Gotta be the single most worstest song ever, and I'm a bluegrass music fan. I like the people of Tennessee too. They strike me as just as friendly and probably less clannish than we Kentuckians are. Don't have an issue with the lyrics. Just the tune. Nora Jones couldn't save that piece of ear poison if she sang it naked at the Opry.

Ok, I'm torn about that last sentence. But I believe the song could be very effective in making captured terrorists spill the beans.
Makes me wanna sell the Buick.

Any bluegrass fans out there actually like it?

I disagree. It is the most recognized song associated with college football. I hate UT but when the band comes down the hill playing Rocky Top, nothing like it in college football.

That's cool. Won't argue that. I may be one of few that hate on the song. And it could be the combination of all that orange eye poison with the song that gits my goat.

Naw, it's the song. Not the musicians. It's the first four repetitive notes and crazy notes afterwards. It sounds off-key to me. All of it. Karaoke nightmare. I'll stop.

There ya go. The songwriters had some other hits, I see. Like 'em all better than Rocky Top.

I don't hate the song outside of UT sporting events. I think it captures mid 20th century Appalachian culture in an authentic way. I hate the east coast infantilization of Appalachia that was very popular 10-20 years ago. Rocky Top captures the legally dubious nature of mountain culture while demonstrating the impact of place on person.

Didn't Wayne Newton sing that song? If he didn't, he should...;)

My Grandma's favorite song ever. We play it for her at all of the family weddings. 89 years old and she can still dance to it.

Big UK fan too.

Written by Kentuckians, right?
Wiki says the husband-wife writers were from Georgia and Wisconson.

Boudleaux Bryant was born in Shellman, Georgia in 1920 and attended local schools as a child. He trained as a classical violinist. Although he performed with the AtlantaPhilharmonic Orchestra during its 1937-38 season, he had more interest in country "fiddling."

He joined Hank Penny and his Radio Cowboys, an Atlanta-based western music band. In 1945 Bryant met Matilda Genevieve Scaduto, whom he called Felice, while performing at a hotel in her hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was born in the city in 1925 to an ethnic Italian family. She used to write lyrics to traditional Italian tunes. During World War II, she sang and directed shows at the local USO.[2]

It's a matter of taste. Personally, it reminds me of Football, which is good. IMO, the absolute worst song associated with sports in general is the singing of Sweet Caroline at some schools, Iowa St, in particular following a win. Such a stupid song to sing as an association with sports.....pathetic.

I'm gonna change my tune about the song. Gotta hear it every year anyway. I kinda regret venting negativity via a new thread but things are slow. Banjo music ain't nothin' to hate on. I'll do better.

Why do they play Sweet Caroline? The Neil Diamond song? Huh. Maybe a feel good song for crowd manipulation.

I went to the UK/UT football game in 2014 down in Knoxville. The only thing more annoying than playing rocky top every 5 minutes in Neyland Stadium is when the Vols get a team to 3rd down they play that godawful Lil John song "turn down for what" only they change the lyrics to "third down for what." They do it every damn time and every one of those orange idiots eat it up. Couldn't wait to get the hell outta there. It didn't help that they blasted us like usual 50-16.

It's a terrible song, easily the most annoying in sports. Try watching a UT football game with Tennessee fans. Every touchdown GIVE HIM SIX followed by ROCKY FLOP and that yell. Omg it's pitiful. And they do it over and over and over and over.

I've got a lot of Tennessee fans in my family and area. You don't want to know just how bad that song really is. I literally keep a few Tylenol on hand during game days when my tn family gets together. And I take them.

The make that sound the most obnoxious noise in the universe. And they suck most of the time so you're left wondering why?

Sorry...performed by Kentuckians. My bad.

I think if I were from Tennessee I would like it. But I'm not, so I don't.

Can't believe you're the only one to call me out on that. She's cute and sings like a bird.
