Starkville just announced a delay until August 24. Seems weird they'd do that if they think the governor will be announcing something else in the next day or two.

That seems exceptionally stupid if they are really only planning on delaying until the 24th. An extra two to 2.5 weeks isn't going to move the needle. It will just ensure whatever problems they have are that much closer to cold and flu season.

Teachers are generally paid for 9 months. Does their salary increase by 33% if they work year round?

I'd mentioned previously that I thought private schools here generally followed the public schools' calendar. But, I understand that Randolph School, the top private college prep school, will be starting at the normal time. It'll be another good test case. At least one other private school, Madison Academy (a parochial school) is going to start Aug 5, according to their calendar. Public schools are delayed for at least 9 weeks countywide.

I learned to read from video games but most of what I played were text based back in the day. It's a good set up. Immersive, contextual, most games had voice overs for what was on the screen, etc., doesn't feel like work.

Your takes get worse by the day.

Gt17o with that.

The other poster claimed kids need to be in school in order to learn to read and that simply isn't accurate. Many learn to read prior to in class school. Many learn to read through nightly reading. Etc.
My take isn't the one thsts flawed here.

I also specifically said that some do need to be in school to learn to read due to a number of reasons.

Stick to locking threads in an inconsistent manner- its what you do well.

So, you're OK with depriving disadvantaged kids of a good education while more affluent ones continue to get a decent education because they're more likely to have the home support needed to make distance learning work. Got it. Never would have expected that from your virtue signaling internet persona though.

No im not ok with depriving disadvantaged kids of a good education.
You created that conclusion by taking what I posted and adding to it.

A poster claimed kids need to be in school to learn to read. I sarcastically said its a miracle thst any kids manage to learn to read outside of school. This is because the poster's claim is inaccurate.
I then acknowledge that some kids do need in person time to learn to read.

Its simply incorrect to claim kids need to be in a classroom to learn to read, so I corrected that claim.

Not sure why you then took my comments to another level, added onto them, and then ripped on me for the made up view you created.
That's actually funny when its laid out. How totally absurd.

I read that Brookhaven school district is delaying until August 31st. I guess my question would be why couldn't school districts who delay starting not start virtual until the end of August. Most of these districts are offering a virtual option anyway so they should have the infrastructure in place to deliver the lessons.

Shut the whole education system down for a year.... furlough everyone, give the tax payers their money back and let them use it for homeschool and daycare.

For our school district, you have to pick virtual full time or in person full time. I assume they are going to have teachers that teach only virtual and teachers that teach only in person, at least until they get to high enough grades where you have subject matter teachers and they can't easily move them around. . And that makes sense to me. Too much work to expect teachers to split their attention in one class. And also gives an opportunity to place some of the at risk teachers that are good in completely virtual teaching to make sure they don't quit for a year.

I agree. Every teacher on my wife's hall will have to account for online students as well as in-house students. It's just crazy.

What caused the change to start in August and get out in May?

I mentioned a couple of things in the post you replied to ... those being the inclusion of a week Fall break, and the desire to finish the first semester before Christmas break. Also, most take off a full week for Thanksgiving, where there used to be just a two day break (Thursday & Friday). All those add up to several days, thus pushing the start time back to August. Most schools outside the southeast still start after Labor Day, best I can tell.

Yep, typically close to 3 months off - most of June, and all of July and August.

So just more time off between sessions?

Year-round works OK since all schools now have air conditioning, but it wasn't practical back in the day. It might screw up summer vacation plans, but otherwise should be OK. Probably helps childcare in some way.

You can look at their calendar but they get I think 6 weeks in the summer, 3 weeks in the fall, 3 weeks in the spring, and two weeks for Christmas.

Any idea how often they test students? Or is it done only after symptoms are shown?

So Tater Tot makes no mention of State wide school closings today.

Pearl can go to school Monday and eat dirt.

Pascagoula-Gautier district delayed our opening earlier today from Aug 6 (next Thursday) but only until until Aug 10 (following Monday) to give the teachers more time (which sounds weird because they’ve had months) I was thinking the same as you, though - why not wait for an announcement from the Gov if you thought one was coming?

My wife was telling me that the districts statewide had to submit their reopening plans to Tate today. She thinks he’ll delay the openings after “reviewing” them this weekend “because a majority of the submitted plans are not sufficient”. But who the 17 knows...

Schools in Mississippi should never start until after Labor Day.

Forty years ago we started sometime during the week before Labor Day, had our first football game the Friday of that holiday weekend and got out in the middle of May or towards the end. We did not have a fall break or a week off for Thanksgiving.

This is another reason to consolidate school districts. Consolidate districts to align with MDOT Districts...

I’m not sure about 7 school districts for the entire state, but some consolidation is definitely needed.

I live in Jackson County and we have 4 separate districts (Jackson County, Moss Point, Pascagoula-Gautier, and Ocean Springs). Moss Point has already delayed their start until Sept.

I’m not the only mod, *******.

Are there more than 2? When a thread locks, it should show who locked.
You didn't say you didn't lock, I assumed you had.
My apologies there. Locking therads in an inconsistent manner is not what you do well.

School in Simpson Co is rumored to have had a couple sports teams exposed and have shut them down. HS football ain't going to happen IMO.

Granted, I'm 70 years old, but I'm positive my schools (elementary-high school) never started until after Labor Day. While I wasn't exceptionally bright, we had plenty of National Merit Finalists, so this later start did not seem to hurt our academic prowess.
