Really want it to be PSU and feel it would have been there if we had pulled out that 2014 game. But if Ash can get us to the next step and be a consistent 7/8 win team with the potential for more, win some games against PSU and keep the others close...They will come to grips that it is there.

Maryland- I don't know if they are capable of being a rival. Pretty boring fanbase

Maryland will eventually turn into a rivalry because of the players due to the close competitive games and due to the media with all of the similarities of both of the teams. As far as PSU, it may be one sided on the field at least for football...but its not as one sided with the fan bases. We all know how we feel but from what I have seen PSU fans care a lot more than we give them credit for, I know as few that would pitch a fit if they loss to us be it because they think they are better than us or whatever it may be when they play us they pay extra attention. Also I know the coaches on both sides pay attention as well, Franklin talks down at us and thats part of his MO to downplay the rivalry but it they didn't care they wouldn't have come up with the whole Unrivaled crap when we and UMD joined.

The natural rival is usually another instate school. Since this will never happen with us, you have to look beyond your borders and find another school that does not have a real rival either. PSU has Pitt and that will not change. It doesn't mean that we can or will stop hating them, but a rivalry requires both sides to participate and they are not even close to caring about RU. Although Maryland appears to be rival-less, our two histories with each other are not all that deep. This will take time to develop and the most important thing is if we can keep our games like they have been since we both entered the BIG. As already noted by some, we need to extend this to the other sports. The more conflicts the better.

I really don't think enough Maryland fans care to make this a rivalry with them.

I don't think Maryland has much of a choice. We have entered into the league at the same time, plus the geographic location and fight for the same level recruits will make us their default rival. Most other B1G teams have their rivals established and we aren't going to change them. And for us to have ANY semblance of a rivalry with PSU, we need to play them more competitive and win some games on the field. I talk mostly of football here. I am guessing there are absolutely no people on PSU's board contemplating their budding rivalry with us.

That's not true at all. Many of the best rivalries in the country are not between in state schools. OSU v. Michigan, Oklahoma v Texas, Army v Navy, ND v USC, Nebraska v Colorado, Harvard v Yale, Georgia v Florida, Pitt v WVU, Minny v Wiscy, ND v Mich State, ND v Miami, Florida v Georgia, Bama v Tenn.

I think we're on our way with Maryland.
We are comparable programs, recruit areas overlap, both have young up and coming coaches. We both have a void losing traditional rivals with re-alignment.
Geography ( makes for easy road trip).
I also think Penn State will eventually be there . BIG affiliation will help level the playing field . Wins will come with time.
No love between schools already, only to escalate. Yes all the ingredients for a rivalry
in the works.

MD or State Penn?

We are basically rival-less at the moment...I mean come on...too many changes and conference affiliations...to me, MD offers the best chance at a rivalry across most sports. The "nose up in the air" lion people will never accept RU as a true rival...much like Texas fans don't consider A&M one (only OU to them)

While hating on State Penn is delightful, and when they lose, yummy, I posit that the eventual longer term rivalry will be with the turtles...especially if we get our act together in MBB, WBB and baseball!

I take it most will say that PA school...but I respect MD far more and would love for it to become a strong series in all sports!

Was reading an article on top rivalries and the thought came to mind...
As much as we might want to be PSU the correct answer can only by Maryland...unless we are taking about college basketball or wrestling...

rivalries are a two way street which is why Ohio State and Michigan will never be PSUs rival, but it's also why Rutgers will never be PSUs...think about a recent thread that asked if you'd rather be bowl eligible or beat PSU and lose the next two...for many of our fans PSU is the super bowl of the season no matter what happens the rest of the year...to PSU playing Rutgers is no different than playing Maryland or Purdue or Indiana...their most likely rival might be Iowa with the way their matchups have impacted championships over the past decade or so...

The only problem is although the games between Maryland are and have been great, its really hard to work up any hatred for Maryland where as PSU is easy. Just seems like two different worlds.

You need 2 things to make a rival:

1) You need to play a lot. Like the saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt. Most of the established rivalries have been playing each other for like 100 years. That's why it's generally teams in the same conference or teams in the same geographic area (playing before conferences existed).

2) You need high stakes games. The teams involved have to, at least on some occasions, be playing for a national championship, conference championship or something big. Having your season ruined by the other team and then you wanting to ruin their season in future years is what creates the rivalry. How many times has the winner of OSU/UM determined the B1G champion and a trip to the Rose Bowl? That's why they are rivals. Beating MD or being beaten by MD in meaningless games is not going to magically create a rivalry. The games have to mean something first.

So in reality, it could be any of the B1G East teams since we play them every year and they will factor the most into our championship goals. Hell, if in the next 10 years, RU and Indiana are battling for the championship every year, they will be our rival.

Unc has duke
USC has ucla
Bama has aub
Osu has Michigan
Ku *HAD* Mu (Ku has shifted to Ksu and Mu to arky because the SEC said so)
Cal has Stanny
Clemson has SC
Texas has ou
Army has navy

While some of these schools have other pretty meaningful ones, this one rivalry defines them...maybe the bloody triangle is the answer. RU and Md are the new kids everyone is trying to say hi to and state penn would probably prefer their rival to be osu? Maybe they should hook up with Pitt more often...

UNC has Duke for BB only. For FB their rival is NC State. The whole BB rivalry, though, has been tainted, as UNC had admittedly been cheating all through those years that the "rivalry" had been established and developed. Duke has a "WTF?" reaction to UNC, now. Will be interesting to see how the BB rivalry is impacted moving forward. Before Duke's rise to prominence, UNC's BB rivalry had been NCSU.

That's an easy one...Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham...proximity makes that ideal!

the problem with PU is that this hatred is mostly one sided, because we had rarely beaten them.

this is a situation where we are saying, PSU is our rival, and they yawn....

for years and years we went back and forth, with good sportsmanship, with the WVU fans...in the end I wonder how many of their fans really thought we were there rivals since we only won two times, I think it was against them, in decades of play
Exactly. And I wish our fans would get a little situational awareness about all this.

A rivalry with MD could make sense. But we actually have to beat PSU, at least a few times and probably more, before any discussion of a rivalry could be anything but one-sided wishful thinking.

And Wake Forest is just up the road in Winston-Salem. These four ACC schools are known hereabouts as "The Big Four."

Those are cool and classic rivalries...similar to what I'd imagine RU-PU used to be like

I think for a rivalry to be really good it needs to go both ways. PSU will never be our rival because they will always think they are better than us, PSU wants to be OSU and Michigan's rivals but those two think they are better than PSU so that too will never take place. I think Maryland can became a pretty good rivalry. I don't get the impression that they think they are better than us and so far 3 of the 4 games have been pretty good.

By default, Maryland. Barring an "accidental" rival, the way Louisville was, briefly, it has to be Maryland.

Proximity. Check. Entered league at same time. Check. Plus the rivalry could extend to men's basketball, women's basketball, wrestling and lacrosse fairly easily.

Neither fan base might be excited at first, but these things usually happen over time. We've got time.

Besides, it beats UConn or Temple, doesn't it?

If noone wants to be our rival, screw them. Too many schools in our league talk crap about us. It isn't just PSU or Maryland. That's why I say screw them all. It's time we become the bad guys in this league. The team everybody hates. The team all the fans talk about beating.
