- Aidan Smith is the starting quarterback. Just kidding. The QB battle is ongoing.

- After playing superback this spring, Fitz thinks that Trent Goens will have a role on BOTH sides of the ball in the fall. That’s what Fitz told the media — even before Trent knew about it. I interviewed Trent shortly afterward and broke the news to him. You might want to talk to Fitz, I told him. But he’s happy contributing any way he can and enjoyed learning a new position as a fifth year senior.

- Tommy Carnifax is playing superback, too, and will probably assume Trey Klock’s role in the fall. (Short yardage, not necessarily touchdowns.) Coach Heffner expects Pugh, Goens, Carnifax, Charlie Mangieri and possibly freshman Thomas Gordon to all have roles.

- Hunter Johnson said that there’s been a little more media attention at Northwestern than there was at Clemson, believe it or not. He chalks it up to the Chicago market and it’s myriad media outlets.

- I asked Hunter to compare the facilities at Clemson and he said they’re both spectacular. “We’re spoiled,” he said. The biggest difference is that lots of teams share the facility here, while Clemson’s is football only. Does he miss the slide at Clemson? “I didn’t use the slide very much, believe it or not. That’s Coach Swinney’s thing.”

- There were TONS of former players, boosters, prospects and fans at practice today, which was open for a change. An old face I hadn’t seen in a while: the great Lee Gissendaner, still NU’s last Big Ten MVP.

Look for some stories to come from WildcatReport.

Thanks Lou. Is Carnifax also playing both ways or has he switched to offense permanently? Does Eshoo have any role at Superback, even if only as a blocker?

Good intel Lou. As for all the visitors, names; we need names! How about a list on the Rock?

Very happy to read that Tommy is healthy enough to contribute.

Lou, thanks for the great information. It is great to hear that Gissendaner was there! He will always be at the top of my Wildcat great players’ list. Did you get a chance to talk to him? He would be a really good subject for an in depth interview.

Nick Mangieri?

Doh! I obviously meant Charlie. I’ve done that before. His older brother is named Nick. NU recruited Nick but he went to Indiana.

Hey Lou, as to the quarterbacks other than Hunter, I thought Andrew Marty made some nice plays including TD pass that ended practice. He also showed some nice mobility back there for a big guy.

People never mention Eshoo when discussing the superback position. I’m wondering if he’s still on the team.

Does anybody know if any of the backup qbs have stepped up to overtake Green for the #2&#3 qbs?? I hope they have! They have had time to pickup/learn the offense. I would be very worrisome if they haven't in case our #1 gets beat up during the long season. I have high hopes especially for Marty.

Green is pretty darn good!
