle here though so playing under control while moving his feet with strict verticality is important for him to be able to stay in the floor and in the flow of games.
I worry he may be very foul prone if he doesn't make some strides but am happy to have him in the fold.
Grad Transfer U
Give me a grad transfer any day over some of the OADs we've had who do little, yet get drafted based on potential. At least grad transfers have shown they have some interest in their education (it's college, remember?)
Cal is not taking a grad transfer to sit. This kid will be a double digit scorer. Has tons of offensive skill.

I wish I had that kind of pull. If so, we would have had Jarret Allen and Jaxson Hayes when both begged to come here. I trust Cal, but to say he always makes the right choice wouldn't be accurate. I don't see it with this particular player. We are all allowed to have differing opinions on things you know? It's not the evil many of you have come to beleive.
Hopefully, but I'll have to see it first. I know how much Cal values good D and I question his potential impact on that end. I felt Herro may struggle defensively and he proved to be better than expected. So it is entirely possible.
Which power 5 teams? As far as I know they only played 2 this past year and they were TCU and OH St. He looked okay against both except for the turnovers, but they did also lose both and neither were that good of teams.
Just for the records, he is not a kid, addressing him as a young man is more proper.

Glad to have him. Seems like a good kid and the videos I watched showed a big guy with good hands and passing. I would never pass on that. Throw in the experience and this feels like a big win. Glad Cal got on it quick before anyone else could even give their spell.
Bucknell’s schedule didn’t have a ton of P5 teams last year. But his junior year he played 6 man minutes. He played UNC, Mich State, Maryland. His sophomore year he played well against Wake and Vandy (yes I know they both suck). He can hold his own. Can’t blame a guy for only playing the schedule Bucknell can get. Unfortunately a lot of P5 don’t like playing Bucknell. They generally have to play A10 teams because P5 schools don’t want to pay them to bring in an upset minded team.
They didn't play a lot of top competition, but they did only lose by 2 @Ohio St earlier in the year when Ohio ST was playing pretty well and was 9-1. He didn't have a great game, but 50% from 3, 2 of 4 and had 10 pts, 3 rebs and 1 assist.

Never said you were evil but you are a bit arrogant to already judge what a player can provide versus what a Hall of Fame coach feels that way layer can provide. Tell me.. what did Barrett and Cam really provide Duke versus how people anticipated they would perform on a team?
He made 41 of 108 3s for .38%. Not bad for a big guy. Looks like he was almost 54% from 2. .808 from the FT line in about a 100 attempts. He scored 491 points and had 262 rebounds this year. 37 assist and 33 blocks with 11 steals in 31 games. I'm sure Cal and the level of competition at our practices can push him even farther. I'm excited Cal landed him.
That game was a shame for Bucknell. He was in foul trouble the whole game, generally it was stupid fouls. I think he fouled out with like 6 minutes left. It was bad time management by our coach. If he was in the whole game they would have won. They had a look for 3 at the buzzer but missed, and thus lost by 2.
I remember Nate knocked out three of the teeth of one of the Wesson brothers that game diving for a lose ball...if you guys are worried about his physicality.
