MD or State Penn?

We are basically rival-less at the moment...I mean come on...too many changes and conference affiliations...to me, MD offers the best chance at a rivalry across most sports. The "nose up in the air" lion people will never accept RU as a true rival...much like Texas fans don't consider A&M one (only OU to them)

While hating on State Penn is delightful, and when they lose, yummy, I posit that the eventual longer term rivalry will be with the turtles...especially if we get our act together in MBB, WBB and baseball!

I take it most will say that PA school...but I respect MD far more and would love for it to become a strong series in all sports!

Was reading an article on top rivalries and the thought came to mind...

PSU is like Uconn was (absolute hate, putrid fan base, total disgrace of fans and ridiculously delusional)
Maryland is like Syracuse was (think they're better than they are, like they belong due to irrelevant things, just want to beat them in every sport, close game to travel to)
Michigan is like Louisville was (some close games, some blowouts, but a team you just wanted to beat)

I think our games against MD will be must watch games. Not because we "hate" each other but because the games are so entertaining. PSU on the other hand is a different story. We hate them already and Ash has this program going in the right direction. Once we start getting the jersey kids to stay home an we continue to get kids from PA they will also begin to hate us. They can deny it all they want but they will. We've been saying "if" for so long when it comes to the top Nj kids but I think Ash is the guy who will be able to get them to stay this year and Sitkowski is going to help a lot.

I think on the field it's going to be Maryland. Recruiting/Message boards/fans it will be Penn State.

I am already getting the smack talk from my brother-in-law. Every year I want to beat those guys in blue so badly.

we don't have enough rival fans in our board...most are from that PA school...1 or 2 MD posters...that I hope changes...

The A&M board I visit is lousy with Texas fans...they're mean, vile, belittling, arrogant, stupid, obnoxious, did I say stupid? There are plenty of hogs and swamp kittens, hyper arrogant bammers, and vols...it is a delightful cauldron of bitterness!

I wish that for this board! Pissed off turtles and state penners angry that RU whipped them and having to deal with rutgersal when RU is good (can you imagine!?)

I think they're both rivalries, already, due to various (similar AND different) reasons, talked about a zillion times previously, but understand some don't agree.

I think at the end of the day, there are too many similarities in substance and situation for this not to be a rivalry, regardless of what anybody from either side claims. Us Turtle fans have been on both sides of the "not our rival" nonsense. I don't like that kind of stuff. Neither fan base thinks the other is any kind of rival to write home about, perhaps. But it's already developing in my opinion.

This. There is zero juice between the schools or the fans. 99% couldn't care less what happens with them.
Meanwhile we can't go a single week without several Penn State threads.
It will never be Maryland.

But are state penn fans as jazzed as about RU? Probably not

A rivalry has to be a two way street. We can call anyone we want rivals but a true rivalry has to have both sides equally trash talking each other and having the games mean as much to both fandoms. At this point, we really don't have a true rival yet, other than what we perceive here on these boards.

Can't force it to be so. Can't wish it to be so. Any rivalry for RU will emerge on its own, if it is to be. A decade of closely contested games in both FB and BB will help foster a natural rivalry, be it with PSU or MD. Let's check back in in 2028.

I think in Bball it will always be Seton Hall. Don't see a Big Ten school getting into the mix.

One of the best games we had was against Penn State.. and I was at the Shu game in the Barn with paint chips falling.
And after that one great game for the A10 title, nothing, crickets.
SHU is a worthy rival in Bball

I disagree with those that say it cannot be Maryland....I think it will be,and it has already started...

Maybe not with the fans so much at first, but on the field, with the players..... three of the last four games were gut checking, right to the end, games....

our coach was on fire on the sidelines, more emotional than all the
other games this year, put together.....

we may not LIKE them to be the rival, but as others say, these things develop on their own....you have got to know that the Maryland players will remember this years game.

I know most want it to Penn state.....but even if we beat them once, let's say next year at home, to them, it would be a one year glitch that they believe they can fix with the next game.... we would have to start beating them almost half the time to get their attention.....and we are a good distance away from that.

Agreed.

I mean we weren't rivals with UCONN until a few years after they joined the Big East. At first we didn't give a crap about them but it turned into a rivalry. Maryland has some of that same FU Northeast attitude that UConn has. I can see it happening. It's all still developing.

So far Maryland fans seem not to be interested and most Rutgers fans are holding out for another school rather than having the Turtles as a rival.
If Penn St ever becomes one, it will take more than a couple of years and Rutgers will have to prove to be the Nittany Lions equal on the field.
Just disliking that school won't make a rivalry
Like in the Big East with UConn and Syracuse, talk about rivalries against both schools came up often, but none of the fans of Rutgers, Syracuse and/or UConn
wanted to call the other a rival.
The same is happening now with Maryland,PSU & RU, the fanbase of each school can't call the others close to a rival.

Rutgers fans want the Nits, but until the Scarlet Knights start beating the Nits on the field on a regular bases and keep the kids at home, the Nit fans will be turning up their noses when it comes to rivalry with RU talk .
I think Maryland fans would rather see a rivalry develop between their school and Penn St and are disinterested in one developing with Rutgers .
With both school's fans looking at Penn St , neither fanbase want to think about a Scarlet Knight - Terrapin rivalery

You can have more than one rival.

Michigan people say they have three: OSU, MSU, and Minnesota. They used to have four back when they played ND.

there were a few Maryland fans that were in front of me....it seemed like they were a bit cocky here and there during the game, rather than just sit there passively...... at the end, one guy just sat there, shaking his head in disbelief.... I got the impression that he thought that Maryland had left RU in the dust after last year, since they beat us rather easily, and their recruiting was a lot better, on paper.

looking back, we also did not want Uconn to be our rival, but we had a lot of very tough games with them...they were a team we expected to leave way behind, but almost every game we won against them was a tough one.

Since it seems so many Yankees go to Maryland, I look forward to the eventually Guidos vs. Guidos threads. There's so much in common with the two schools, outside of sports achievement.

Indiana fans seem to have an unnatural hatred for Rutgers (fear of being kept down in the pecking order?). I want Rutgers to demoralize the Hoosiers every year.

Right now, I see Indiana and Maryland as RU's chief rivals as the bottom half of the B1G East.

Since joining The B1G, it's Maryland because of the close games and comebacks by both schools. In terms of hatred/bitterness it will always be PU because of their total domination.

the problem with PU is that this hatred is mostly one sided, because we had rarely beaten them.

this is a situation where we are saying, PSU is our rival, and they yawn....

for years and years we went back and forth, with good sportsmanship, with the WVU fans...in the end I wonder how many of their fans really thought we were there rivals since we only won two times, I think it was against them, in decades of play

Unc has duke
USC has ucla
Bama has aub
Osu has Michigan
Ku *HAD* Mu (Ku has shifted to Ksu and Mu to arky because the SEC said so)
Cal has Stanny
Clemson has SC
Texas has ou
Army has navy

While some of these schools have other pretty meaningful ones, this one rivalry defines them...maybe the bloody triangle is the answer. RU and Md are the new kids everyone is trying to say hi to and state penn would probably prefer their rival to be osu? Maybe they should hook up with Pitt more often...
