I don't love the advanced metrics in college basketball, particularly defensively. There's so much intentional help (i.e. funneling players) that goes on defensively in the college game. Plus you have zone defenses, etc. I just don't love how statisticians have tried to moneyball the sport of basketball. I don't think college basketball in particular is a great vehicle for that sort of thing.

The NBA, maybe.

Just think their are better options. What happens if Wheeler is here and the SEC doesn’t change the rule? Why take that chance just go get a PG who can definitely play next season.

You start Wheeler and let Ty get his feet wet as the season moves along. Grady has to be the two guard and maybe Dontae at SF. We finally have some depth at each position thought I would like to see more talent among our bigs. Hope Cal doesn’t play favorites as he usually does and screw this up. We might have a chance at a decent season next year.
While id love to see this Cal hasnt shown any indication of playing Allen meaningful minutes, and that was with a team who desperately needed shooting. This years team had a hand picked, deeper back court, so until i literally see Allen getting meaningful minutes, im gonna assume he has the same role as last year.

Allen puts in the work this summer ball handling and Not being a total liability on D and he will see significant minutes this season

Define significant? Allen can conceivably play the 2 or 3. But at the 2 he’ll battle CJ, Tyty, Grady and possibly Mintz for Minutes. At the 3 he’ll battle Grady, Keion, and possibly Toppin, Hopkins and CJ as well. IMO i dont see a scenario where he gets more than 18 mpg. Most of those other guys are veteran, proven high minute D1 players we brought in. I dont think they came for a major role reduction.

I think 18 mpg is significant and really just depends on CAL. If he truly is going to play more 4 around 1, Dontae will get his chance. I can see him getting 2 four or 5 minute stretches a half. Even with all the additions Allen can still be one of KYs best 3 point shooters if not the best one and a deadly stand still shooting threat.

I hope that ~18 mpg is enough for Allen bc on another team he could easily play 25 mpg. The thought of Wheeler or Tyty (mostly Wheeler in this scenario bc hes a proven downhill assist man) kicking to CJ and Allen on the court at the same time has to be scary for defenses. 2 guys you HAVE to stay glued on but a point guard you cant really play 1v1. Sheesh. Cant wait to watch our offense operate.

Look, I never try to bash a kid and I’m not doing it now, BUT he is 5’10, shoots the ball at a horrendous clip, and turns the ball over at a more than alarming rate. I get it, he tried to make a lot happen on a bad team and he is not trash, but 5’10 and 22% from 3 is just not exciting as your starting point guard. I’ll support him if he’s the guy, but I’ll remain hopeful we end up with a better option.
Wonder how he was 2nd team All SEC???? Do they base the selection on low shooting percentages and turnovers?

Nope!!!!! It was because he was one of top assist men in the country. Just because he puts up high assist totals and made second team all sec doesn’t mean that he’s who we need as our lead guard to win a title. Hope he comes and proves me wrong. It’s my opinion, and I’ve stated why many times.

People here hated Briscoe. Players who bring their lunch pail every game need not apply. Gotta be able to stand around the perimeter and hit a three. Those are worth one more point than twos and that is all that matters.
I loved Briscoe except for the baseline out of bounds plays he always made but he played hard and we always knew what we were getting from him.

Exactly right, Cal doesn’t necessarily like small PGs, meaning he definitely sees something he likes. The staff is saying that if he can average nearly 8 assists at UGA, he should be even better here, with more talent around him. I can’t really disagree with that sentiment at this juncture.

Here’s the thing. We needed a backup PG, regardless. Not many guys are gonna want to come and play behind a freshman, which Wheeler most likely will be doing. I would much rather Cal grab this kid now, just in case we aren’t able to get a better option. I definitely don’t want to go into the season with one PG.

EDIT: We’ve been beat so many times by small, quick guards just like Wheeler. We always say, “man, I wish we had a small, quick guard to fix that issue.” I’m paraphrasing of course. Anyway, Wheeler may be that guy.
Exactly. The main point is he is definitely good enough to give quality minutes and that’s what we need.

I know they technically are suited for different positions, but if adding Wheeler makes Mintz think he won't get enough guard min, I'd rather have Mintz back if it's one or the other. Again, I know one is naturally a PG and the other is a SG, but they would ultimately fill each other's min from time to time.
