- Aidan Smith is the starting quarterback. Just kidding. The QB battle is ongoing.
- After playing superback this spring, Fitz thinks that Trent Goens will have a role on BOTH sides of the ball in the fall. That’s what Fitz told the media — even before Trent knew about it. I interviewed Trent shortly afterward and broke the news to him. You might want to talk to Fitz, I told him. But he’s happy contributing any way he can and enjoyed learning a new position as a fifth year senior.
- Tommy Carnifax is playing superback, too, and will probably assume Trey Klock’s role in the fall. (Short yardage, not necessarily touchdowns.) Coach Heffner expects Pugh, Goens, Carnifax, Charlie Mangieri and possibly freshman Thomas Gordon to all have roles.
- Hunter Johnson said that there’s been a little more media attention at Northwestern than there was at Clemson, believe it or not. He chalks it up to the Chicago market and it’s myriad media outlets.
- I asked Hunter to compare the facilities at Clemson and he said they’re both spectacular. “We’re spoiled,” he said. The biggest difference is that lots of teams share the facility here, while Clemson’s is football only. Does he miss the slide at Clemson? “I didn’t use the slide very much, believe it or not. That’s Coach Swinney’s thing.”
- There were TONS of former players, boosters, prospects and fans at practice today, which was open for a change. An old face I hadn’t seen in a while: the great Lee Gissendaner, still NU’s last Big Ten MVP.
