Breaking news during the pro bowl reported it was he and his 4 children. Just terrible all the way around.

I can’t even express how tragic this is. Was never a Lakers fan but watched him in absolute awe. Maybe the greatest offensive player and clutch scorer of all time.

RIP Kobe. The world mourns your passing. May you have eternal peace.

Look in the sky. What natural thing up there aerodynamically looks like a plane?? Now find something that looks like a helicopter...that’s your answer.

Coming from someone who flew them. If you lose the power source then you’re a rock falling. Only hope is to conduct a successful autorotation which is essentially converting potential to kinetic energy at the last second to cushion the impact; small skid Helos you can slide it on gently if you nail it.

But civilian pilots don’t get reps at practicing autos

Exactly and I love flying high end RC planes and the helicopters as well as they are made are ten times harder to fly than a plane. I can only imagine flying a real one.

Some are reporting that Rick Fox was with him.

The thing with his kids better not be true.

Until about 15 minutes ago, KTLA had a surreal clip up where the anchors were speculating something to the effect that it didn't look that bad, etc.

It's down now.

Was creepy to watch.

All the other sites are saying it wasn't his kids or wife so I really hope that was wrong. It is one thing for a 40 year old man like myself to die it is another thing entirely for kids to die . Horrible either way but a child's life is the most precious thing there is on this earth . They literally are the future .

I can’t imagine Kobe flying the helicopter with 4 daughters including a newborn on board. Aren’t they reporting 5 people?

Wrong this time...sad to say...
Its still not being reported. Have you seen it elsewhere? Seems odd this report comes out the night after LeBron passes him on the scoring list.[/QUOTE]

Huh? Yes it is being reported. I don't check drudge much anymore but he is known to report when confirmed.

Unbelievable. This is the biggest sports tragedy of my lifetime.

It reminds me of when Davey Allison died. I was still into NASCAR (as a kid I called them ray cars and loved to watch the speed). Allison was my favorite as my Dad liked him too. When that news broke I was heartbroken. My favorite driver had died. I stopped watching NASCAR. And to be honest, hadn’t really watched it much until right before Dale Earnhardt died. I picked it back up, and about a month after I did, I watched Dale Earnhardt slam into a wall and die. It broke my heart again. I haven’t watched NASCAR since.

Now that you know that, this is even worse.

Too soon to know for certain who all was on board but Kobe was a licensed pilot so he very well may have been flying himself.

So, evidently - evidently!! - ABC/ESPN got it wrong on the daughters. Was just explaining to my kids, not everything about the old days was bad. When i was a kid, no one would have heard anything about this likely until the evening news, by which time they would have known all the facts. No guessing or speculation. But now, competition and ratings mean you have to get it out there now ("it's been on Fox for 17 minutes people!!!!") mean there's a rush to get it on the air.

Reason #146 news media in this country is dying, and can no longer be taken seriously.

I’ve never been this affected by the death of a famous person. I always thought Kobe epitomized the perfect competitor. He was all business on the basketball court and not even MJ matched his intensity. He played every single game as if there were no one in the stands and no one watching at home. He was there to win every game he played in and nothing else. Rest In Peace, Mamba. I’ll tell my kids all about you one day.

Always had a special uneasiness about helicopters because of how many famous musicians and celebs have died in crashes.

I'm not sure how the safety compares to airplanes but you'll never catch me in a helicopter.

So much harder to fly.

I’ve never been a big NBA fan and was generally indifferent to Kobe’s career, but man this is terrible news, especially the part of his family being with him...

Pretty close to me.. Not that bad.. I never watched another NASCAR race again after DE.. Some of us get too caught up into people we never met,, but I lost my dad in 2010 and losing Dale was equally as bad for me.. This does rank up there as I followed Kobe from his Jr year of high school all the way through his career.. This is a tough one to swallow..

One of my favorite players. I know he had off court issues but he was a fierce competitor. God rest his soul and may his family find peace.
